Only a week after the Pennine trains are changed to the PTPA Class 47 pool (47401/2/6/7/11/13/17/18/21/22/25), only one of the actual pool is working them. Meanwhile, the others are splattered all over the country from Inverness to Poole, and one of the diagrams still has four extra wheels.

Earlier, had seen the distinctive (just overhauled and outshopped in plain blue with a silver roof) 47478 go past with 1E82, so decamped for this on 1M76. Then came the dreaded "due to a locomotive failure..." 50 minutes later the train appeared with a very clean blue 47 with a silver roof. OK, that's weird ... then the reason becomes clear.

Gateshead had clearly wanted shot of the 45, and I suppose they succeeded, although I imagine they were expecting it to get further than Tyne Yard. Both locomotives were removed at York for 45121. Now that's a problem because 1M76 is so late that it will turn round at Manchester to form 1E93, the last northbound Pennine, and the 45 will inevitably run round. However, it's a Friday, so there is a plan B ...

47478 was one of the first 47s to be "overhauled" at a major depot rather than in BREL Works. I think 47478 received this so-called "Cost Effective Maintenance" at Stratford.
It was a notable wretch of a loco as it was one of the first to undergo this CEM process, and was always prone to leaks (air, fuel, water) and general breakdowns. So it is quite amusing that in this tale 47478 is the rescue loco!
Other locos of this ilk were 47470, 47578, and 47595.
(When I worked in Glasgow Control, one of the loco controllers always liked to "borrow" any Stratford silver-roofed 47s and see how long he could keep them in Scotland, by sending them to Inverness or Aberdeen, and avoiding any diagram which might see them heading back south towards England. I once started a fortnight with around 200 miles off Stratford's 47596, and ended up clearing it for 1000 by the end. I was on a Freedom of Scotland at the time.

It thought it had escaped by getting to Newcastle and fleeing to Plymouth on the Newcastle-Penzance. Of course, it then did the Penzance-Newcastle the next day and the inevitable happened...

Due to a WSP fault on the loco, the 1143 came to a stand near signal RC6015 (near 87mp) and then crawled at little more than walking pace for about one mile then accelerated slightly into Coventry station where it terminated. The driver was able to resolve the problem and the set maintained the rest of it's diagram without further problem.

WEDNESDAY 24th MAY 1978:

A memorable day for me. At the time I was working in the Special Traffic Section of the Southern Region's South Western Division at Wimbledon and I had been tasked to time a path for the Western Region's 'high speed' track recording train non-stop from Salisbury to Waterloo - running at maximum permitted line speed all way, with strict instructions to signallers that it was not to be delayed. As a reward for my efforts, I was invited by the Regional Chief Civil Engineer's office to ride on the train. The actual recording vehicle was an ex-Great Western officers' saloon - no. DW 139 - fitted out with all the necessary technological equipment and equipped with panoramic observation windows at the rear, in which sat the appropriate Area Civil Engineer for the section of line concerned. There were three mark 1 coaches between the loco and the saloon to provide brake force although unfortunately I forgot to record their numbers. The train had started its journey that morning from Barnstaple - hauled by 47 089 "Amazon" and we had the benefit of an experienced top link Salisbury driver for the journey from there to Waterloo. A maximum speed of 95 mph was attained through Andover and again at Pirbright Junction and we only experienced one slight signal check approaching New Malden, before arriving at Waterloo four minutes early.

Whilst reluctant to question your records might M81138 have accompanied 1840 & 9360 from Georgemas to Wick? I notice it returned from Wick later on.

The morning train was the exception to the norm of Wick front and Thurso rear as the three leading BGs in this working normally came from Perth (2) and Salkeld St and were attached to the front of the already platformed stock (including the 4th BG) in Inverness. The leading van was normally for Wick which required an interesting manoeuvre at Georgemas where the Wick coaches were uncoupled and left standing short of the station and the loco took the Thurso portion into the station to attach to the branch loco then returned with the BG to attach to the coaches and go forward to Wick. I note however on this occasion a swap of the branch loco took place which must have made this manoeuvre at Georgemas even more interesting than usual!

A bit of an anticlimax perhaps, but it ended like this due to being back at work on this night. Also there was a mini gala on the Uckfield line with more and longer trains and events at some local attractions, so I stayed closer to home.
