Sort of fell onto 017/019 this afternoon, first red 456, and first ponder is that there isn't much in the way of legroom on those bays/airline seats.

Only a bus stop leap between Clap J & Vaux so couldn't tell if there were any issues with motor noises.

I had 456017+456002+5741 on the 1916 Waterloo to Chessington South, which I took as far as Raynes Park. I sat above the motors in 6017 and they weren't behaving. Leaving Waterloo, Vauxhall and Clapham Junction they worked on pullaway, but then kept cutting out and coming back a couple of times and then remained out. Improved to just one cut out and remaining working when leaving Earlsfield and Wimbledon. When I got off at Raynes Park and watched+listened to it pull away, I found the motors in 6002 were dead. It lost a couple of minutes time as well.

Motors were fine. It did need a new digital IO card I hear, causing things to get in a mucking fuddle on the chopper control.

One passed me somewhere (yesterday) and it struck me how similar the motor noises are to a 455.
Same motors aren't they? EE507s. A lot of the other traction gear is different though. They don't have a camshaft.

Oh knew about camshaft lark but didn't know same motors, that would explain it.Cheers.

We did have chopper 455's once.;)

On a side note I've heard they are underpowered.(The 456's I mean,not the 455's.)

Would it make any difference to the 456s if they were to receive new AC packages like the 455s (though would it be worth the cost?)?

Does anyone have any information on 456 diagrams for the new timetable? I am aware they have changed, however don't have any further details.

Very true! I had 456s through Ockley a lot when they were still with Southern and I grew quite fond of them! They do sound similar to 455s, possibly sounding a little more whiney!

I do like them, they look so similar to 455's apart from the cab.Frustrating though as I last drove one last December.:-x
(My one and only time apart from the greenie in training. Also piloted 2x 456 into Wimbledon but couldn't drive at that time as I wasn't trained on them)

1D49 17:24 Waterloo-Dorking seems to be no longer 455+456+456 But today there was a 455+456+456 combo on the up fast at Vauxhall at about 17:20. The only train that seems to fit is 5V51 which is empties for the 17:37 Hounslow Looper. In the last timetable that was 458/5 (variously one or two).

2M09 0716 London Waterloo to Chessington South

On Friday evening, I saw all four 8-car diagrams and all were 455+456+456. Of particular note was 456020 on the 16:39 Waterloo to Guildford.

While passing Wimbledon depot on Friday night, there was a red 456 being unloaded which has subsequently been reported as 456005 with 456009 going the other way on Thursday 21st. So I make the current status as
456001/009/016 at Wolverton
456007/008/011/013/021/022/023 still running unrefurbished in ex Southern condition
456005 at Wimbledon for acceptance tests
Remainder refurbished and available for traffic

There was a refurbished pair running on the Guildford Ascots on Thursday. Spotted this as I pulled into ascot. Didn't get the numbers of the units unfortunately. Don't know if this was the first example of a refurbished pair running the Guildford Ascots.

I was waiting on pfm.1 at Feltham when it came in!

Narrowly missed each other then! :) I returned on the 0816 to Waterloo via Richmond, but had made it over to P1 before the 0807 via Hounslow. Only made the red 456s at Waterloo because they departed almost 2 minutes late.

Those numbers are hard to see sometimes, esp when passing at warp speed.Same with 459's.

The 456 units have them hidden at the bottom, unlike the 458/5 units where they are easier to see. Still better than original 458 units where they got hidden by the gangway.

Or did you mean on 458/5 they should have gone Desiro style? Like
Code:
458
511
instead of one line?

Saw my first 10 car formation last evening on the 1713 Waterloo to Waterloo. I have yet to see any SWT-liveried 456s in service with the destination display working, though - what is the problem here - it seems bizarre!

Think Wimbledon have enough to do without worrying about minor problems.;)

Been 1 pair out most days for the last couple of weeks now. Could well be up to 2 now. There was 1 pair out in service today and another stabled in Guildford Carriage Sidings, which would have been a pair used on the route yesterday.
