Does the colour scheme and fake wood in Standard (I do like a bit of fake wood on a train) remind anyone else of east German compartment stock? It does to me.

Good that the lighting is still warm white and not blue. Maybe First have learnt their lesson from GWR[1] there.

[1] I love the GWR HST interior but it has been ruined by the awful lighting.

Noticed this has just been posted on Twitter.

Mmmmm.

I note the seat reservations just stuffed between the head rest cushion and the main seat. I assume that leaving a slot for the reservation labels has been forgotten about - or is it meant to be there?

I shall also say that I think the decision for light coloured seats in first class will be regretted, especially once the weekend ****ed up uncontrollable rabble invade it uninvited. I am sure they will soon look grubby even through normal use.

Some better signage inside the compartment to indicate that it is First Class area would also be much appreciated.

Had one a few weeks ago. Wet and slippery tracks as it was raining on a 2 engined unit which drops to one at Guide bridge. Managed to get second engine fired up on the curve but had conked out again at stalybridge. "Keep going" came the call from control so up towards Diggle we went. 30mph we struggled to reach until inside standedge some 10 mins late. After that with the downhill run to Huddersfield she moved like the proverb until the second climb to morley tunnel lost a further 5 minutes and the service was caped at York.

Managed to push a 185 up to 88mph with just the rear engine on the ECML one new year's day. Came off York with 3 engines, lost one at thirsk and the second died at Thornaby on the way back - both no coolant. F&S out of Yarm we slipped and struggled up the bank into Northallerton where I disgorged the punters on to the following EC service just in case the final engine gave up. No flux capacitor was fitted but you could feel the heat coming through the saloon floor from that effort!

It shows you how really overpowered the 185s are one engine on them has more power (750HP) than most 2 car Sprinters except the 400HP 158s (if any of them are 2 cars)

158863-872 are 400hp variant and are 2 car.

Oh dear, looks very nice, but terrible colour scheme from a practical viewpoint.

How can 185101 be on the 1926 AND the 2026 from Cleethorpes?

I think it means that it works 1R93, 19:26 from Cleethorpes as far as Sheffield, where it joins with the 20:26 from Cleethorpes (at 22:11) and works to Man Air as a pair of units.

That's what I gathered from that info, anyway.

Today, 185101 is working the following:

0707 Manchester Piccadilly - Liverpool Lime Street 0753
0822 Liverpool Lime Street - Scarborough 1129
1150 Scarborough - Liverpool Lime Street 1459
1522 Liverpool Lime Street - Scarborough 1829
1850 Scarborough - Liverpool Lime Street 2159
2230 Liverpool Lime Street - York 0103

Looks like it'll be paired with 185131 all day apart from for the 2230 Liverpool Lime Street to York service

In 1st I agree. The scheme in Standard looks a bit dated (in a nice, welcoming type of way) but I don't think will be too bad.

In 1st if we have to have leather I'd have gone with a dark grey with black piping, looks classy and easy to clean. National Express use that scheme and I think it actually manages to make coaches look posh.

That's the 1646 HUD - DEW... might see if I can get 10 minutes on it this afternoon
On it now. Looks classy when getting on, almost thought it was 1st class with the wood tables and panels. A few bits show it up... Screw cover on my table support is badly scored and ceiling panels look patchy. But then I'm deliberately looking with a critical eye.

Seats are still firm but shapely - if anything a bit too much lumbar support, but that will probably soften up in time. Toilet appears to be little changed - new basin unit but water/soap/dryer the same. All in all, looking good.

Looks completely different, it's great. I'm just really disappointed they couldn't sort the cycle storage out.

That seems as typical as it is disappointing - attention to detail needed here. Perhaps a quick panel cleaning and support replacement job is needed to properly finish it.

But that minor point aside, it really does look nice - bringing back the feel of luxury that the wood-effect 158s had.

Lots of the trim has not been changed at all. Many of the panels are unchanged, almost every clip for the table holders has been scuffed to buggery. The trolley dock and some of the panels near it that the trolley hits look dreadful. Apparently all of these bits of trim will be repaired or replaced.

The new LED lighting and light fittings are a big improvement.
The carpet is gorgeous (note there is a different carpet for First Class).
The different wood-effects are lovely, although some of them have been fitted messily (they're just a stick-on covering) again I would be hopeful this will change.
Seat back tables have not changed but the large tables have increased in size which is nice, they are now rectangular rather than having curved edges, so getting laptops onto them is easier.
Big improvement to socket access as you can use both the USB and the 3 pin at the same time, and you can access these from airline seats.
The colours look great.
I like the blue strip at the top with the seat numbers.
The standard class seats are a bit odd, the cloth seat covers rather than the old moquette is strange and will take some getting used to. The bases are not as compressible as I would like, many 350/1 are currently being fitted with new bases because all of theirs have collapsed, and I like those better. I am not sure the stitching of the cloth and leather is up to scratch in either first or standard.
The new sink, floor covering and deep clean in the toilets is well overdue. These items will not last for 11 years without replacement in any train, because of the nature of the toilet. Take note! Toilets are still as dark as ever which is a big problem. Hand driers not replaced which is a shame. Again LM are replacing hand driers in their 350s (you can tell the new ones by the blue light) and they are much better.
First class does look good but I am not sure the fittings will be resilient enough. The table lights are very nice indeed though. There do not appear to be new curtains.
The seats have not been resprayed which I do find a bit odd. I would have thought they would be blue or grey not the slightly odd light lilac colour they are.

The onboard staff indicated that a number of the above items (and maybe more) will be looked at in due course. I am expecting those bits of trim etc to be replaced! Money is clearly being spent on this project (rather more is being quoted for it than what VTEC spent, about £32m against about £20m). It is lovely to be on a unit that has had a decent clean - this is very noticeable, especially as far as carpet is concerned or if you use a toilet.

Trust me not to be in the usual office today. The 16:41 off piccadilly is my usual train home.

Is there actually a website where you can find out which set or loco is operating? How do people come on here with the information for example about 185101's diagram today? I'm thinking there should be something similar to flightradar24.... Can anyone help?? Cheers

People like myself, BMIFlyer and Gimmia50Anyday are internal staff so we have access to allocations for that day

I travelled on this refurbished unit in first class yesterday between Northallerton and York.

I have to say it was very comfortable, clean & bright and very pleasant indeed. A big improvement on the former interior.

To all at TPE - Well Done.

I just wish Northern and some other TOC's could refurbish their units to such a high standard!

Ah OK thanks, so are you saying basically that no such website exists? Can we find out earlier than the day itself what a unit is doing so we can plan a day out??
