Wow, maybe it's just the camera angle but the leg room for the facing seats and those at the car end looks almost non-existent.

(I presume the handrail above the seats is for fitting a winch to so that passengers can be extracted? ;) )

It does look a bit of a squeeze!

Also slightly ironic is that everybody has their back to the big window and the 3 'cosy' pairs of seats are next to a solid panel and what looks like an old toilet window!!

Pretty sure 456006 is at Wolverton. I certainly haven't seen it working Guildford-Ascot services.

how difficult to lob gangways on the 6's, first there is a redesign of the drivers office, cab redesign, etc... structural strengthening, safety case, etc.....its a job that is I suspect cost prohibitive.

456 were fitted with full door closure equipment as built...the drivers seat was redesigned for DOO when they were grabbed by the South central so that their 416's could be withdrawn..

im trying to figure out why testing is happening on the shepperton branch again - if memory serves the Strawberry hill boys did the commissioning ....so this has already been done when 456 was type tested at introduction in to traffic...456 therefore has grandfather rights for SW division use....as for driving etc....they are identical to 455...so cant see an issue for the train

It is not testing. As has been previously stated many times, it is driver and guard training.

the guards do need training like the one on my train today. I was taking the 14:16 from Feltham to Whitton. when the guard decided to close the doors it was 14:14. when the train left the platform there a few angry passengers. whoops!

Does anyone know if there are any other refurbished units aside 456003?

I know 1+23 personally,I trained on them.;)

Thanks to "Bigfoot" confirming that the STP paths on the Shepperton branch are for 456 testing, I decided to go looking for it on Friday in order to get a photo :D

I think it's driver training mainly,at least that's what I did and drivers at my depot are being called up to learn them also.Still.

As I see Bigfoot has mainly said in his latest post.Apologies.

He needs training in wristwatch.;)

Is 456010 in service? Of those you've listed in service that's the only one I haven't travelled on. Can't find any pictures of it either.

Were the use of the 456s originally only supposed to be at Weekends only? As there was a double pairing on the Ascot - Guildford's again today, all 4 still in scruffy Southern.

No, 456s are planned to be in use daily. Both Guildford-Ascot diagrams on a Sunday and 4 out of 5 on a Saturday are formed 2x456 at the moment.

So if I can do maths, that takes 8 units on a Saturday with two more allocated for driver training making 10 units accounted for of the 15 currently in use. Are there more diagrams in the week to use up the others?

The only reason I ask is that I keep expecting 4 of them to appear on the way to Epsom, releasing the pair of 450s currently on 455 duty around Dorking, Guildford and Hampton Court etc.

Unmodified class 456's are not currently permitted to work with any SWT 455,other than in an "emergency" situation, which in the current circumstances would be a failure. I believe this is due to issues with the multiple unit jumpers & the silly CACU system.

456's are not permitted to be uncoupled or coupled anywhere other than a maintenance depot or sidings such as Farnham Shed,Guildford UCS,Wombledon Park or Clapham Yard.

They are also subject to some very severe speed restrictions on certain routes.

Also there's a whisper (rumour) going about that they will be removed from Guildford - Ascot services during the leaf fall season,as its strongly believed that they will not have enough power or the ability to climb the banks out of Guildford,Camberley or Bagshot. It will be interesting to see if these whispers (rumours) are true or not.

Personally I think it would be downright daft to put them over that route as they've already been proven to have difficulty getting out of Guildford on a drizzly day!

With due respect, you are assuming that but stating it as fact. Put mildly no they are not identical at all. There is the seat interlocking, vigilance, traction control & different locations of various isolation cocks.

Apologies for a delayed response but I only just saw this.

All 5 Guildford-Ascot diagrams are 2x456 during the week so that's 12 units in use Monday-Friday.

Thanks to both of you for the responses.

Thinking about it further, even without all of the additional issues that HarleyDavidson describes, if they had four available units I don't know if they'd actually be allowed to run four together for a 455 diagram. I've never seen more than two together in passenger service. (Having said that, I saw a group of three go through Worcester Park on 27th December last year but that was presumably a ferry run to Wimbledon rather than a scheduled serive.)

I presume you mean since their transfer to SWT because Southern regularly ran three coupled together

Yes and no. I've never seen them coupled up like that but as I live and move in SWT territory I guess I shouldn't be overly surprised that I've missed it. I was obviously making a bit too much of an assuption.

Thanks.

You'll be a bit infested if you work an unrefurbished one, we've seen creepy crawlies on at least two of them & I'm not talking spiders!

I guess you be ITCHING to find out! :(
