I wonder if Rooney has yet realised that he has been handed the poisoned chalice of captaincy of a national team of no-hopers ?

Manchester United will be somewhat relieved to find that Marcos Rojo has now been granted the required work permit, so their defence will be somewhat strengthened by the Argentinian defender for the coming match against QPR.

I hope they are relieved, it would be tragic if they had to buy their way in to Europe like Chelsea or Man City.

The current clear out of players of somewhat lesser ability and those who have decided to end their final playing days elsewhere, with only three league matches played, shows that a new broom is being vigorously being used at Old Trafford

Or Liverpool ;)

Although Liverpool have raised most of what they've spent through player sales rather than a super rich owner.

Liverpool typically buy in young players cheap and develop them. Selling on for a tidy profit. (ignoring a certain Mr Carroll that is)

Torres bought for £20m, sold for £50m
Suarez bought for £22.8m sold for £75m.

Man City and to an extent Chelsea are not profiting from player development and selling on for profit.

Just look at Man City letting Negredo go out on loan only a year after spending a small fortune on him. Just chucking their expenditure away.

Also with Liverpool for example having not been in the Champions League for many years, this years qualification in prize money alone is worth £40m just for the group games, even if don't get out of the group. Champions League home matches will make approx. £1.5m per game in profit through matchday revenue that the club wouldn't get not being in the Champions League.

It all makes it worthwhile spending if you get results!

Man Utd have pretty much done the same - although a higher proportion of this is 'other commercial revenue' (match tickets / merchandise / TV rights / sponsors etc.) as opposed to a rich owner coming in overnight.

It pains me to say it, be to their credit, Man City seem to have 'normalised' over the last year and are now not spending millions of money which comes from only one source - the new rich owner who has just bought them. Over time they will need to get their youth set-up sorted though - I'm struggling to think of anyone in their current side who has come through the city academy.

*Awaits crucifixion for the above post* ;)

I didn't even realise they had an academy due to a lack of such players. I'm sure someone will tell us otherwise

After this post I googled the Man City Academy. We were not only a little wrong but very wrong. This is my findings.

Manchester City's Academy is responsible for youth development at the club, with the goal of developing young players for the future. The academy is one of the most revered in the country and since its new incarnation in 1998 it has produced more professional players than any other Premier League club. To date, the club has produced 15 graduates who have received full international call-ups from their various countries; 14 that have represented their respective countries at the 'Under-21' or 'Under-20' level; 35 who have progressed on to become City first team players at some point; and more than 60 that are currently playing professional league football. Carrington is responsible for such graduates as Micah Richards, Michael Johnson, QPR's Nedum Onuoha and Shaun Wright-Phillips, Fulham's Dickson Etuhu and Stoke City's Glenn Whelan and Stephen Ireland.

It's done well in producing premier league players - although none of these are still at City.

I wouldn't really call Man Cities academy a success since no one from it is a first team regular. I have a bit more time for United who at least gained most of their revenue from success over the years, however, for the amount of money they have spent or will be spending over the season on Di Maria and Falcao I would be expecting about 30 goals a season off each of them. If they achieve this I am not sure where it leaves Rooney, Mata, Van Persie etc. Now if Liverpool spending £16m on an Italy international shows desperation from Liverpool as some Manchester United fans have said I don't know what their signings have shown. At least we were trying to replace one of the best attacking players in the world. Manchester United need a new defence and midfield and have spent a fortune on attacking players. On the plus side if they are hoping to win the league by leaking goals all over the place but scoring more on a regular basis, a bit like we did last season, it could be a very exciting season.

Man City have had a very productive academy - Daniel Sturridge, Micah Richards, Saun Wright-Phillips, Joey Barton and soon Emyr Huws- it's just the standard required to get in to the Senior side is significantly higher than it was. Those that do not make it will invariably drop down to the next level.
Chelsea too have benefited from a reasonable academy and similar too City the standared of the First Team is very high. Lukaku, De Bruyne would all get a few games in the first squad but not enough that they require at this stage in their career.
Everton and soon Liverpool's academy look they'll be like the most productive in the next few years.
Man City may have reigned in their spending but is this due too FFP or have they decided on cutting back independently?
Chelsea are possibly £100,000 down in transfer dealings this Summer and this does not take into account the sale of Mata in January.
United's academy hasn't been very productive recently but IF they give Van Gaal time who knows what he can unearth at Bayern he wasn't afraid to pick unknown youngsters and play them in a different position. Wasn't he one of the Architects of Barcelona's academy?
FFP requires Club's to spend within their means and is supposed to not allow ''artificial'' levels of Sponsor/investments. So United's commercial income must cover the expense on transfers this Summer - they signed a £70m per season kit -. And not being in Europe means they do not need to comply with FFP this season anyway.

.

And Southampton. Although they've had an excellent last 10 years; Walcott, Bale, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chambers, Shaw, Lallana...

I think the only product of United's academy in recent years who is in the first 18 is Adnan Januzaj - for information, I'm saying 'academy' as having played games at youth level for the club and not having played a senior game for another club.

Of course, our best one in recent years is arguably one of Europe's best midfielders - Paul Pogba.

I think we are playing fast and loose with the term Academy Player here. Did Sturridge start his career in the Academy at Man City?

Pogba was that good he no longer plays for Manchester United. Not saying much by the by. Ha ha. :)

Who's brother was at Crewe.
The ''travel time'' rule can also mean that Club's cannot sign players from 200 miles down the road but can sign a French or Belgian Kid.
It was designed to protect Big Club's poaching/stockpiling players from the smaller ones but in turn it's allowed them to bring in and develop France and Belgium's talent. Who from an outsider don't really need help developing players.

Is this the reason why there is "media speculation" that now SAF who is not concerned with the day to day team management and with whom Pogba had a disagreement, that Manchester United are now "said" to be willing to spend a frightening amount of millions of pounds sterling to bring back to the club ?

I wouldn't have a clue. Ferguson wasn't the selfless genius many made out. He was in it for number one and fair enough. He left the team in bits as was proved last season. As I have said before I am sure they will be back soon. No matter how much they spend it will be hard for them to ever be as good as they were under Ferguson.

Oldham have made it three wins in row and three clean sheet in row too after they beat Fleetwood 1-0, I felt we dessert to win the game as Fleetwood didn't really created much of chances and goal came from penalty in which Forte score from, that 5 goals in six matches for him now but sadly he did got injured so hopefully he didn't badly hurt and will play next Saturday.

Hyde are unbeaten in two matches after they draw 1-1 to Gloucester City, ok Hyde still haven't win game this season but aleast is small improve on them.

First competitive match for Gibraltar?

Shame they lost 7-0

Albania beat Portugal 1-0, and Scotland lost (no surprise there)

Any of you who aren't fans of Chiles, etc: they all just got soaked by a pitch sprinkler. It's probably already on youtube.

I don't mind Chile at all, they have been one of the more innovative tactical sides for a number of years now.
I like SKY SPORTS 5's Multi-View option of being able to choose 5 matches to watch.

England beat the Swiss 2-0 in Basel.

And based on UEFA's qualification system that's England qualified.

I've also had to eat my words to an Arsenal friend. I said Welbeck cant score. He argued that he could when played in his correct position. Played in correct position he scores twice!

Some of us have been saying that for a little while ;)
