The WHL doesn't have special instructions, unlike the Cumbrian Coast line. Until such time the instructions are rescinded, then trains abide by that rule. I've worked under X headcodes on the Coast purely because the crew doors had droplights, but never had to on the WHL.

And I'd suggest it's better if heritage trains didn't rock the boat - they're on difficult ground as it is.

It's a ridiculous rule and a pain the a*se for railtour operators. Cable ties on the ventilation windows, plus a Steward in every pair of vestibules. There's many similar sections of restricted clearance on the West Highland line, and I'm yet to hear of decapitations there, despite nothing to stop numpties doing it if they so wish

Count yourself lucky tours are allowed round there at all. There were a few tours allowed round there in around 1993/1994 (with window bars on the droplights and pins on the quarterlights), then no tours at all for around 10-15 years. It's only a small price to pay for being able to do that route.

Three coachs will be exclusive for Sellafield employees, if it is a four coach train as suggested that would be one coach open to the public.

Yes its available for anyone to get on. Local TV and papers said.............so it must be true. It ran with a 37/4 this morning
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I agree with the windows being closed on this route and for that matter the doors being locked..........................heading way out west to the coast is like entering another world. You never know what can happen

Didn't make it over today...although I intend to get some shots in from the lineside in coming weeks! <D Merely watching its progress whilst monitoring another working, for the record 2T20 terminated r/t, incredibly, was 11 late at one point on route!

Did appear to have a vast amount of performance allowance in it between Parton and St Bees, will run to a changed schedule tomorrow where it departs 0615 from Carlisle.

Line speeds are also very low around parts - someone will be able to confirm but I'm sure there is a section where it is 10 mph only. Also, the single section before Parton doesn't help.

Just got the track diagrams out...20mph over Harrington Viaduct...15 between Parton North and South Jn...15 through Whitehaven Tunnel...25mph over Kirkby Vidauct...roughly 1/4 mile of 10mph over Seascale LC, so some pretty slack track there!!

0608 dept still in the system for tomorrow off CAR!!
Meanwhile 2T21 is doing reasonably, 4E into Carlisle :)

Some very slow sections then! We also got held for a late running northbound service on Saturday, which delayed us for a few more minutes before the single section.

Slow speeds have been a thing round the coast for many years now. So close to the sea and unstable headlands. Most restrictions are in place due to risk of landslips

I will try and get across at some point during the trial and will certainly report back if I do :) I'm told that today's run was good expect for the window bars, 423 sounding fine!

This is a tricky one to bash for me.

I'd be looking at the 06:30 Dublin-Manchester, a unit to Barrow, another unit to Chernobyl. I'd do the glow-ex to Carlisle and overnight, then do it back all the way to Barrow the following morning, then head onto Manchester. Requires two days off work, not sure if worth it.

However, I am doing that Spitfire tour to Fort William (assuming it runs), so there is the convenient option of bailing at Carlisle on the Sunday and doing the Glow-ex on Monday Morning.

Surely his source is Network Rail's WTT data - the same source as your site uses ;)

Not if they originated from VSTP, unless he somehow has access to the real-time VSTP data.

If you look at the bottom of Open Train Times, you'll see I've credited the data sources because I've been working to get rail data opened up for over a year now - see http://blog.poggs.com/2011/05/open-rail-data/ - I'm not precious about my work, but it is nice to be at least *mentioned*.

Lots of employees release TRUST data to gen groups.

Aside from that, I think your work is admirable. As I said in my PM your site is fantastically useful.

If I posted something from TRUST that I'd looked up myself, no credit needed... but if I'd used somebody else as a middle-man, credit's there is due, don't you think?

I know Jacob has been flirting with the idea of asking NR for the data himself, and he might well be hard at work writing his own CIF parser and working out how STP and CAN overlays work, so I might be entirely wrong here... but I know what's a VSTP working and what is and isn't in the CIF data...

Still, only a few months until I launch this and get on with a real-time map of train positions - then we can all bash and grice from a better informed standpoint :)

Fair enough, can't argue with that! I was just trying to make the point that there is more than one source for this kind of data - officially and unofficially.

1L off Wigton this morning, still watching from above ;)
Departure time amended to 0615 on the system, but not until shortly before departure!

By a very happy chance I have a meeting in Carlisle a week on Monday which will finish in plenty of time for the 15:12 unit to Sellafield. Getting on the Glo-Ex would be difficult otherwise as it somewhat annoyingly gets into Carlisle just in time to miss the last southbound S&C working of the day. Also handy getting the fuel to and from Carlisle covered by work :)

Has anyone managed to get on this yet? I'm quite tempted to do it at least once, but would be tricky. I'd have to get up early and drive to Carlisle, get the 06.15 and find something to do in Barrow. After this I'd have to get a unit up to Sellafield, and wait for 57 minutes at Sellafield itself, or go further and get on a unit southbound to change at Sellafield and go back to Carlisle (or, if all else fails, go to St. Bees?).

How easy would it be to stay at Sellafield for that hour between trains - especially given the nature of the site?
