I understand that they did a similar thing with the 455s. I seem to remember it being something as simple as moving the stoppers and changing the settings on some valves, but I'm sure someone with more experience and knowledge will correct me shortly

Didn't they also remove full height internal grab poles that were at the sides of the doors on the 455s, gaining an extra eight inches or so usable width each side?

They did, and replaced them with smaller ones on the inside of the door frame. It's still a quite annoying feature on the Southern 455s though.

Picture 044.jpg 456003 on shed at wimbledon. Also 456014 Picture 049.jpg

from what i hear neither unit is to enter service due to being full of faults , example being doors wired up wrong , 42 way jumper wired up wrong , so that unit will not work with a 455 , and many more.

Had class 450s (or a 3rd rail version of a 380 - 480?) been ordered instead at the same time it was decided to use the 456s, how many of them would have been in service by now?

The lesson of both 456 & 458 is to keep it within house or local (Eastleigh or Wimbledon), that way you can keep an eye on things much more easily.

It seems to me that these contractors are getting away with "murder".

Definitely not. Arlington are cowboys. 450027 spent almost a month at Northam after they'd claimed to have returned it to service.

There is always more than meets the eye with these things. Once is chance, twice is coincidence, they say...

Thanks for the pics but this makes me sad :( (Simply because I want to see them out and about).

Does SWT now have to fix all the faults and claim penalties from the contractors or do they need to go back where they came from to be worked-over again.

If we delivered stuff that was incorrectly wired in the aviation industry, I don't think we'd be in business for very much longer.

It all seems so long ago that this saga began that I can't remember what services that they're going to be on. Can someone remind me?

SWT never really said exactly which individual routes or services the 456s would be used on.

The main problem is that the original idea to run most of them with 455s in 4+4+2 10 car formation requires Waterloo platforms to be lengthened. What we can possibly suggest is that using 10 of them in pairs to provide 5 trains for the Guildford - Ascot shuttles is only a temporary phase.

What they'll do when they ever get 24 to play with is pretty much unknown, but the original SWT press release when they were announced suggests the main benefit will be to outer suburban and longer distance trains, including the west of England routes, resulting from a re-allocation of 450s to other services.

The following services to/from London Waterloo will be lengthened between March 2014 and December 2014
Mainline services:
0515 from Yeovil Junction (6 car to 9 car)
0543 from Salisbury (6 car to 9 car)
0600 from Haslemere (5 car to 8 car)
0642 from Basingstoke (6 car to 8 car)
0650 from Portsmouth Harbour via Eastleigh (8 car to 12 car)
0844 from Alton (5 car to 8 car)
1620 to Exeter (6 car to 8 car)
1720 to Exeter (6 car to 9 car)
1723 to Basingstoke (8 car to 12 car)
1741 to Basingstoke (8 car to 12 car)
1750 to Exeter (6 car to 8 car)
1841 to Basingstoke (8 car to 12 car)
Suburban services:
0717 from Guildford via Cobham (8 car to 10 car)
0807 from Guildford via Cobham (8 car to 10 car)
0817 from Woking (8 car to 10 car)
1702 Guildford via Woking (8 car to 12 car)
1732 Guildford via Woking 8 car to 12 car)
1757 Twickenham via Kingston (8 car to 10 car)
1848 Guildford via Cobham (8 car to 10 car)
Windsor lines:
1705 Aldershot via Richmond (4 car to 8 car)
1713 Teddington via Richmond (8 car to 10 car)
Additional services:
0722 from Raynes Park
0922 from Raynes Park

So it looks like a very complicated internal cascade, what I'm thinking is that 456s will be running anywhere 455s currently do, to allow 455s to replace some 450s, to allow 450s to go elsewhere.

2J90, 2D20, should be formed of a 10 car set (455/455/456) which initially originates in the expensively refurbished Guildford north box sidings, how long that stays as a 10 car I don't know. Currently it's an 8 car.

From what i hear the contractor doesn't get paid till the unit is in service , the two we have are still sitting on 9 road , i can only presume they'll stay ther till the contractor finishes them, we are having a bad run with contractors it seems . what with the 458 fiasco and the 2 million quid bogie drop that doesn't work at the moment(though that may be fixed by now, only 3 months after construction!!).

Good to know the contractor has to get things fixed before getting paid but I feel some sympathy for any individuals they've shipped off to Wimbledon to 'get it sorted ASAP'.

I've done site work like that in the past and the pressure of an embarrased management breathing down your neck isn't fun.

Wolverton cannot be trusted with DC stock, simple as. The 442s were 'converted' at Wolverton and i am pretty certain they've been more unreliable on GX than they were at SWT. To my knowledge most of the stuff that's been done at Eastleigh or (once upon a time) at Chart Leacon have been much more reliable.

003 and 014 suffered a breakaway in shop on 22/10 , one has had to have complete tightlock coupler replaced , the other had coupler repairs , both due in service on first week of November.

Simple. I've had a look through my diary and if the estimate is correct they should appear in service the week I'm due to be on a certain route for the best part of a week.

I'm not a fan of 456's to say the least and they're a right PITA at times & should be kept where they belong. In London.

Should be refurbished 456s in service from Monday. I presume this will be on Ascot-Guildford services.

No, planned for 4.455 and 4.456 mash-up to combat some stock shortages on the main sub I think.

This I have to see! I'll keep an eye out of the back window over the next few days (if I'm at home, that is).

Apparently there's a test train due out next week, possibly a 10 car, possibly a 6 for guards managers to sort out the issues where the guard should work the train from first, then once that's sorted then you should start seeing then in service.

My money is on 5J90 & 2J90 being the first 10 car workings, when they start.
