I have in the past been through the field to the North West of Gresty Bridge depot. It is a bit Wasteland like. Can see the things you cannot see from the road entrance there.

Go down Davenport Avenue and left into Hinton Road. You end up at the edge of a narrow park with a stream in it (Gresty Brook). Follow that towards the railway but just before going under the railway climb up a bank into the field/wastelend alongside the railway line.

UPDATE 02/09/2026
That wasteland is now very overgrown with brambles - forget it.

This looks to me like there should be eight 93s at Gresty. (only 93005 & 93006 at South Yard) ?.

There are no movements to-from South Yard on RTT for Thursday or Friday so I suspect there will still be eight at Gresty all Bank Holiday weekend ?.
Am I missing something (before I trek to Crewe on Monday) ?.

After thought
There is plenty of scope for light locos Gresty to/from Daventry though (these normally run Mon - Sun anyway).
But will they suddenly be 93s ?.

Shown as 66426 in TOPS - appears to be a test run after attention on the depot.

The only thing I'm not sure about is whether is whether the TOPS locations are accurate locally, or if locos are sometimes moved between South Yard and the depot at Gresty without being recorded in TOPS (e.g. to the depot for exams or to South Yard to make room on the depot for other locos).

That is true. Because four of them recently moved to Gresty (Tuesday and Wednesday via Rugby) I am inclined to believe they have not had much chance to wander off. But Gresty must be getting quite full if all eight 93 are there.

South yard is impossible to id things in but a fly past on the train to/from Nantwich would possibly indicate if more than two 93s are there - depending on what else is cluttering the distant view.

I will be going to Crewe for a long (10 hour) day on Monday (bank holiday btw).

If I have to I will do a fly past of Gresty depot on the train to/from Nantwich).
Also remember to walk round the back into the waste land (if it is still accessible)

93005 and 93006 had an unexpected intermodal outing today. The were originally going to work 0Z93 Crewe South Yard - Rugby - Gresty Bridge, but were borrowed to move some container wagons from Northampton (where 4L56 has been on the centre road since yesterday evening, with one of the wagons requiring a wheelskate). 93005 + 93006 ran light as 1Z99 to Northampton, then took the back half of the train from Northampton to Rugby as 4Z56, where they left it in one of the up loops before returning light engine to Crewe.

Been quiet for a week but today (Tuesday 15/09/2026) 93009 & 93010 did Crewe - Preston - Crewe.

Thanks. Seems six 93s on Gresty is the norm.

I was warned that sometimes 93s move between Crewe Gresty and Crewe South Yard but their move does not get reported on systems. So an actual sighting is always potentially interesting. I can only assume that 93005 & 93006 might have got to Gresty after their trip out to Northampton on 08/09/2026. How/when 93003 & 93008 escaped Gresty I cannot guess. Of course there is also a chance things change over a few days (especially if I am relying on something !).

This appears to have slipped under the radar,93001 has worked 5J65 Tyseley - Soho with unit 730218? prior to working 0M57 Soho - Derby RTC

Interesting to see how the actual locations at Crewe compare to TOPS, with 93003/93008 presumably having moved to the south yard at some point to be replaced by 93005/93006

That would make sense. On that day, 93005/93006 were originally consisted on an 0Z93 move which would have taken them from Crewe South Yard to Gresty Bridge via Rugby. When they were borrowed to move the intermodal wagons from Northampton to Rugby, the 1Z99 and 4Z56 movements were treated as "clearance of the line" which meant no schedules were created (to speed up the rescue of failed trains, normally a rescue loco moves as 1Z99 without requiring a schedule). I'm not sure what headcode they were given for the movement from Rugby back to Crewe (likely 0Z93) but it doesn't look like this ran using a schedule either. It would make sense that they ended up at Gresty as originally intended, but with no schedules consisted this wasn't recorded in TOPS.

Thanks for the insight. It makes sense that something urgent is often not going to be planned of course. Then it is a matter of if something is entered on the systems after the event - not totally necessary. I also remember seeing the two 93s had a path to Rugby and then I lost track !.

My hunch is that we can assume that there are never more than six 93s at Gresty, does that seem plausible ?.
