They're not going to be withdrawn yet! There's at least another decade left in them.

It is prorbably that 150002 is awaiting to be taken to Eastleigh if it is offlease, unless it is going to York or Locomotion to join the National Collection??

150002 is already at Eastleigh.

It was just something I'd read when I made post #1136 yesterday, but I passed the works today and it is visible there alongside 150209, which is formed of the two 'orphaned' carriages.

PS, the works official photographer, Carl Watson, has some evidence here dated 31st October:

How many LM 172s are normally in service in any one day ?

I was in the Birmingham area on Friday, in service were 211, 212, 213, 214, 215, 216, 217, 219, 220, 332, 335, 336, 337, 338, 339, 340, 342, 343, 344 and 345. (150105+109 were paired throughout the day mainly on Dorridge - Stourbridge services)
I presume the 1634 Worcester Shrub Hill - Dorridge is part of a peak hour only diagram as this was the only time I saw 344 working.

they need (or would like ) 24 sets in service every day ,at the moment 331,334,222 are not on the roster list working. and when they have the full lot , 3 sets will be set aside for Maintenance . of cource this depends on there reliability ? :| 1 set works up to Worcester Shrub Hill during the morning about 11am ish , lays over there till about 2pm ish then it starts work again .

Finially used the 172s and have to honestly say a massive improvement then the 150's. Seem to be a lot quieter on that curve just east of Stourbridge junction towards Birmingham.

Used the 2 car on Sunday & 3 car one earlier today.

Saw 334 go south non-stop through Widney Manor with 220 today at 09.20 presumably on a test run/mileage accumulation run.

172334 entered service today, looked nice and clean compared to the other dirty 172s .
that leaves 331-222 to come in the new year.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
172334 is in service today again but has been haveing gearbox problems , a traveling fitter is onboard to see how the unit is performing .

172211 - 212 seem to have had some graffti on them at some point ,it has now been removed . 211 had it all down the one driveing unit by the looks of it .
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
this morings trains on the birmingham - stoubridge were a bit off a mess ! seems a freight train stalled on old hill bank ,both up and down lines were a compleate mess with track leaves , i never seen the track in sutch a state ,the rails just looked a greeinsh /black mess at rowley regies and the Sandite unit did not run on that stretch of track untill around 1pm ish .

anyone now what the freight was ??

172 337 - 153 365 was on one of the dorridge diagrams . it did a non stop run from snowhill to stourbridge because of everythink running late .

I've been told it was a freightliner stacked up to the max on its way to Rugely power station.
Rails were in a bad way and there was no way in hell it was going to make it up the bank, stuck there for well over 3 hours while a rescue loco came from Wolverhampton.
It's been a horrible day trying to piece the service back together :(

Looks like someone made a boo boo, 6Z70 Portbury to Rugeley came to a stand on Old Hill as it was overweight and no banking engine, nothing over 1100-1200 tonnes gets up there without a shove !!

Diverted away from its' usual route presumably? I didn't think that the Freightliner MGR coal workings usually operated via the Snow Hill lines.

I'm fairly sure that that should go via the North and West normally, I guess some sort of engineering works stopped that?

As for 172s, is 172103 actually working with Chiltern? Got 101, 102 and 104 on Wembley depot on Saturday, and since they don't work weekends I expected I'd see 172103. Alas, no. It might well have been inside the shed, no idea, but thought I'd ask anyway.

The 1816 Marylebone - Bicester is diagrammed three class 172s (ie any three of the four with Chiltern), I presume the three you saw worked the 1816 and return on Friday. Were they coupled together ?

this was what the rails looked like at Rowley Regis st ( at the top of the bank ) no way were the rails cleaned at all for some time ,both the up and down the up lines were like it . old hill bank is 1-50 and they have let the trees just grow and grow .

Can't walk through from 153 to 172. Believe the gangways on 172s works within class only.

Well that's just a bit strange.

You would think that Bombardier would have made the corridor connections on class 172s compatible with those on Sprinters, given that there's a fair chance that any potential future build of 172s for other areas would be working alongside Sprinter classes, and that the Snow Hill lines do have need of 172s working with 153s.

There is an earlier post that says that the floor levels do not match!!!

If there's a step or ramp at the join that is difficult to see by passengers in ambient light that will probably rule out public use, but is it possible that it will be usable by staff only (similar to SWT's 458s) - so at least guards or revenue staff should be able to get through?

Connections between 153 & 172 locked & not used by anyone including staff due to differences in height & width.

the 153 was taken off the dorridge train service this morning ,1723 344 (knacker) was left to go it alone , it seems this is the end of 172-153 service , they were not compatible . the 153s were olny going to be on the dorridge service till the 12th dec anyway. a short lived trial.

if you want to hear what the 153 sounded like with the wheel flats and the Complete audio ride from stourbridge to snowhill this is a mp3 audio file .

click link , click regular download ,save , turn up the volume , sit back and imagine your on the train .:)

Shame that Bombardier haven't made the class 172's to be compatable with the 15x series especially if some further orders are placed for class 172's to replace th2 pacers as we get closer to 2020.

a 4 car 172 failed this afternoon thursday , in old hill tunnel heading towards brum , it sent the system in to Chaos for about and hour , but the good drivers and guards and staff of LM soon had it back together again for the rush hour .
