As an Aussie...I'm pretty disappointed with the Ashes, but ODIs were redeeming at least!

Shame about the Bangladesh tour being called off but player and spectator safety has to take priority and even with the assurances of the Bangladeshi's if the Australian Government (and I believe the UK Foreign Office also) advice is not to travel then what can you do?

Though I have heard a vicious rumour that the tour was called off because the Aussies were worried about playing in sub-continental conditions ;)

I think after what happened in Pakistan there's just no chance taken.

Meanwhile Victoria are imploding. Some incredibly stupid batting going on out there. They only needed 210 of the 50!
7/79 halfway through the innings.

They are now in a somewhat better position, moving on to 110-7 after 28 overs. As long as Wade, 42 from 37 balls, remains at the crease, there is still a chance that they might win.

Very much doable now. 36 off 68. Only 2 wickets in hand but if they bat well thier in with a shot.
8/174
Now 1 wicket. Pattinson out for 44.
Vics fell 30 runs short.

Are they playing this on a motorway? There appears to be nothing in it for the Bowlers whatsoever.

If they were playing on a motorway then at least we could derive some entertainment from the players having to try and dodge the vehicles on it

Cook set the record today for the longest Test Match innings played by an England player, hitting 263 from 528 balls faced in a time period of 836 minutes.

I suppose that Abu Dhabi is more prone to providing a wicket of the type seen here.

The cynic in me says it's a cunning plan by the sub-continent's boards and TV sations to kill off Test Cricket.

Until that happens, let's hope the days Pakistan have been in the field may make them ask the next groundsman to leave a bit of grass on it if he doesn't mind.

I'm not entirely sure how this has happened but suddenly there's a rather exciting game on here. Pakistan have been dismissed for 173 and have set England 99 to win with 19 overs to go but with the light we'll probably only have around 45 minutes of play left.

Five wickets for Rashid (his first) whose blown away the tail.

The old warhorse, Jimmy Anderson, once again showed that he has the ability to break through the top order and finished with 10-3-30-2 in the Pakistan second innings.

Comparision of the match bowling return of Rashid:-
1st innings.....34 - 0 - 163 - 0
2nd innings....18.5 - 3 - 64 - 5

His debut Test has really been a case of pain and joy. After that first innings you wouldn't have been surprised if he never willingly bowled again but after the second he's surely cemented his place in the side for the rest of this tour!

Defeated by the light with only 25 more runs required.

I'm sure I've said it before on this thread but I'm going to say it again. If the ground has floodlights then no-one should be going off for bad light at any stage of the game. End of.

Still plenty of positives for England to take from this game and whilst the four and 3/4 days were like watching paint dry at least the last couple of hours were very entertaining.

With Pakistani cricket institutionally corrupt it may well be that the bad light decision was influenced via an envelope.

Oh, you cynic, you!!

It will be interesting to see how the day/night match goes in Australia. Clearly, even with the lights on, a red ball must be more difficult to see.
It was always going to be a tough chase for England, especially as it is a very large ground.

I don't see how as they've gone off at a similar time previously in this match (when it looked like a nailed on certainty for a draw) and the floodlights were definitely taking effect when they went off so whilst I strenuously disagree that they should have gone off (why bother with floodlights if you're going to go off for bad light?!) I think suggestions of bribery are a bit much.

Besides, compared to FIFA, the PCB are a paradigm of virtue!

The whole point of umpires being in sole charge of the light is when they go off first, they take readings and use that reading for all subsequent matters so it's consistent.

I agree during daylight there should be no such thing as bad light - hey how much more padded and helmeted up do the batsmen and fielders have to be? The days of Close fielding with his head have long gone.

But on sun down, especially sub-continent, it's a different matter and the dark ball can get lost in the sky and background even with lights on. White ball is different. So the England team would have known how many minutes left until sunset to get the runs.

BUT that allows time-wasting, and in a run-chase the umpires should be able to call a warning (first offence) then 5 extras (second offence) at any point they think the fielding side is time wasting; and a third time the game should be defaulted. Could also work in reverse, where a batting team is digging in to save the game and they are constantly asking for new gloves, drinks etc - one offence warning, second severe warning and third default the game.

I thought it was a timeless test, to be played out until a result was forthcoming!

A few arcane stats from the game:-
Rashid's first innings bowl was the worst by an England debutant in terms of runs scored off him for no wickets: on the other hand, his second innings figures the best by an England leggie since the 1950s at least.

Cook's wicket was the second time a double=centurion has taken the wicket of a fellow double-centurion in a test: no, I don't know the details of the other one.

Cook's 263 was the highest by an Englishman abroad since Wally Hammond in the early 1930s.

Over 1000 balls were bowled in the test before a spinner picked up a wicket, another record.

It's very easy to keep on top of the time wasting tactics, tell both captains a minimum of 15 overs an hour needs to be bowled, and for every over not bowled it's 6 penalty runs per over not bowled, it'll sure Buck their ideas up so no blatant time wasting will occur again. But let's not lie, if the roles were reserved we would of done the exact same thing (and we did in Cardiff 09)

England made a reasonable start in the Second Test Match and had Pakistan at 85-3 at one stage, with both opening batsmen dismissed, but a close of play score of 282-4 by Pakistan unfortunately shows a day of two halves.

Misbah-ul-Haq coming in at number five played a good captain's innings of 102 not out with 5 x 6 and 8 x 4

NZ are currently doing a Day/Night ODI tour game against the PM XI using the new pink ball.
While it's only an online stream you can see the pink ball.

A screenshot:

Might not do it justice.

Lunch taken on day 3 of the Second Test Match with an utter shambles to report. England proceeded to 206-3 then a middle order collapse occurred and England suddenly found themselves 218-7. Not much wag in the tail and England finished on all out for 242, 136 runs behind.

Pakistan then started their second innings and at one time were reduced to 83-3, but then an unbeaten stand by Younis with 71 not out and Misbah-ul-Haq with another captains' innings of 87 not out took them to 222-3 at close of play, with a substantial lead of 358 runs.

Apprantly reports from the NZ vs PMXI match with the pink ball arn't all that glowing about said ball. By the end of the night a few players were struggling to see it when it was swinging around and said it was more a green with bits of pink.

Day 4 on the Second Test Match saw Pakistan adding to their overall lead and they declared at 354-6, setting England a total of 491 to win.

Despite the score, Anderson still had bowling figures of 15-7-22-2.

By the close of play, England were 130-3, with Cook, Ali and Bell all back in the pavilion, still needing to score a further 361 runs to win on the final day.

************************************************************************************************

Tea interval on the final day taken with England having made a belated late recovery from 193-7 to a more respectable score of 285-8, still 206 in arrears, with Rashid on 47 not out and Wood on 17 not out.

Oh dear, in the final session, Wood is just out for 29 after a stand of 55 with Rashid with the score at 308-9.

Can Pakistan claim an extra half an hour today?
I hate that rule whether for or against England.
