    Taunton Fairwater Yard

Fairwater yard is a base for several High Output Ballast Cleaners and other similar vehicles. Nothing seems to have moved for a long time and the wagons are attracting graffiti. Is it still an active yard?

Sugar Cane Railways of Indonesia on YouTube.

For a while I’ve been watching videos on YouTube of narrow gauge railways that serve the Sugar Cane plantations of Indonesia. Some of the practices that happen there are somewhat eye opening. I’ve linked a few videos on another thread before, but here are two videos from ahmad arif 29. One is...

    Oulton Broad North station fire.

The BBC are reporting that the station building has gone up in flames. It is occupied by an Indian restaurant. Pictures show the roof to have gone and the subsequent affect on railway services. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp3l4zqq532o?app-referrer=search Image caption, The roof of the...

What influenced where BR scrapped its own locos?

Looking at the history of scrapping diesel locomotives especially in the 70/80s who decided what was scrapped where? Using Swindon as an example class 08s, 13s, 25s, 27s 40s and many other classes were scrapped a long way from their own regions/depots. Was it cost effective to dispatch condemned...

The 1148 Penzance-Exeter has come to a stand near the former Aller Junction near Newton Abbot. Flames and smoke have been seen from one of the bogies and the traincrew using extinguishers to put out the flame before the fire brigade arrived. A friend has just sent some photos.

    Television Adverts You Like.....

As opposed to the annoying advert thread I thought i would start one about adverts you like. I really like the current Battersea Make a Will advert featuring Leo the cat and his keeper. It has quite a touching storyline and gentle. Adverts do not have to be in your face to be effective.

1950s film of Exeter area, plus Cotfield Box?

This film from Memory Media appeared on my YouTube feed. It shows locomotives and trains in and around Exeter and the sea wall at Dawlish. It also shows what is possibly Cotfield signal box. This was a break section box between Exminster and City Basin Jct and has been a very elusive box to...

    Maam Cross signal box destroyed.

I’ve not seen this reported elsewhere on the forum, but sad news that a fire has destroyed Maam Cross Station Cabin. The box is on the Connemara Railway in Ireland and was only rebuilt a few years ago. Here’s a photo from the Irish Mirror showing the building well ablaze.

History of BR Standard Bakelite (Penguin) Block Instruments.

The history and development of many block instruments is well known, the Bakelite block (IMO) less so. We’ve heard of Preece,Fletcher etc but who designed the Bakelite and when? (edited due to finding a previous thread)

    Docks & Inland Waterways Executive

The above was created in 1948 and abolished by the British Transport Commission in 1962. What is known about this Executive, presumably it looked after the Commission’s interests in Britains waterways? Here’s a picture of what appears to be their uniform buttons.

Docks & Inland Waterways Executive buttons.

Whilst having a rummage around this morning I came across a couple of buttons that I had forgotten about. They were in a rummage box that I had acquired many years ago and dismissed them not thinking they were railway related. Today I googled the initials and found they appear to come from the...

    Watford DC line 4th Rail.

Watching a video on YouTube it still shows the 4th rail in place beyond Harrow & Wealdstone towards Watford. In places it looks intact, in others it’s either derelict or missing. Since the Bakerloo hasn’t run north of Harrow since the 80s, why has there been no rush to recover it. Is it still...

    31258 flame cut cab side.

About 25 years ago I purchased a flamecut cab side numberplate from 31258 for £5. The loco was renumbered to 31434 in 1984. Why would an un-renumbered cab side still exist so long after re-numbering?

    BBC Irish railway film.

A BBC film has appeared on their YouTube channel about the closure of railway lines in Northern Ireland. Made in the 1950s it is very reminiscent of what happened a few years later in Britain with the Beeching/Marples carve up. It basically says replace the branch lines with buses and invest in...
