What does the letter "A" mean next to the unit number? I remember that the Class 321 units that used to be fitted for postal services had a "P" after (or was it before?) the unit number, but I've never seen the "A" used.

All trains have an A end/cab and a B end/cab, it helps when there are faults, so they know in which end the fault is.

I think some ex-WSMR sets are being retained for the promised London - Birmingham Loco Hauled services.

They aren't 'promised' - they happen now. There is one Moor St - London return service, and one Banbury to London return service - the latter is to allow Turbos to be taken out of service for GSM(R) fitting.

More widespread use of LHCS on Chiltern is not theoretically required until the line to Oxford opens, in mid 2013. However, I wonder what they'll do if the 'mainline' speed increase produces an unpredicted rise in passenger numbers - will they need more stock earlier?

Nice to see that the boys in Derby are planning for things going wrong now.

Seriously though, every DMU and every EMU has a cab at each end... why should these particular units be special and have painted numbers amended to deal with this?

It identifies which way round the unit is when on the depot without having to see the side vehicle number. Chiltern happen to use A or B.

Some TOCs add a number corresponding to a digit of the vehicle number - for instance on a 158 a 2 or a 7 can differentiate between the 52nnn or 57nnn vehicle. Depot staff might refer to the '7 car' as a shorthand.

This EMT 158 on Wiki shows the 7 - low down on the right.

I always wondered what the 7 meant
Thanks for that

Just heard on the graph vine that the second 172 turbostar should be arriving at tyseley tomorrow. I believe it to be 172332 but I can't confirm. I also can't get on to trust to gain times. If anyone can help with them I would be most greetful.
Cheers.

Seen 172332 on tyseley today in the company of 172331. They are both parked on the siding nearest the main line.

Nice of LM to park them right next to the running lines for all to see :) I might take a spin down to Tyseley and back to see for myself at some point.

They're still there as of 2 minutes ago ;)

They're looking mighty fine, shiny as anything as well.

I knew there had to be *some* positives to working in Tyseley!

Yes. Well they will be tested between tyseley and stratford upon avon. The paths have been there since feb 17th. From about 8 till 18. The will also be fast running down to leamington. These path will not be used every day and full testing/train will not start for another week at least. But they will be out and about. 172333 due march 22.

What's the reason for this delay?:(

Ressesion, a significant amount of their suppliers went bankrupt and terms are getting worse and worse for trade, so production is slowing down, and uncertanty of future orders means they may be trying to keep this one going.

If the govt. wanted to support our country's trade they'd be tendering Derby for a new Mk6 Carrage, initally for Chiltern and other operators to use with AAR, TDM and other coupling systems.

Slightly confused by that...

Is the logic that if a part Canadian company builds it in Derby and sells it to a company with a German parent, the value added goes to reduce the trade defecit?

And who is going to use the MK6 after Chiltern and other operators?

I can believe that there is a problem of supply caused by the recession, but I struggle to see how the rest of it makes any sense at all.

If the government wanted trains that work they'd stay well clear....

A mark 6 carriage built by Bombardier at Derby would suffer from all the same problems of supply chain as the Turbostars and Electrostars currently being built, and be susceptible to many of the same faults as have been witnessed with new units.

Plus, loco hauled carriage rakes would do nothing for Derby's current workload for the Snow Hill commuter lines, Stansted Express and short distance Chiltern workings. Until the GWML is electrified, there isn't a requirement for new Intercity trains that wuld suit loco hauled formations. It's extra capacity in the commuter trains that is needed at the moment.

Went past Tyseley today a little before 8am. With the sun where it was I got a good look inside 172 331/2.

I could be wrong, but it looked to me that there was virtually no seating installed. Can anyone confirm?
