It would of been a better return if it wasn't a test being played for nothing but pride. Would of rather seen him play in the most than the one test.

Anyway it's all but pointless to whinge now. Congratulations England.

Yes I agree, well done to the England Cricket Team. :D

(Mind you, I do hope that for future matches they will revert to wearing the proper traditional off white/cream wool cable cricket sweaters, rather than the odd jumpers they have been wearing recently. I Noticed the Australians wearing still wearing their proper cricket pullovers.)

I see BT have got the rights to the ashes down under along with a couple of other comps

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-34038149

The next question i guess I will BT be sending over thier own commentary team or will they do everything on the cheap and just use Channel 9's feed for The Ashes.

They're no doubt going to use CH9's feed for the international for the '16 SA series and CH10's feed for BBL games.

If they do it on the cheap I would just keep the sound on mute and listen to BBC/ABC. CH9's commentary team is nothing but rubbish.
If you want insightful commontary on what is happening on the field of play with the odd story and a few laughs go elsewhere.
If you want commentary on "Dirty Rotten Pizzas", fancy dress parties and people talking non stop about inane rubbish than the actual product on the field then 9 is the place to be.

The good old days of Richie, Tony, Bill(Bill still does the boxing day game), Chappell(Still does it) of them talking about the action in front of them are sadly long gone.
At least bumble and Vaughn raise the IQ of the 9 box when they're on.

Here's sort of what I'm on about:
http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2015/feb/13/channel-nine-destroying-cricket-legacy

It's bad enough to lose the Ashes. It's worse when we had our lot doing the commentary.
About the only thing 9 do well these days is thier camerawork and montages.

Wow...that is some article. Thanks for posting. I had no idea that the Channel 9 commentary was as bad as that, on the few occasions when I have had to listen I can't say that I have enjoyed it ( mostly it has been a highlights package) I can't believe that BT would run with such a commentary team, and to be fair to the Sky lot, I think that they're OK. I go back to the old days of John Arlott et al (which clearly will never return)...but even then Fred Trueman used to get on my nerves!

I would guess they'll just use Channel 9 (and 10 for the Big Bash) for most cricket but will have their own team for the Ashes. Which, to be fair, is basically what Sky do now themselves. Own commentary team for England matches but whatever the host broadcaster puts on for everything else.

I think Sky (at least the Test Match team, those that they have doing domestic games can be very variable) manage to get the balance just about right between commenting on what's happening, analysis and entertainment during slower passages of play. Channel 9 on the other hand seem to be universally awful for all the reasons outlined in that excellent Guardian article.

It also helps, of course, that Sky try and bring in someone from the visiting (or host) team to give the perspective of the other side. Plus it's nice to have someone different on commentary from time to time.

Root and Warner kiss and make up
http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/aug/24/ashes-2015-joe-root-david-warner-bad-blood-behind-them

Joe Root and David Warner appear finally to have put their altercation in a Birmingham bar behind them in the wake of England’s Ashes victory over Australia.

Warner hit the headlines in June 2013 after making an “unprovoked physical attack” on Root in a Walkabout bar following England’s 48-run win over Australia in the Champions Trophy at Edgbaston.

The Australia opener, who apologised for aiming a punch at Root but was subsequently suspended by Cricket Australia, revealed the reasons behind the fracas in an interview in July of this year and his comments drew a prompt response from an unimpressed Root.

The England batsman said: “Disappointing to have my character questioned - those who know me realise how ridiculous Warner’s excuse for hitting me sounds but that’s his choice to try and justify his actions.”

However, a few hours after Australia won by an innings and 46 runs at The Kia Oval on Sunday to reduce the margin of England’s Ashes triumph to 3-2, the pair appeared well reconciled.

This series was 9's first time they sent thier own team over and the used thier own score graphics. Last few series it was just Sky's feed with a couple of 9 guys talking during the breaks.

Normally for an England series Bumble comes into the 9 box. He did a bit of BBL commentary as well. Vaughn is another.
I think Warnie gets a gig in the Sky box and he commentates so much differently there than he does on 9.
Sky's commentary team is miles ahead of 9.

There would be one guarantee Kerry Packer would be rolling in his grave with the way the cricket is being covered these days.

Interesting, I would have thought they'd have sent their own team accross before now!

Both him and Ponting have been in the Sky box this series and both have been very good. There was an excellent little bit done by Warne, Healy and Ponting on wicket keeping in an indoor school during one of the Tests. But generally Warnie is always good.

