Now we have some conflicting gen, that 47356 is either doing 1O03 south from Reading, or going north on 1E61. The problem here is that 1O02 doesn't stop at Reading, and if you wait for 1O03 behind at Oxford, then that misses 1E61 at Reading. So the only option to cover both bases here is ....

50017 1F17 Oxford-Reading

And of course it's going south, so we could have stayed on 47610 (or indeed waited for 1O03). Standard.

2O08 07.40 Edinburgh - Glasgow QS 47378 xos BS Haymarket - Glasgow QS
1A27 11.35 Glasgow C - Stranraer 47234 xos CF Glasgow C - Paisley GS (thanks @D6130 )
2O49 17.15 Glasgow QS - Edinburgh 47378 xos BS Glasgow QS - Edinburgh

I was reasonably smug pulling into Waverley behind 47378, but the resident platform neds were quick to tell me that 47305 xos TE had worked 1S15 and 47310 xos IM went to Dundee and back that day. 305 didn't elude me for long, but I never got 310 in the end.....

Presumably that should read Glasgow C - Stranraer?
Thanks, my scruffy notebook actually says Stranraer, and the headcode should have alerted me to my error, so apologies for the mistranscription from notebook to thread. Corrected now.

Showing how things have changed, a couple of weeks ago I again took a West Highland train out of Queen Street, not of course to get a (hopefully) new 37 but a required Class 153!

The famous "crew change at March" bail. If I remember correctly this was the last year you could do this.

For a while in this summer the Stoke-Llandudno loco and stock, instead of sitting by the seaside all day, sometimes filled in for a dmu. You had to get the gen first before going all the way there though! The trip down the Conwy Valley on the sharp curves and gradients was an excellent way of spending a few hours.

You beauty
Despite these being Haymarket engines, they almost always spent their time attached to HAAs full of powdered coal for Cockenzie PS, and were pretty rare even for us. My last 3 26s for haulage were all Haymarket ones based about a mile and a half from my house!

Oh not you as well!
Did you ever get 208 before Invergowrie though?? ;)
I had 208 before Invergowrie - about a week before - and it felt mighty creepy when news started to filter through to the office in Glasgow that fateful morning in the Autumn of 1979.

It was a really shocking event on a bit of line we all knew really well, and it was a DE driver and second man that were tragically killed.....the latter was just a young lad. I used to get a weird feeling seeing 25083 afterwards as well....which was the loco that had expired that it ran into the back of at 70mph.

I went to Norwich with a 40 a few times that year (40080 and 40172 and I think another one but my moves books are mostly non-existent from that year, I'm going on photographs!) but that day I think I was cash challenged and had 40195 to Sheffield and then went back to the Midlands for ... something or other

I *think* this (usual instamatic quality) photo is 40080 at Norwich!
