Well...another win for England, glad to see David Willey was included in the squad.

I've just read that Paul Horton has signed a three year deal with Leicestershire.

Former England Captain Brian Close has died aged 84:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/34244820

BBC said:
Former England, Yorkshire and Somerset captain Brian Close has died, aged 84.

The Yorkshireman is the youngest player to have won a Test cap for England, making his debut as an 18-year-old against New Zealand in 1949.

Close, who was known for his brave batting, captained his country seven times in 22 Tests, and led Yorkshire to four County Championship titles.

Just watching that video of him batting, aged 45(!), for England v West Indies against Holding, Roberts & Daniel and taking everything they could chuck at him on the body and not showing them any pain is incredible.

I remember hearing 1 story about Brian that typified him.

He was fielding at Short Leg (I cannot remember the match or who the opponents were), and was hit on the right hand side of his forehead after the batsman hit a fierce pull shot. The ball bounced up into the air and carried to the wicket keeper, who caught it. After that, Brian kept on field at Short Leg every over, sometimes wiping the blood away if it was getting too much.

He was asked at the next interval by a journalist about what happened and if he thought it was wise to field there with no form of head protection. He was then asked what do you think would have happened if the ball had hit you in the middle of your forehead. The answer came in true Yorkshire fashion .....

"The ball would have gone to the bowler instead, and he would have been out caught and bowled" ....

To use an expression that was common thirty years ago, he was a hard nut: the youngest player to receive an England test cap too, though he was never a top class player. Like Brearley, he was an inspirational captain, though their methods couldn't have been more different, and the two of them were very important in the bringing-on of a young Botham, Close for Somerset and Brearley for England. Led Yorkshire to 4 County Championships too. When Edrich and Close were batting together for England, you had two of the hardest men in English cricket, both unflinching.

County Championship....Division 2

Surrey 480 all out (138 overs)
No less than five of their batsmen made 50's

Lancashire 141-5
S. Curran 3-40

With Surrey only needing to draw to stay above Lancashire, batting first and posting such a very large batting total goes a long way to achieving that ambition.

Where are those 500+ stands when you really need them....or do they save them for when Glamorgan pretend that Colwyn Bay is in South Wales...

Or that Old Trafford is in Lancashire:)

Seriously, though, is Ashwell Prince going to delay his retirement for another year? Lancs could do with another season from him.

Jimmy Anderson took his 700th first class wicket today, and bowled 30 overs. Now even Brian Close might have admired that:lol:

Unfortunately, from what "the grapevine" tells me, he feels that at the age of 38, he has achieved all that he wanted and that being part of the pair who made that wonderful 500+ stand this season, this was the highlight of his season.

When Lancashire first began their status in the top echelon of English cricket, there was no such "modern administrative" county areas as are found today. The River Mersey was the natural boundary the separated Lancashire and Cheshire.

Personally, I regret having to claim these days that I am from Cheshire East...not from Cheshire. Some people will have much to answer for.

I can absolutely appreciate Prince's thinking and he can truly say he's going out at the top.

I may not be a Conservative, but I can be very conservative and I can understand your reluctance to embrace modern administrative areas - here today, gone tomorrow in many cases and good riddance.

Another sad episode in the career of Monty Panesar

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/34260389

Personally I was never overly enthusiastic when he joined Sussex but the talent was certainly there when he was in the right frame of mind, if nothing else his batting and fielding always gave everyone a good laugh

I doubt there will be many counties willing to give him another shot

It was often said that Monty Panesar's batting and fielding had more in common with a "Monty Python" sketch.

Absolutely right, his 'efforts' in the field did raise laughs but then you would begin to think "hang on a minute, there are 10 players giving it their all and he can't be bothered", it became rather less amusing then

I was quite surprised that neither David Willey or Ryan Topley have been included in the Test Squad for the Pakistan series, maybe they'll get a trip to South Africa?

