Class 139 at Stourbridge

Do both 139's fit in the shed at Stourbridge Junction? How do they swap them over when one breaks down - it looks like a single track.

Yes I'm pretty sure they can both fit in the shed. As said above they use a headshunt to swap them, in front of the signal box (if that's still there?) - actually the connection to the mainline...you'll see a limit of shunt sign on it

No, when one of the units is out the other stays tucked away and the shed door closed. Failing a break down I believe they get swapped once a week on a Sunday morning, that will be the only time both are out

If ever there was some sort of event in Stourbridge town centre, would it be possible to run both 139s in multiple? (assuming that any checks and repairs on the spare unit had been carried out).

If ever there was some sort of event in Stourbridge town centre, would it be possible to run both 139s in multiple? (assuming that any checks and repairs on the spare unit had been carried out).

I'm not sure it'll be permitted - looking at the front at them it wouldn't surprise me if "multiple working" consisted of dumping a bolt through the eye on the front bracket of the unit. Cannot see anything that would allow through connections for power etc. Maybe someone can advise, though

Why does a rescue train have to be able to multi up with whatever it is rescuing?

All they have to be able to do is physically be able to attach to each other, no air or electrical supply required, there are lots of rules and regs to follow but thats easy enough!

I doubt they can work in multi and if one of them had failed then it certainly wouldn't. I imagine one unit can haul the other one dead if necessary.

Yes think they can rescue, don't think they have the connections for multiple.

I have to disagree with earlier replies. The 139's can sometimes be seen out together. Me and my son were there on 28th October (a Tuesday) and 139001 was running up and down the branch. When we got back up to Stourbridge Jcn 139002 had come out of the shed and was parked in the platform. My son was desperate to get to Stafford so we did not stay for long but 001 was still plying up and down when we left.

No, just the PPMs run on the branch now.

Craned in I believe - from pics I have seen it was done at the town end

Maybe it is just me but I'd love the chance to thrash one on a mainline!
