i disagree there isn't a future market for DMU's unless they plan on some pretty major electrification soon then there will be for next decade

No but there will probably be more wires meaning smaller production runs. Maybe Stadler have the best idea. A common design but with power modules to suit the power requirements...

There needs to be at least one last large class of DMU, even if they decided to electrify the whole network tommorow it would still take 30 years.

Already hope they can reduce delay. As i think the stock cascade is needed

First ones due Tyseley May 2011. fGW hanging onto their 142s until Sept 2011. Timeline for eventual stock cascade right there. Only two years late... TF useless the lot of them. If anyone ever gives Bombardier a contract again, they need to be slapped around heavily.

Siemens are usually good for reliability, I wouldn't count them out because of this problem which they will probably fix. The other Desiros work like a dream, yes they are more expensive than bombardier, but hey you get what you pay for. Hence the 377/5. If you do stuff on the cheap you will always end up paying for it, in the end.

Do you mean the 350/2s which are currently even less dreamlike than BR stuff and 458s, the BR stuff being far more shagged than the /2s could ever be tootling between Euston and Northampton every day?!

I get the impression as a neutral that Siemens and SWT between them are very good at cooking the desiro reliability books on the dc.
They seem to for instance have cronic reliability issues with door operation.

I've not read the whole thread, as much of it is nothing to do with 172s it would seem. I have a query regarding them, this thread seems as good as any to ask it:

I'm off to London tonight, and will have about 8 hours to ned around London before the UKR tour on Saturday. Now I've got my new book, with the 172s in it, I have got interested in the possibility of seeing some.

So, anywhere I can see them in London at the moment? They're supposed to be on the Goblin line I'm aware, but are they there?

Not sure what is actually being used on the Goblin at the moment, but if you take a trip past Willesden TMD (on the mainline would be best), I would think that there is a good chance of some being parked outside.

Towards the evening at around 6PM there are more of them in Willesden Junction TMD. The other day I noted 5.

Don't believe 172003 or 172008 have been delivered to Willesden yet. 172008 had a test run to Bedford from Derby recently but not seen any reports of 172003 anywhere yet!

Well you'd have to when you had been kept waiting so long!

The thing is, I thought the reason for the delay was down to a shortage of parts. Once they were procured, there was no reason for the trains to be built badly.

Don't know if this helps much, but I passed Willesden Depot just now and there's 5 172's in there, plus I rode 172005 an hour ago. So that's at least 6?

Both now delivered to Willesden - 003 arrived 31st August.

Just read on another site that 172008 has definitely not yet been delivered to Willesden!