The Lancashire first innings was in a very precarious situation at 207-9 against Surrey and it took a rare appearance in a Lancashire team these days for a certain J. Anderson to come in at number 11 and bring a little more dignity to the scoreline with a knock of 42 (1 x 6 / 7 x 4) before being dismissed with the score of 272 all out.

Surrey then made a certain amount of hay in their second innings before declaring and after surviving a few late overs, Lancashire enter the last day 469 runs behind Surrey, with all 10 wickets standing.

Worcestershire have been relegated back to Division Two.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/34274899

County Championship: Worcestershire relegated by defeat

County Championship Division One, Emirates ICG
Worcestershire 350-7 dec & 217-9 dec: D'Oliveira 49; Pringle 3-45, Onions 3-63
Durham 277 & 291-7: Borthwick 99, Richardson 65*; Gabriel 2-56
Durham beat Worcestershire by three wickets
Worcestershire 7 pts, Durham 20 pts
Match Scorecard (valid link)
Worcestershire suffered relegation back to Division Two as Durham ended their County Championship campaign with a three-wicket win at Chester-le-Street.
Bottom-of-the-table Worcestershire needed a win to maintain their hopes of survival in the final round of games.
And after a hectic morning they declared on 217-9, a lead of 290.
Scott Borthwick put on 104 with Paul Collingwood (43) and although he departed for 99, Michael Richardson's unbeaten 65 steered Durham to 291-7.

On what could have been a fraught last day for Lancashire, in their top of the table clash with Surrey, their young 18 year old opening batsman Haseeb Hameed played quite a mature innings to hold up one end for 326 minutes, making his best ever County Championship score of 91 in the process and helped Lancashire to obtain a draw.

The Royal London one day cup final (think Gillette or Nat West for older forum users) proved to be a bit of a classic, Glos winning by six runs with three balls to spare. 'Gareth Jones in his final first class innings before retirement' as some acned pleb on the BBC described him (actually Geraint Jones, and it's not actually a first class match, but we expect such misreporting now the reporters no longer have to wear dinner jackets) made a 'crucial' 50 and Surrey's hired hand Sangakarra seemed to be cruising towards the 220 target before the Glos spinners strangled the rest of the batting. A fine result for a side almost devoid of players with international experience. Oh, and Jade Dernbach ended the Glos innings with a hattrick, even though the report I read suggested the hattrick ball neither hit the batsman's leg (he was given out LBW) nor would have hit a second set of stumps!

Yeah I was watching it on TV and it hit his leg but was wide of the stumps by maybe as much as a foot! Terrible decision. That being said Glos got a LBW that wasn't as well (also missing the stumps by a considerable margin) so I supposed it balanced out in the end.

I see that veteran spin bowler, Gary Keedy, has called time on his career, he was a brilliant asset to Lancashire for many years, before his stints with Surrey and Nottinghamshire. I wonder how good he'd have been playing for England?

Once again, Pat Cummins of Australia is injured and out of yet another tour. If I was him, I'd be considering retirement.

Already relegated Worcester managed a win by an innings in 3 days against Middlessex thanks to two young batsmen (Fell [177] & Kohler-Cadmore [130 no]).

Despite the relegation, the future bodes well for Worcester as they have been competitive in most games this season and, hopefully, they'll be back up next year and teh young players will have that bit more experience so they can turn a couple of the defeats into wins.

It would seem that, somehow, Hampshire are going to pull of the great escape! Comfortably finished of Notts this morning (winning by eight wickets) and Sussex only have two wickets remaining and still need 129 to beat Yorkshire. I can only imagine the tension for both sets of supporters...

The domestic season got underway a couple days ago down here with the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup.
It features the introduction of a Cricket Australia team the CAXI. Made up of players who just missed the cut for the state sides.
Hasn't exactly gone off to any flying start.
Victoria bowled them out for 79 in the 28th over and was chased down in 11.1 overs.
NSW made 3/338 off the 50 and the CAXI was bowled out for 59 in 24.4 overs.

It's got a bit of a boost with National team players being included due to the postponement of the Bangladesh tour.
