The opening stand had put on 105 runs, before Young was caught by Brook off the bowling of Atkinson.
The last 13 overs on the first day saw New Zealand advance from 231-7 to 315-9.New Zealand made a respectable 315-9 on the first day. England never bowled an over of spin, just used their three seamers backed up by Stokes!
When a team is set more than 600 in the final innings and reach a score of 122-2 with two of their best players at the crease, you would not expect them to lose so many wickets for such a poor score return. All over. 234-9 with Stokes not able to bat. A loss by 424 runs.
Equally, nice for Tim Southee to retire from test cricket on a high.
Any suggestion that the game could be saved from 640 behind is just fanciful, and a quick glance at the weather forecast for Hamilton would reveal that there was no prospect of help from that quarter. It is also very easy to overlook the mental effect of being in that position and how that will affect the batters.I just don’t understand the mentality of the England team today. It needed hard work and application and a few prayers for rain; what we got was a succession of batsmen out playing daft shots. Scoring at almost 5 an over when there’s a game to be saved is just insane

And he completely rattled the Indian side.I think a new star has appeared. 19 year Sam Konstas made his Test debut this morning, opening for Oz against India. He scored 60 off 65 balls and made Bazball look boring. He was first out with the score 1-80 after 19.2 overs.
I really loved watching that knock. Not afraid to shy away from that beautiful reverse ramp having missed out the first 2 timesI think a new star has appeared. 19 year Sam Konstas made his Test debut this morning, opening for Oz against India. His bowling return was 28.4 - 9 - 99 - 4, an economy rate of 3.45 runs per over.Bumrah took the last Australian wicket to end with 4 for 99. From my (sleepy) memory of comments made by the ABC commentators, that just maintained his record of never having conceded a hundred runs in an innings.
Is part of the Willow Talk podcast which is often interesting to listen toJust crawled out of my bed and yes DelW the ABC commentators did say he'd never conceeded over 100 runs in an innings. Talking of commentators I really enjoyed listening to Alysha Healy the Oz ladies captain and wicky. She's married to Mitch Starc and niece of Ian Healy one time Baggy Green keeper very good speaker, hopefully more tonight.
