Bizarre AI results for Rail Related Enquiries

Does it? Can you search without registering? If, so just search for “class 37 cover”. Because we all know that all AI generated British locos are Class 37s. Or try “British Rail cover”. Example “Rusty Class 37 Locomotive Print Cushion Cover, 45.72x45.72 cm”

Bizarre AI results for Rail Related Enquiries

Temu sell a range of railway themed cushion covers, the images on which I presume are AI generated. Superficially they do look like classic British railway oil paintings, but they are just so wrong, almost nightmarish. The AI doesn’t always seem to know that track has two rails, that diesel...

    Closed heritage railway stations.

On the Cleethorpes Coast Light railway there is the closed Discovery Halt. Also, the Humberston terminus has been out of use since 2019 due to issues with the level crossings. Not sure if any progress has been made reopening this part of the railway. The railway’s website “History” section...

Horton in Ribblesdale station to get footbridge, with lifts.

Seems like the lifts will not be working for some time yet. Problems with the power supply, according to this report in the Craven Herald. http://archive.today/2025.06.12-112034/https://www.cravenherald.co.uk/news/25231425.passenger-lifts-horton-not-operational-end-year/

Lord Blunkett sets out plan to fix Yorkshire’s railways

My suggestion was for a Doncaster to Barnsley via Wath service that could be extended to either Huddersfield, or Halifax and Bradford. Nobody was suggesting that passengers would use it all the way from Doncaster to Bradford

Lord Blunkett sets out plan to fix Yorkshire’s railways

You mean the Grand Central Bradford to London trains? Four trains per day, morning/afternoon only southbound, afternoon/evening only northbound. Not really set up as a Yorkshire interurban service, is it?

Lord Blunkett sets out plan to fix Yorkshire’s railways

"Waverley" is the name for the redevelopment of the old Orgreave coke works / opencast coal mine site. I'm presuming that the new station will be between Darnall and Woodhouse on the Sheffield to Worksop line.

Which railway lines are the least used in this country?

For through freight-only routes, I was going to suggest the Grimsby to Immingham single line (which actually has some traffic today!) and the Worksop to Doncaster South Yorkshire Joint Line...

    Northern printed timetables

Was this a professionally printed booklet, or a station DIY photocopy/inkjet job on A4 paper?

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. My dad decided to replace the moulded mains plug on a set of Christmas lights last year, as the cable was frayed nearby. He did a decent job of the wiring, tightened to cable clamp, etc. Trouble is that the “plug” that he replaced was in fact a 240V...

Wearing a "railway uniform" to fare evade ?

I have a Mountain Equipment jacket that is a similar colour and style to Northern staff uniform. I bought and have been wearing it since before Northern introduced their jackets. On a couple of occasions, guards have commented “I thought you were staff for a minute there”, but I have never been...

    Supermarkets discussion

If I ever visit the shop again, I will be keeping an eye out for expensive items “accidentally” placed on shelves next to low amount price labels. Those labels aren’t that securely attached to the shelves, and I imagine that they could easily fall off. The breeze from the huff of a disgruntled...

    Arresting Runaway Wagons

There’s a video on YouTube showing how the Tinsley automatic system operated. Punched tape and pegs in holes.

What features should a GBR loyalty scheme have?

Loyalty scheme? Alternatively, they could just make the fares cheaper in the first place. Supermarkets seem to be moving away from loyalty points, towards discounted members’ prices. The railway could do the same with its loyalty card. You could call it something like the “National Railcard”...

    Low-hanging fruit for fare reform

For those suggesting that the Routeing Guide be abolished and that we “go back” to “any reasonable route”, did that ever exist? There was a 1952 Book of Routes that was deemed necessary. Much less complicated than the current Routeing Guide, partly because it was recursive.

Lord Blunkett sets out plan to fix Yorkshire’s railways

Barnsley and Doncaster are sizeable towns. Just because neither is a self-appointed “regional centre” doesn’t mean that a Doncaster-Wath-Barnsley rail service should be dismissed outright. And the trains need not terminate at Barnsley. They could be extended to Huddersfield via Penistone, or how...

    Northern printed timetables

The station produced A4 photocopies or inkjet printouts don’t look professional though. Smudgy printing and not proper booklets. Of course there is less demand for printed timetables than in the past, but there clearly still is a demand. And no, it’s not just “enthusiasts” (who can get much more...
