Nope, not yet. They join the large family of stock with fixed end dates and no new home to go to (including 377s, 379s, 360s, 319s, 172s, 321s...). Luckily for their owners they are very unlikely to be out of service for long.

yep.... there were rumours of SWT at one point but doubt that now

Logically SWT to replace 158s allowing them to then concentrate on W of E work also gives them commonality with the 4/5DES fleet, or liverpool-Nottingham with TPE. Northern on Calder valley, Tyne valley or S&C would also be ideal routes as would Newcastle-Edinburgh stoppers would also benefit the Northumbria/Lothian coast communities. Of course we know the railway doesn't do logic....

Neither do you. SWT would have been a dumb idea as you would end up with a mixed fleet and not much commonality with the electric Desiros either.

The idea belongs in the bin anyway, as we know what First/MTR are doing.

I agree. I've never understood the urgency to replace the 158/159 fleet on SWT, they do an excellent job. Most commonly it's either 185s, 220/221s, or 222s. Leave them alone, they do the job well, and are extremely reliable, why ruin something so great?

It wasn't my idea. It was part of the speculation of what would happen to the units. I said concentrate the 158/159 on W of E which would see 185s on the Bristol shuttles and the tottons etc. Nothing about ditching the 158s which have done a sterling job since they took over from the 50s. The 185 shares a surprising number of common components, just because the traction is different doesn't mean they can't use the same depots. They are after all cleared for 3rd rail equipped routes. Logic doesn't necessarily mean practical. Yes we know what FSW are acquiring and we all know the185s weaknesses are.

I think the bravest thing to do would be for TPE to keep them all to guarantee that overcrouding is minimised at all times on all routes, I know there 101 practicle barriers to this but let see an end to the sort of wedgery we have come to know on these flow for years.

WE need longer trains right across the network, not just TPE. I understand there are length constraints on some routes but many of the routes that need longer trains don't have that problem. The chickens of the lack of train orders 15-20 years ago came home to roost some time ago, and it's the likes of myself and many of my front line colleagues who have to deal with the fallout

I'm a little disappointed that they didn't let '101 run on the weekend in order to give leisure travellers a taste of the refurbishment. However, there will have been more families travelling last week than normal due to the first week of school summer holidays for most (some schools carried on into last week)

I travel on the 185s most days and I've started to notice more constantly revving up and down when idling. Is this a normal thing?

It failed yesterday with 111 in the Morley area so it's in for maintenance

They do that from time to time it's the engine management system hunting and isn't normal but doesn't affect the performance and is usually sorted out next time it visits a depot.

Just got on 185101. Really nice inside, good choice of colours, fresh and airy. Massive improvement on the lilac mess.
Seats seem a little softer and the fabric is pretty nice. Soft carpets too.

Noticed today that 185123, whilst in the new scheme, still has the unit numbers on the cab ends, instead of the sides as with the rest of the newly livered units. Does anybody know why?
