I had planned a trip on the sleeper to Inverness. Unfortunately it all unravelled very quickly. The WCML was closed at Beattock due to flooding / landslip, so the 2115 to Inverness was cancelled, and I was rebooked onto the 2350 to Edinburgh. That was diverted via the ECML – but there was also a scheduled engineering block between Darlington and Newcastle, so trains were being diverted via Sunderland. This is what happened:

390 013 1929 Rugby – Euston
86401 2350 Euston – Wembley Yard via Low Level Goods

Saturday 09/01/16
90045 0026 Wembley Yard – Doncaster RMT via Gospel Oak, Camden Road, ECML
47848+47843 (+90045 DIT) 0318 Doncaster RMT – Newcastle via York, Northallerton, Sunderland, King Edward Bridge.
The 47s were in multiple – the first time I’ve had a pair of 47s in multiple on a scheduled passenger train.
90045 0621 Newcastle – Edinburgh Waverley
At Edinburgh I doubled back south to have a run around the Durham Coast in daylight:
91106 0900 Edinburgh Waverley – Newcastle
67008 (+91106 DIT) 1050 Newcastle – York via Sunderland, Northallerton
43277 + 43302 1254 York – Perth via Northallerton, Sunderland, King Edward Bridge, Edinburgh, Stirling.
Train terminated at Perth due to line flooded at Pitlochry.
Bus Perth – Inverness.

390 035 0746 Rugby – Euston
43300 + 43057 1803 Kings Cross – Doncaster
86101 2020 Doncaster – Kings Cross
This was the first run in normal passenger service of 86101 after reinstatement. It was hauling a rake of 6 blue+grey Mk 2s for Hull Trains.
390 013 2240 Euston – Rugby

Monday 11/01/16
The Highland Main Line had reopened after flood damage repairs, but the WCML was still closed at Beattock, so this was going to be a long night!
67011 2044 Inverness – Edinburgh Waverley via Perth, Stirling.
This had been planned to run to Braidhurst Loop, to attach the Fort William and Aberdeen portions there, but was VSTPed to run to Edinburgh.

Tuesday 12/01/16
66720 + 67009 0201 Edinburgh Waverley – Carlisle via Shotts, Bellshill, Larkfield Jn., Dumfries. The 66 and 67 were coupled in multiple, but the 67 only appeared to be providing ETH, not traction power.
90043 0441 Carlisle – Euston
Arrived Euston 1021, compared with rescheduled time of 0952, and normal time of 0744.

I don't believe they did, but after completing my 90 bashing session, I was going to head home. I then saw the pair in Liverpool St and decided to do for the novelty value. Hoped for a return but you can't have everything! I think there was some engineering works on the WAML and as such the 379s were underused, so some were used on metro turns.

Summer 1996 I had two attempts at getting all available CEP routes in a day. I had no diagrams or gen on the day. It was all down to luck.

The first attempt on 11/7/96 appears to have been the most successful overall. I've lost one of my notebooks but looking at my spreadsheets, the only bits I missed were Cannon St, Blackfriars to Herne Hill, Sittingbourne to Sheerness and Tonbridge to Hastings/Ore. The latter was mainly CIGs but CEPs did appear sometimes.

The second attempt was on 13/8/96. This time I got Sheerness but missed Dover to Tonbridge. The crucial train off Ramsgate produced a VEP.

Five years ago today I rode the Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town shuttle. All one carriage of it. Thank you Facebook for reminding me.

After failing to provide any kind of service to take me to Manchester yesterday morning, today is rather better:

68026 Leeds – Man Pic 1U28

Getting back again this afternoon might be more of a challenge.

In hindsight, this was one of those days when “Work From Home” was the best solution, but alas I had to deliver some urgent paperwork to the office…
390 039 0925 Rugby – Ledburn Junction
Started off 80’ late, and was 120’ late by Ledburn, because of speed restrictions due to high winds. At Ledburn the OLE got tangled around the pantograph, and came crashing down around us. The power went off, and we stood in the cold for a very long time. Eventually rescue arrived …
57308 1748 Ledburn Junction – Euston, arrived 501’ late, or a mere 8 hours and 21 minutes late in old money.
390 034 2240 Euston – Rugby
60’ late, restricted to 50 mph due to high winds.

Monday 17/01/11
90045 had put in another appearance on the EBW services, so I hung on at work to catch it home.
90045 1843 Euston – Birmingham International
390 021 2000 Birmingham International – Rugby (SNAP with 1971martin).

Tuesday 18/01/11
Another day, another 90 on the EBW services. This is the one I’ve been waiting for. 90047 was out! Until that point, I’d had 49 class 90s for haulage, and 90047 was the only one I had missed. I’d been stuck on 49/50 since 2003, and had been waiting patiently for it to work a passenger train so I could clear the class. It had to be done!
90047 1443 Euston – Birmingham New Street
90047 1630 Birmingham New Street – Coventry
350 120 1701 Coventry – Rugby
Job done, class cleared. I had been on the first passenger run of a 90 on 12/07/88, so it took me nearly 23 years ...
__

Sunday 17/01/16
Another Caledonian Sleeper bash, with more novelty routes involved.
390 124 1721 Crewe – Euston
90045 (yes, that loco again) 2104 London Kings Cross – Doncaster RMT
This was the first scheduled sleeper train out of Kings Cross since 1988.
47848+47843 (+90045 DIT) 2320 Doncaster RMT – Newcastle via York, Northallerton, Stockton, Sunderland, High Level Bridge.

Monday 18/01/16
90045 0216 Newcastle – Edinburgh Waverley
67007 0450 Edinburgh Waverley – Fort William via Bathgate, Queen Street Low Level, Westerton.
Bus Fort William – Inverness
67011 2044 Inverness – Edinburgh Waverley via Perth, Stirling.

Tuesday 19/01/16
90045 0135 Edinburgh Waverley – London Kings Cross
20’ early into Kings Cross, the first scheduled sleeper train arrival since 1988.
68012 0841 Marylebone – Birmingham Moor Street
390 156 1115 Birmingham New Street - Crewe

Is that the first appearance of an 09 on this thread?

No Cat for me this morning. 1U28 caped at York. With the 08:00 off Leeds already a planned cancellation, it is a pair of Northern 195s taking me to Manchester - a repeat of Monday.

TPE are a joke.
