Being cynical and I am sorry but as they're brand new I would expect them to do that anyway ;)

It's like a cycle with worn brakes vs a cycle with brand new brakes, the one with brand new brakes will always stop a lot better then the one with worn brakes.

Having said that, it also depends on the driver too depending on their experience driving as not every driver has the same experience, now with all that said I'm glad the 387s are finally out on the TL. I just hope they see some weekend workings too :)

But the older brakes will always be more reliable. A lot of units (Cough458/5cough) will have teething troubles when first introduced, and if you think about it, the most reliable trains are never younger than 5 years old (e.g. 357's, 321's etc.)

387107 has replaced 105 and is now on its first day in service coupled to 387106.

Wasn't allocated when I left the office. The way the 387s are put into the system is a bit complex so may not always show up properly.

It was indeed on the 05:40 as I was on it. 387s are staying on this diagram all week.

Well, yes, but of course these are "brakes" rather than brakes. In that it is the electric motors stopping the train, at least from the higher speed ranges, and not bits of composite material on steel discs.

Mmm might go on it tomorrow then...

Know it's early but if anyone knows the planned diagram for Tuesday, if they could post it I'd be well chuffed as I will be in place to possibly do a leap on them on Tuesday morning.

Will of course be checking the forum on my return from Glasgow on Monday!

as a commuter on great northern rather than thameslink, does anyone know what's happening with regards to the 321s and 317s replacement with 377s?

great northern said it'll happen in 2016 but if all the 387s are running on thameslink by may 2015, i don't see why the thameslink 377s couldnt move over earlier?

i ask simply because the stress of overcrowding on my commute is actually going to lead me to health problems, lol :s

The arrival of the 387/1s aren't surplus to the existing Thameslink fleet, they'll displace roughly equal numbers to move elsewhere. It won't leave any slack or extra units to move over to the Great Northern side just yet.

oh god so we have to wait until the 700's start coming in? I just thought there'd be enough 387s for the entire thameslink fleet, displacing both the 319s and the 377s but sounds like i was wrong woops

Should be able to post nearer the time. Will be six in service at that point.

So an order of 29x 387/1 was meant to completely displace all 86x 319s and 32?x 377s ?

I thought there were only 26 377s on Thameslink ordinarily (23x/5 and 3x/2) but perhaps they had a few more in the latter days - I can't say I ever saw them, but that doesn't mean they didn't exist :p

But no, if you think about it, the first 700 delivery date really isn't all that far away now, probably 18 months or so - the 319s only need to be removed at a rate at which they can actually be used by the operators they're being sent to - the 387s are merely there to fill in the gap between when the first 319s go away and the first 700s arrive to replace them. With the amount of electrification going on to make use of the 319s, they're only going to need the 29 387s - by the time they'd need more than that, the new 700s will (hopefully) be coming in so regularly, that for every time two 319s leave, a 700 can take their place. Before too long there will be more 700 vehicles than comprised the entire 319 fleet, and then the 377s and 387s can be cascaded away too. The way it's being done is perfectly logical, for once :)

I think its been fairly well discussed in the forums previously (although it could be in any of half a dozen previous threads), I think its correct to say that some of the 5 car 377/7s, e.g. those now being used on the WLL, were effectively used to release a further 6 x 377/2s to Thameslink quite a few months back.

That's the 6 sets used by Thameslink that are still in Southern Green, I think the first 3 x 377/2 were reliveried as they transferred much earlier.

Someone will perhaps know for sure when the later 377/2 units transferred, if wiki is correct the 9 are the batch from 207-215.

The other recent news about any transfers away from Thameslink is that rpeople have been mentioning the likelihood of some 377/2s moving across to Southeastern in the near future - effectively they'll be replaced by 387s. But the bulk of the 387s will still presumably release 319s to other parts of the country.

we need to have a sticky about EMU cascades as im sure we are repeating ourselves over and over again about how many and where units are going. Its hard to find specific posts in forums without looking through 20 odd or more forum posts.

To clarify above...

The latter 377/2 transfer to FCC/Thameslink were as follows (displaced by 377/7 arrival):
377208 + 377214 on 21st June 2014
377209 + 377210 on 28th June 2014
377213 + 377215 first week of July 2014

377207, 377211 + 377212 were already with FCC/TL on a long term loan.

Six 377/2 will move to Southeastern from Thameslink soon as a result of the 387/1 arrival, and it would only be logical that the six are 208/209/210/213/214/215, given that 207/211/212 are on a long term loan... but this is the railway after all.

207/211/212 are about to come off loan and into fleet proper, believe its with timetable change.

Thanks, shall look forward to reading about it :) Been rather handy having regular updates about the 387s so thank you for those too!

Aha, that makes sense now then - I didn't realise the 6 /2 units being displaced by the /6s actually happened - I remember it being mooted but didn't notice it actually occur, I have seen some Southern green units on Thameslink but assumed it was the original 3 units, didn't occur to me that those might also have been repainted into now-redundant FCC colours.

Southern442 I believe that makes it:
23x 377/5 (501-523)
9x 377/2 (207-215)
Which makes 32.
Then there will be 29 387/1 to bring the Electrostar count to 61 where, as far as I'm aware, it will stay until all the 319s are gone, and there are enough 700s to cover for al the 319s plus extra - then the additional 700s will start to displace the Electrostars, probably around 2017-2018ish I suppose. I would hazard a guess that probably about 40 of the 115 700 sets would need to have turned up before that will happen, assuming the extra routes don't go live until the entire 700 fleet (or nearly) has been established.

Aren't there more fleet currently than the 115 700's to replace them?

Then again I guess that one 700 makes up for 2-3 other units.

Each 700 is either 8-car or 12-car, the current EMUs are only 4 - in effect, the 700 order is actually equivalent to 285 4-car EMUs versus the current 110 odd.

Why is Thameslink seemingly so determined to make the first class section (which is at one end only) so incredibly hard to spot until its too late to get into the right position on the platform to board it? The 319s have no yellow cantrail stripe, neither do the 377/5s and now the 387s only have a tiny '1st' on the door itself!
