Saturday 15th May 1982

This was my first really good day bashing 40s. I'd done some limited moves in the earlier part of the year, but this day was typical of what the following 12 to 18 months would be like (despite the Rat on the Bangor)

25080 WBQ to Rhyl, 1D34 07.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40184 Rhyl to Chester, 1J66 09.44 Llandudno to Man Vic
40029 Chester to Bangor, 1D35 09.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40073 Bangor to Chester, 1K29 12.06 Holyhead to Crewe. Only time I had 073.
40029 Chester to Man Vic, 1J22 13.58 Bangor to Man Vic
40191 Man Vic to Preston, service unknown
Can to WBQ
40020 WBQ to Rhyl, 1D65 17.45 Man Vic to Bangor (this should have been 029)
25080 Rhyl to WBQ, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic

And there endeth all the moves I still have a record of. You never know, some others might appear...

I'll keep watching the thread though.

40029 was a notably weak loco. It was suggested that Longsight had experimentally de-rated a few class 40s with a view to reducing maintenance costs. I've no idea whether or not this was true, but I never had a good run with it.
It's possible it was just due an exam, but more likely the driver failed it for low power, hence the swap

Late 70s - early 80s.

Notoriously the "worst" one was 40018.

40177 at least would have almost certainly been "unsnipped" later on as it had a Crewe Works overhaul in 1981.
Thanks.

I was intrigued because 40119 worked a railtour on the ECML in 1979 and 40027 was used a number of times on the Cleethorpes papers in 1982. I would have thought it unlikely that derated locos would have been used in those instances?

Thanks for the list. There's a couple in there which always evaded me - perhaps for the best.
I never knew if the temporary de-rating was just a local initiative, or whether it was more widely known. So - for example - did loco controllers on other regions have any indication of the lower power rating of these locos when allocating them to services?

1979 *may* have been before 119 was snipped. Having said that they were very variable (40117 in particular didn't appear to have many issues). The Cleethorpes papers wasn't an onerous job so it's unlikely to have been seen as a problem. I had 027 a number of times in 1981-82 and it went reasonably well with a middling load.

No, they were only downrated slightly (to around 1800hp was the plan, to make them more reliable and extend maintenance times, using the governors and control electronics). I'm pretty sure 99% of anything they'd have been allocated to could be dealt with by a "snipped" loco.

I refer to my experience with 40029 on the Highland Main Line earlier in this thread:

Doesn't surprise me. 29 was one of the weaker ones and putting it up the Highland was asking for trouble. Mind you, I had ECML stalwart 40068 up the middle on the sleepers and it really struggled too.

It seemed to be a favourite on 1M71 09.00 SO York to Llandudno in 1982. I had it three times on that service and it did at least one more.

@Graeme.Hutchis That was the day that there was supposed to be an open day at either Eastfield or Glasgow Works IIRC. I was also on the 06:55 Preston to Glasgow, all the way from Lancaster to Glasgow that morning heading to it, we found out at Carlisle that the Open day was cancelled, but we carried on to Glasgow anyway. I have lost most of my moves from that day, however I was also on 37033, 47464 and 81005, baled off that at Carstairs for a cross platform dash for 47459 on the Edinburgh portion shunt, then back with the 81 to Lancaster. Not sure what I did in between 47401 and 37033 though (if anything!)

THURSDAY 18th MAY 1978:

Another after-work Crompton bash, but this time on the 18 10 Waterloo-Salisbury instead of the 19 00 to Exeter, in order to get a required 33/1:

7338/7130/7396 Petersfield-Waterloo (06 23 from Portsmouth Harbour)
7414/7829 Waterloo-Wimbledon (08 08 to Woking)
5129/5114 Wimbledon-Waterloo (17 14 from Effingham Junction)
33 108 + 434/406 18 10 Waterloo-Woking (to Salisbury)
7051/7052/7391 Woking-Petersfield (18 20 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour)

This was day of unusual workings on the SWD. Not only the appearance of ex-works Ramsgate-allocated 4-CEP no. 7130 sandwiched between to 4-CIGs, which caused severe overcrowding on a service booked for 12-VEP....but also two buffet units on the 18 20 from Waterloo - with only one in use of course.

That rings a bell (17/05/1986). Myself and a friend travelled all the way from Kent to Glasgow to discover the open day at Glasgow works had been cancelled !.

A few years ago I was disappointed when the Wolverton Works open day was cancelled but a lot further in advance.

TUESDAY 19th MAY 1981:

There was obviously some problem on the Singer line that evening.

THURSDAY 19th MAY 1983:

One of my friends from Petersfield's stag night in London:

Followed by various Underground journeys in London to some drinking establishments of which I have only hazy memories....ending up on the Jubilee Line to Kingsbury, where I spent the night at another friend's grandmother's house.
