We finally got a ride on one of these last night between Vauxhall and Clapham J. (I think it was 22:22 from Vauxhall to Woking when we got it).

Internally, they're in noticeably better nick than the 455s (unsurprisingly) and very well lit. It was quite a smooth ride. My son was particularly pleased, in fact he looked a bit incredulous when it pulled up in front of us!

I didn't get the number (it was paired with 005 for the evening) because we were distracted by a quick conversation with the guard who was at the front cab on the platform at CJ (Sam was more interested in the driving controls I think).

All the green one's are gone. It's just a shame that they keep sending the darn things back to us, albeit with a different paint scheme and seating.

How many have been refurbished and how many are still being refurbished or awaiting refurbishment?

Don't take the toilet out... Maybe just try and persuade CrossCountry to actually pay for toilet treatment so they don't stink out the whole carriage/train!

If it's that simple, why didn't they do that to the 456s so that people could have toilets to use when travelling by train.

Weren't the toilets on the 456s constantly being trashed, which led to their removal (along with the need for more space/limited requirements for toilets on 'metro' type services) in Southern days? I see no reason to assume that either of those factors is any different now that they're on SWT suburban services.

The Vomiters will shortly be due for a mid-life overhaul I'd have thought, so perhaps the stink issues can be sorted then. However, that's not really all that relevant to 456s going to SWT...

Aren't quite a few classes of units both DMU and EMU due for mid-life overhauls within the next few years?

Perhaps they should have cancelled the services completely. I remember when the last train from Brighton was cancelled on Friday and Saturday nights due to drunks. Isn't some stations not served from Reading to Gatwick Airport late at night again due to drunks.

Another issue with the 456 toilets was that they did not have trace heaters fitted to the toilet tanks when built due to a spec oversight. This meant that the water could and did freeze in winter resulting in burst feeder pipes and consequent damage to the unit. The "solution" was to drain the systems down and lock the toilets out of use in the winter. Eventually they were locked out permanently, and, as they primarily worked with 455s which had no toilets it was no surprise when they were eventually removed.

The final downfall for the 456 toilets were DDA related, the toilet was replaced by seats from by the doors so that wheelchair users had a space within the unit.

I find that slightly ironic, given I have a health issue that requires me to sometimes need to use a toilet suddenly, that they were taken out because they were not disabled compliant. One could argue the train is now not compliant with those who have health needs that mean they might need the loo suddenly.

One could argue that, but arguing that every few weeks becomes repetitiive. You must realise by now that there is no requirement for all trains to have toilets.

If you saw the state of the toilets of a 450 when one is used on the Ascot line services, you'd soon realise that in some respects that a 456 is an ideal unit for that route.

However you'll also find a considerable number of plastic bottles filled with yellow water on them (456's) too & as one cleaner found a sausage & we're not talking of a pork one! hock:

I agree there is no requirement to have loos. One could have argues that if loos have were provided, there should be no requires for them to be DDA compliant. However it was decided that they should be in the more wider sense I mean rather than this but that's going off topic.

I guess one can't cater for every minority group out there. It's just unfortunate that a number of the stations that the 456s go through don't have loos or have very limited opening times if they do.

I wouldn't like to day which is more preferable, the left over bottles or toilets. I guess if the former is self contained fine but was it all Self contained given the occupant might have been drunk....

One only has to look at the amount of space lost to fully accessible toilets on shorter 2-car units (150s/e144) to see that fitting them to 456s wouldn't really be practical. Especially as they're used for the most part on short, frequent, suburban journeys where the lack of a toilet is not such a major problem.

I personally don't class Guildford to Claygate suburban or even the line between from Effingham Junction and Leatherhead.

I appreciate for the purposes of South West Trains they may be classed as such for the services.

I think there maybe a couple OOS today after being involved in a fatality at Whitton, unless they've changed the diagram of 2N14 to a 450.
