As yet the only place where emissions standards are applied universally, not just for new build, is for Diesel powered road vehicles in the London Low Emission Zone, currently at Euro 3 and moving to Euro 4 from January 2012. None road engines are exempt though.

If that is the case, a LOT of current London buses will be redundant next January, as Euro 4 engined buses have only been in general production since around early 2007 - anything older than that (unless modified to be cleaner) would fall foul of this.

On the topic of Chiltern Railways can anyone explain the below:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/hstconnor/5417365272/sizes/z/in/photostream/

Do you mean 'why is it at Willesden'?

Possibly because of the DB connection between LOROL and Chiltern, but Willesden depot facilities have often been made available to other TOCs in the London area. Some of DB's intended Chiltern coaching stock has been seen there as well in the past.

Or, as the shot appears to be undated it may be from back when they were thinking of using a Chiltern unit on the Gospel Oak - Barking service, when the 172s were expected to be late.

That's exactly what I meant. Thank you very much for the reply. I seem to forget LOROL were planning to use a 165 as a stand in for a 172. :D

Cheers!

It was October 2006 that Euro 4 came in, although compliant buses had been being produced before then. The main issue is particulates, so a particulate filter can be fitted to enable them to still run in the LEZ, infact pre-Euro engines can be made Euro 4 compliant with a filter.

The photo is from about a month ago. The dated version is in the persons photostream.

I must add, the 165s are the best kept Networkers on the rail network. Anybody please beg to differ.

Basically in London this is the case; All Euro 2 Buses such as the X Reg Stagecoach Tridents and the Metroline T Reg Alexander ALX400s will have to be gone by 2012, unless they have the filter included in the engine that will enable them to be converted to Euro4.

I would expand but this is not the right thread ;)

I think that is why London already has no/few older busses. It might be why other areas, that I have been to when there is engineering work, get newer buses than they might otherwise expect to afford. A lot of small London businesses are bracing themselves for the "improved" regulations affecting them. Apparently the likes of one-man plumbers need to buy a new white van !. Not very popular if you are suffering from the recession and then cannot get finance for a new van you dont really need but have to get !. I suppose, generally, that might mean more business for the railways though .

i can't see plumbers reverting to using the tube with all their gear though, for businesses that rely on a van it would be very damaging having to buy a newer van to be able to do work in the LEZ.

One benefit i can see is that taxis would drop like flies (i believe brand new they are around £30k) which is no bad thing, as they are an inefficient means of transport in a city where traffic is very slow to the point that its no quicker than the bus.

In the long term, potential job losses due to sme's having to reduce staff to pay for newer vans etc would be a step backwards though.

Yup. I am afraid that about sums it up - only job creation is for the beurocrasy running the classification and testing of vehicles etc etc. So its cheaper to relocate to a third world country or in the case of plumbing (and other essentials) charge more. Thats why the SE of England is so damn expensive to live in.

On the subject of Taxis. I think they are heading in the direction of hybrid cars from what I have noticed in the more central parts of London. Usuful where a car spends half its time sat in a que not moving and the rest of time accelerating and decerating. NOT much of a parallel with the nature of long distance rail services me thinks.

Has anyone got any Chiltern or London Midland corridor fitted 172 photos? Apart from a couple of LM examples, I'm only finding shots of London Overground's block-ended examples with Google.

A link to the LM examples was posted about 3 weeks ago, I think everybody is anticipating the Chiltern examples.

lol at length of link

found it on google though?

Yeah, 99.9% sure I've seen that one already, thanks anyway. Nobody's actually taken pictures of Chiltern's yet then (none have actually been built yet)? If they have been built, are they the corridor fitted variety or the block-ended ones?

at least 2 chiltern units have been completed although nobody has actually got a pic of them yet. I think they are the same as the london overground ones.

There was a very small picture of them in the last Chiltern staff newsletter. They appear to be the same the LOROL ones with livery identical to a 168/2.

What I want to know is how easy/hard it'd be to convert the "block end" into ones with corridor connections?

(in fact, have any units had this conversion?)

I was under the impression that the 172s were designed to be modular and therefore easy to swap between 'block ended' and gangways. Well it would probably require a trip to Derby to actually do it but certainly not that hard.

That's what I *thought* but (like a lot of things) I couldn't remember whether I read it somewhere official or it was speculation. My mind plays tricks

Haha well to be honest I only 'think' that's the case but if both of us think it then hopefully there is a decent chance we're right (cue someone coming along and proving us both wrong )

If one is supposed to on test I'd imagine at least one has been built. They are going to be the blocked end ones, such as the LOROL variants.

I think it is official, but its Bombardier official. So by saying that its "a modular design and easy to swap the cabs over if need be", what they're really saying is "that it's impossible and way beyond our competence".

The first 172/1 is due to be tested on the Chiltern Line this week. Sorry, can't reveal any more detail than that.

Having visited Bombardier at Derby Litchurch Lane today with work, there was at least two Chiltern 172s on the site - one outside and one in the Works; neither of which were corridor connection versions. There was also a partially complete London Midland 172/3 with corridor connection inside the Works (I don't really want to mention the running number just incase).

Im under the impression there are lots of issues with LM172s.. What fans of gangway connecting doors dont realise is that it ruins the Drivers enviroment.
Not just space but visual too. Plenty of Signals on the right hand side on the LM172s routes.