Plus when they put him and Bumble on comms together it's very funny but, in my opinion, not over the top.

I hope we won't just get the Channel 9 feed during the next Ashes :(

I'm a visual person!

TMS is much more descriptive than the Sky commentary. Just sit back, relax and let the words paint a picture in your mind. That or listen to the chat about buses or helicopters or cakes ;)

TBH the cricket is merely filler around the cakes, buses, helicopters, pigeons, winding up Boycott or discussing whatever randomness happens to pop into the commentators head that day!

I think they've only had the rights for the England series since 09. This series I think it they had it exclusively because the 09 series they shared it with Fox sports.

Indeed it is. The ABC Grandstand/Test Match Special team would have to be one of the best. Although on the ABC side of things we have had Kerry O'Keefe and Drew Morhpett depart in the last couple of years.
With O'Keefe we got the usual array of jokes that would last half an over:

Incredible ending to the Surrey v Kent game going on.

Kent needed 111 from 13 overs with two wickets remaining.

Now Matt Coles has a 100 off 71 balls (7x4, 9x6). 19 runs off 17 balls needed to win.

Coles has just holed out and Kent lose by 18 runs. :(

Exciting match and good to see that, hopefully, what happened earlier in the year against New Zealand wasn't a one off!

Yep, very exciting to listen to. Looking forward to the UAE - hopefully some good matches, although we haven't done very well on foreign pitches for a while.

Good to see Smith get some more runs. Can be a very handy T20 player. Remember him belting one into the Medallion Club at Etihad a couple years back and nearly belting the dining area window.

Maxwell did ok looking at the scorecard. I suppose anything's better than him leaving a ball on middle stump.
Watson well. Only that would happen to him really.

In news this morning. Michael Clarke has pulled out of the Melbourne Stars for BBL|05 before it even started. Replacement player not named yet.

Lancashire's hopes of securing the 2nd division championship in their current match against Kent lie somewhat dented by Kent's 1st innings score of 570-8 declared, with Sam Northeast scoring the day's only century with 139. Regrettably, Chapple finished with figures of 0-126 from his 33 overs, so perhaps age has finally caught up with him.

England must have been pleased when Australia were 193-6 in the ODI match, but it was disappointing to see Australia close the 50th and final over at 305-6.

I wonder if they will live to regret not being able to dismiss Australia for a much lower score than that.

I presume we'll see Mr Chapple hanging up his bowling boots pretty soon?

He's given sterling service to Lancashire County Cricket Club during his career and will be a huge void to fill.

I think in the past, England haven't treated the ODI format as important as Test cricket.

What I don't understand is how we managed to win the sole T20.

The 1st four wickets to fall - Hales, Roy, Taylor and Stokes all gave their wickets away to poor strokes (I didn't see the rest of the wickets).

Otherwise the Australian total was well within reach. The top three were all going well and a century from one of them would have been enough to win the game I think.

That's certainly true, but I was joking about their inability to play the moving ball and blaming it on the pitches. If you're going to England, you expect English pitches! You need to be prepared!

It's the Stuart Broad palaver all over again. He had a right not to walk. Admittedly it wasn't the most sporting decision, but when ever does an Aussie walk?

Gilchrist did.

But we were on Australian pitches. If you can blame the pitches, so can we.

The Pitches last summer were motorways. They were very poor in comparison to other years.

The whole Aussie campagin in England was just rubbish. We didn't at all play well to the conditions.

Now Shane Warne wants all Test matches to use a Duke ball and a white Kookaburra for ODI, he would scrap International T20, not sure if I agree with that.

That's a bit daft. Given that just about everyone in tests use a Kookaburra wouldn't it make more sense to have everyone use a Kookaburra?

International T20s area bit of a hit a giggle match but a big money spinner.

That's what I thought, it would cause mass confusion to the teams, umpires and referees. As they say "If it's not broken, don't try and fix it!".

I think Warne meant that the Duke ball would swing more in overseas conditions. I might be wrong on this, so don't shoot me!

Matters looked somewhat problematical as Lancashire then found themselves 138-4. However, Croft with 72 not out (10 x 4) and Davies with 58 not out (7 x 4) batted out the remaining 50 overs to ensure a draw with Lancashire closing on 258-4.

After 14 matches, Lancashire who have now slipped to second place after Surrey's emphatic victory, are now still 72 points clear of Northants in third place, so it was the eight points that they gained from this drawn match that ensured promotion back the top flight, along with Surrey, as these two teams have both played well this season.
