Jumping back 40 years and 2 days, I was able to get the train back from Goole to Manchester, stopping at Doncaster to watch the Deltic special pass through.

Didn't record DMUs or haulage (some sort of DMU to Doncaster, almost certainly a Class 123/124 lashup from there to Manchester.

Mid-way through my last pre-Covid Interrail. All First Class so very much enjoyed availing of the compartments on the ICE1.

Also managed ample loco haulage as the RE from Halle to Jena was solely in the hands of 112s and tarted up older Dostos, though do recall an annoyance with the vending machine at Jena-Paradies after it swallowed my change and my purchase got stuck - alleviated after a passenger saw and put their own money in to assist - we both ended up with something at least!

Donauwörth also a pleasant little town to wander around. I remember having about 40 minutes or so and I managed to do a nice circuit before continuing onwards to Augsburg.

I was also pleased to have managed the Swansong of 101s and their older hauled stock on the RE1 from München to Nürnberg. By this time the 102s and Skoda double-deck stock should have long since been in service but were plagued with reliability issues. I do recall First Class wasn't up to much, but it was at least arranged into compartments.

Racking up those VEP miles! You did well to get 319004. It was a bag of bolts during its career with Connex. I wasn't at all surprised when it was the first of the class to be scrapped. Those Brighton to Rugby runs were bizarre but they wasted seven class 319s and got them off the Horsham line.

Living in Kent, I was largely lumbered with VEPs, though of course there were the CEPs and later some CIGs joined them.

I found those workings were a useful way to get from the Southern to the WCML and back without using the Underground and had most of the 319/0s doing that. Ironic now that they are running out of Euston!

The CEPs and VEPs did have booked diagrams though of course substitutions were common. I had two attempts at covering the entire South Eastern main line network on CEPs in a day. Managed most of it on both occasions. I'll have to dig through the notebooks and post the moves.

The heaters on the former Connex 319s still don't work, if recent experience is anything to go by. Some things never change. I think it's fair to say I miss the VEPs more than the I'll miss the 319s. The former were always toasty warm on early trains out of Horsham, the latter were flipping freezing.
