Saturday 8th May 1982

I posted most of this a year ago, but I've now got the 87 and the details of the services I was on. Not a bad day, well afternoon and evening really.

87022 WBQ to Crewe, 1A40 09.35 Carlisle to Euston
85012 Crewe to Birmingham NS, 1V41 11.20 Liverpool to Paddington
50036 Birmingham NS to Leamington Spa, 1V41 11.20 Liverpool to Paddington
50049 Leamington Spa to Banbury, 1V48 14.38 Birmingham to Paddington
50026 Banbury to Birmingham NS, 1M15 15.50 Paddington to Birmingham
50032 Birmingham NS to Leamington Spa, 1V64 16.23 Manchester to Paddington
50035 Leamington Spa to Birmingham NS, 1M16 17.41 Paddington to Birmingham
One or two Cans back to WBQ

Sorry, this is a bit of a late reply.

There appear to be a lot of 50s on the Reading-Birmingham section. Was this typical for the 1981/82 timetable? I do remember there were perhaps just one a day in each direction by 1983/4 and 1984/5. Not sure about 82/83 - this was the year of my first XC trip but didn't really start noting traction until summer 1983.

It's odd how some locos become rare for haulage. 90025 has always been elusive. I think there may have been some technical reason that kept it off passenger workings for some time - can anybody remember? I haven't had it since 1991, which suddenly seems a very long time ago.

As I said in an earlier post "The Burma Star" (33 056) seemed to be considered rare for haulage, or even to see, on the Southern Region. Not sure if there was anything in that, for example maybe it focused on Crewe-Cardiff services? Or perhaps it was just an urban myth.

(Again sorry for late reply, going back over these)

Was this booked? I thought sectorisation meant the end of 50s on the Birmingham-Reading section (I presume this was headed towards Reading) by around 1986/7 or so.

Another day I remember what I was doing, as I spent the day at Woking. Conceivable I may even have taken this train, as I tended to arrive there mid-morning. Way too long ago to remember any of the actual allocated units/locos, and I certainly don't have records these days, but I would have presumably noted the unusual VEP on this diagram, as it repeated every 4 hours.

It was a regular service train, 1V96 14:41 Birmingham NS-Paddington (via Coventry and Leamington), and was the return working of the 09:40 Paddington-Birmingham NS. Class 50s regularly worked the diagram, up until the 1989 May timetable change. After that IIRC, it was retimed to a 13:45 departure, but still Class 50 worked until May 1990.

Ah ok, thanks for that. This (about 1987-95) is my "blank" period for XC.

On my first Freedom of Scotland, doing the overnight from Edinburgh to Inverness I opened my eyes at Perth to see 47402 trundling past. There was no escape from the Generators!

I think so. 81/82 and 82/83.

The Jacobite

08.41 Helensburgh Upper to Mallaig
(07.53 from Glasgow Queen Street).

Load 9 coaches throughout. The first of many trips to Fort William and Mallaig.

Helensburgh Upper to Gorton 256 ‘Glen Douglas’ + 64632 (J37). At Gorton 64632 was detached ‘overheating’ .
Gorton to Rannoch – 256 unassisted (and obviously built up enough momentum on the falling gradients across the Moor to conquer the final rise at 1in 50 from The Gaur Viaduct up to Rannoch!)
45 min late passing Bridge of Orchy became 1 hr 39 late departing Rannoch
Rannoch to Fort William – D6137 + 256
Fort William to Mallaig – 64636 + 64592 (by now two and a quarter hours late from FW).
On arrival at Mallaig both locos ‘unfit to return’. Fortunately there was a diesel on hand.

14.30 Mallaig to Helensburgh Upper (to Glasgow Queen St). Departed at 17.12 – D5351 throughout with shunt to release loco at Fort William by D4097
Lateness departing Fort William reduced to just over two hours from Fort William and reached Helensburgh Upper just after 23.00 (due at 21.04)
With acknowledgments to Six Bells Junction for much of the fine detail which has leaked from my memory over the 59 years which have elapsed since that day although I do have some photographs somewhere.

Without the detail from Six Bells Junction the various legs would have been summarised as ‘256 + a J37’ / ‘256’ / ‘NBL Type 2 + 256’ / ‘2 x J37’ and for the return, ‘BRCW Type 2’, arriving home approx. 2 hrs late around 23.00! And with no mention at all of the long forgotten role of the Fort William yard pilot.

That's quite a eventful day out - and is this the furthest back in time we've been on this thread?

Seven locos for haulage on the one trip, not a bad haul.

That sure was some day out! I never managed to get D6137 for haulage as a class 29 rebuild - let alone in its original form - and I'm pretty sure that I never had any of the steam locos. I'm quite impressed that it managed that onerous task without failing/going on fire/exploding, etc, etc. As for D5351, I had it for haulage on numerous occasions and it still lives on to this day as 27 005 at Bo'ness.

Excellent day out, few reports get posted on this thread from that period. I saw the “Glen“ 256 stored inside Haymarket shed, alongside a couple of A4s six weeks prior to that tour.

The furthest back in time I have gone on the thread (post #1576), was a trip to York on 22nd August 1962 when I was a young teenage. Maybe a few more from the steam era will appear?

Courtesy of Six Bells Junction I have found another Steam Tour I was on, this time from 1965 - I could already quote loco numbers and route but could not recall the date. Watch this space for a couple of Gresley Pacifics in the coming days.
