Class 185 refurbishment for TPE.

Currently 185 109 is stripped of interior and in bits at York Siemens depot while evaluation trials are carried out. Refurbishment work on these units is due to start over the next couple of months (apparently....)

Complete internal strip? Or just seats etc? And what are they evaluating?

The last 2 185s Iv been on were in quite a state and very warn so this is long overdue. The finished result will be good and in particular Id like to see better toilet reliability and more power outlets.

Have they been able to sort out the issue with leather in First Class I wonder ? I remember something about then struggling to source leather that was compliant.

Very true however a small point about the bus companies they have a tendency to use E-Leather seats which are supposed to feel like a leather seat but without the cow. I'm yet to be convinced.

E leather isnt cow free, its a composite blend made from recycled leather and off cuts combined with other fibres.

Really I'm my eyes they are certainly not inferior to a Northern 158 by a big margin, as for Leather just as well I carn't afford to travel 1st as I hate Leather and never understand the appeal.

I hate car with Leather interiors and as well as not liking the actual feel of leather it seems to frequently crack and split in cars at least.

I don't like leather seats, "e" or otherwise - they are sweaty and slippy. A good quality moquette in a rich, deep colour with subdued lighting and end panels is in my view the way to go. Ignoring any issues of comfort and window view, I *really* like the Pendolino interior decor, for example - and the same decor looked great in the Pretendolino Mk3s.

They are, but being outfitted as a generously-spaced version of an interurban commuter EMU[1] perhaps they don't meet the image TPE are looking to portray as a "true IC operator" they wish to become.

[1] The interior is basically a more generously spaced 350/1 interior with a few more tables.

Well yes especially if you consider people are complaining about just re-trimming the original seats on 30 year old Northern 150's, in some ways it does sort of make a mockery of our franchise system and privatised railway!

On the other hand TPE is a 24hr 360 days a year TOC and the units work hard, are always busy and are bound to wear. Also IMO the interior is not suited to some of the work they are doing with end to end advances being available regularly meaning pax could be onboard for up to 4 hours.

As long as they don't use mediocre colours (like pink and green) for the interior then hopefully it'll look great.

That dark purpley/blue colour they use on the 350s would suit the 185s, although I'm not sure why they are opting for leather seats in first class.

I've already started a thread about the invasion of the ironing boards, I hope I don't have to do one about leather seats.

Though I must admit those CAF seats (same as the ones fitted to NIR's CAF DMUs) do look quite dated, a bit like old style road coach seats. Bet they are quite comfortable, though.

I'd sooner have a wipe-clean material for my public transport seating any day. Moquette attracts stains and dust like nobody's business.

For my money the budget airlines have it right with the seating materials often used by the likes of Flybe and Ryanair being particular favourites of mine

Looks an awful lot like the interior of a Class 444, length wise!

It's either one of the new Mk5b hauled coaches or one of the WCML EMUs. I forget which, but as both are CAF I suspect the only practical difference will be 1m in vehicle length (the EMUs are 23m but the LHCS 22m as it's a follow-on from the Caledonian order) and a row of airline seats or luggage rack (roughly).

As the 444 is also a 23m end-doored EMU it's not surprising there's a resemblance

Exactly the same but in 3 smaller sections It's just the colour scheme I'd expect to be the same.

Looks to be a far greater improvement to the current tatty bus-like colour scheme. Loving the wooden effect to the tables which brings a more relaxed feel to it.

The first class looks good also, although I'm still unsure as to what the leather is going to be like, as it varies per TOC.

Overall I'm very impressed

Has anyone been on the C3K/C4K units, to verify how comfortable the seats are?

Would be good to see even a slither of comfort in new-build trains, haven't had that since 2011!

Not a fan of leather seats either , sticky and slidy .
First Glasgow has hybrid e400s and everytime the bus brakes hard you slide off the seat almost !
The Class 350s interiors are very clean when ive been on recently .

Has anyone been on the C3K/C4K units, to verify how comfortable the seats are?

I was in NI a few years ago and did some journeys on the DMUs over there. I seem to recall that they were perfectly fine for journeys of several hours in terms of comfort.
