Class 456's on the move?

456 test run is running today. Same workings as Monday. Formed 456003+455734+456014 today.

We've had at least one four car 455 formation running round in service today so the 456s can't come soon enough.

I find it slightly ironic that after all this time when these things are finally ready to enter service, things are so tight that all they can do is restore the status quo rather than add new capacity. It shows how tightly things are run I guess.

I saw 456003 @ Guildford with 455 in middle and 456 on back...apparently the red 456's aren't compatible with the green 456's.Ahhh I see the pic at the top of the thread.Cheers.

Not really a surprise, I guess, since we were told pages back that the green 456s couldn't operate with the SWT 455s. It would be a tall order to make the red 456s compatible with both.

(It maybe not technically difficult to support both but would certainly add cost to the 'conversion' for no long term gain)

Why has my train changed?

From Monday 10 November we will be introducing the first of our refurbished Class 456 units on our network. They are formed of 2 carriages so will operate connected to other units to make trains of up to 8 carriages in length:
Class 455 (4 car) + Class 456 (2 car) + Class 456 (2 car) creating an 8 carriage train.
They will be in use on the following journeys but in disruption may be used on other routes at short notice:
06:06 London Waterloo to Hampton Court
06:53 Hampton Court to London Waterloo
07:39 London Waterloo to Guildford via Epsom
09:07 Guildford to London Waterloo via Cobham
Customers travelling in the Class 456 units will not be able to pass through the train into the other units as there are no connecting doors.
From early 2015 we intend to use these units in combination with two Class 455 units to make trains of up to 10 carriages in length.
Class 455 (4 car) + Class 455 (4 car) + Class 456 (2 car) creating an 10 car train.
Trains between Ascot and Guildford will continue to be operated by un-refurbished units.

I believe the red 456s can only operate with 455s which have received the PRM-TSI modifications, which is not a large number of units yet. 455734 has been used on both test runs so far, and is a modified unit.

I was expecting it to be used on 5J90 & 2J90 first as the diagram keeps saying 455/456.

The stock workings for Guildford from May state that 2D11/2G22 are booked 4-455+4-456 so makes sense that this is the first to go over.

Not the best start for the refurbished 456s. The 456 diagram this morning is reported as formed of 6 carriages instead of 8.

Yes, only 6 coaches. The 456 is on the country end.

I was on it earlier, not much different interior wise apart from the PIS.
Apparently one of the 456s had an M.A fault hence why the train was shortformed this morning.

Why?
A 456 has half the power of a 455 so inserting a trailer coach in the middle would make tham sluggish in the extreme!

I presume this came about because the use of the refurbs to reinforce the 455s is impacting their provision on the Ascot services?

On the same note, as I was watching the pair of 450s run past on their way down to Dorking(?) via Epsom this morning, I was wondering if we'll see them replaced through a more liberal distribution of 456s through Wimbledon before we see 10 carriage trains or refurbished units in Ascot?

(I also saw at least on short-formed 455 running around this morning so a single diagram reinforced with a pair of 456s doesn't seem to be enough to bring the metro services back up to full strength just yet.)

I mean, sure, they took an age sorting the software out at Wimbledon and Wolverton, but this has REALLY paid off! A friend of mine said that SWT had "crap trains", but he hasn't travelled AGA, ATW or Northern yet...
