There are only very few trains that run direct from Dinting to Hadfield and then on to Glossop on their journey from Manchester (and none at all in the MAN bound direction). I think it's now just the first trains from MAN (every day) and the last train from there (except Sunday). Didn't there...
Southern have had a run of bad luck - the Lewes derailment, a landslip between Polegate and Eastbourne suspending trains on that route and now a track inspection suspending services for the rest of the day on the Uckfield Line south of Hurst Green (and as a knock-on no Spa Valley trains between...
The signal at the south end of [the traditional down] platform 2 at Tunbridge Wells [Central] has long struck me as unusual.
There are two routes available at this signal:
1. Into the turnback siding just beyond the station
2. On to the single-line track towards Hastings (when the "feather"...
A friend has just collected an Advance ticket (ordered online) for a return journey entirely on Southern trains.
Although the ticket has the usual "valid on specified trains only" message on it, the times of the trains involved aren't shown anywhere.
Seems strange - haven't seen the actual...
I don't know what made me think of this but in the days when London Underground trains had guards, the guard closed the doors and gave the driver a single bell signal when it was safe to start.
On National Rail trains with a guard, the time honoured starting signal to the driver is two rings...
I'm old enough to remember 4SUBs in service - I was looking at photos of some just now, which brought back some memories. I has always struck me as odd, that the right up to the end, they didn't have bells for the guard to signal to the driver but relied on green flags or lamps for the "right"...
I recently found a photograph of Class 501 unit that I took in September 1983. The unit appears not to have the red electric marker light that other members of the class carried.
The unit in the photo is travelling towards the camera so no problem arises, but how would this unit have displayed...
I'm intending to travel to Blackpool North from Euston on 31 July (a Wednesday). The 1036 direct train (1P91) is not shown on the VT or NRE websites (and does not appear on Real Time Trains) if I do a search for that date. A search for a random earlier date (3 July) does, however, show it as...
It appears that the self-service ticket machines at MYB do not sell Super Off-Peak Returns (for instance, to Warwick) and only offer the much more expensive Off-Peak Returns. Very naughty (and surely something that the Office of the Rail Regulator needs to address?).
Apologies if this has been posted before, but Cross Country now charge £1 to collect tickets from a ticket machine when booking via their website. I took my mouse elsewhere.
The thin end of the wedge?
Now that the new South Western Railway franchise has lurched into life and the FAQ bit of their website confirms that they will not be issuing the six free tickets with new Gold Cards that the previous franchisee did (although they will honour existing freebies), the IoW Gold Card isn't quite...
I've booked, via the Virgin West Coast website, an off peak return from Euston to Blackpool North and at the time of booking reserved seats for the outward and return legs. I picked up the tickets from the ticket machine at my local (Southeastern) station the other day and when was bemused to...
At Charing Cross this evening, the 1654 to Dartford was diverted to run via Woolwich Arsenal rather than taking its normal Sidcup routing because of the derailment at Lewisham. The digitised station announcement system said (at least twice) that the train was formed of thirteen coaches. Has...
For the first time ever yesterday, I encountered a problem when attempting to collect tickets ordered online from a ticket vending machine (TVM), a process I've carried out dozens of times without incident.
The tickets (two advance singles, one for the outward journey and one for the return...
