I felt for him actually, 1 more yesterday and he’d have been on the honours board and also it would have been his 100th test wicket. And he would also have been only the 15th Bowler ever to get to 100 test wickets with a bowling average under 20. Something that many of the greats of the game did not do.

Just two bright spots for Pakistan:

Muhammad Abbas' 5 for 57 gives him a well deserved place on Lord's honours board
and
Saud Shakeel's determined 97 just failed to get him there too. I think many people (not just Pakistan supporters) would have liked him to have scored three more runs.

I was delighted for Abbas getting his 5-for - always enjoyed watching him when he was playing for Hampshire, and I agree that I suspect many people, me included, would have been delighted for Shakeel if he'd reached his century.

Been pleased with how England have gone about the last two tests - far less getting out to silly shots (that's always going to happen in cricket, but it was happening far too often in recent years), and the bowling has been superb. Yes, Pakistan are a poor side at the moment, and South Africa will be a much tougher test this winter - looking forward to that series, especially as it's played at UK friendly times.

As long as everyone is fit and ready to go, I'd like to see another unchanged XI for the final test - would be a while since we've played the same XI in three consecutive matches I think (I've not done any checking).

Towards the end of yesterday's TMS, Andy Zaltzman quoted a collection of statistics. It was difficult to take them all in, but IIRC, the last bowling comparable to Robinson's was by Gus Fraser, and the last that was better was by Tony Lock in the 1950s.

If we count all teams, Bob Massie took 16-137 in 1972 in the Lords ashes Test. Eight wickets in each innings on his Test debut, and still remembered as ‘the swing king of Lords’.

Towards the end of yesterday's TMS, Andy Zaltzman quoted a collection of statistics. It was difficult to take them all in, but IIRC, the last bowling comparable to Robinson's was by Gus Fraser, and the last that was better was by Tony Lock in the 1950s.

The best stat Zaltzman quoted was the one showing how bad Aggers was for England, as revenge for "Watergate"

Ballyspallen were hosting Eglinton in the North West Cricket Union Premier League on Saturday.

Eglinton were all out for 159 in 48.1 overs and the hosts were on 19, just two overs into their response, when rain hit at Ballyspallen.

However, a broken printer meant that a DLS sheet could not be produced and, as a result, the visiting Eglinton team were awarded the victory without a further ball being bowled.

Well he only played 3 Tests, but having been picked as a bowler, 4 wickets for a bowling average of 93 is very very mediocrity!

There was a reason why it was a ‘4 wickets or more’ qualification for that stat!

Zaltzman is always good fun and has some interesting stats. I quite enjoy his satirical news podcast The Bugle (on temporary hiatus at the moment due to his TMS duties ironically enough ) which he hosts with a variety of comedians.

Anyway, back to cricket, slightly farcical scenes this weekend at the Riverside when Durham had to come back on Day 4 to chase down a grand total of 4 runs to beat Gloucestershire by ten wickets. The last Gloucestershire wicket fell towards the end of the day and the Umpires ruled that the light was too poor for Durham to come out and get the 4 required runs requiring everyone to come back the following morning for a grand total of 2 minutes and six balls.

Wonder if that's the shortest completed day in Championship history (i.e. excluding days that were curtailed due to rain)?

My understanding was that the umpires had ruled it was unsafe for the fast bowlers and Glos refused to use a spinner to open the bowling, so play was halted until the next morning when Glos opened with... a spinner.

I think therefore that Glos were taking the mick a bit with their attitude as the game could have been finished on day 3 and Stokes and Carse could have had a swift pint or 2!

Pakistan respond to their series defeat by England by taking the extraordinary step of dropping seven players, calling up five uncapped players and releasing their head coach.

Pakistan's response to their series loss appears to be somewhat dramatic. 7 players in the squad replaced and the head coach sacked with immediate effect. Makes England's recent difficulties seem quite tzme by comparison.
