East-West Doncaster avoiding lines (current usage)

I remember a test train going that way some months ago, but I don’t think that it currently has any revenue earning traffic. Telling is the fact that there are regular Google Glassworks to London paths (not sure if the trains actually run) that could go that way, but are instead routed through...

East-West Doncaster avoiding lines (current usage)

I believe that the OP is thinking if the northern end of the South Yorkshire Joint Line (Low Ellers to Kirk Sandal junctions) rather than the Doncaster avoiding line (Hexthorpe to Bentley junctions).

"Mini Switzerland" - Peak District transport integration

From the report - “Our proposal includes a new PlusBus ticket covering the whole of the Hope Valley network, making it possible for rail travellers to get a great value combined train and bus ticket .” The Peak District PlusBus already exists (£6) with interchange stations at Buxton and...

Train tickets sold as scratchcard or stamp it yourself or use when you wish formats.

I’ve still got an unused West Yorkshire bus & train scratch-off DaySaver, expiry end of 2027, in my stash. Useful if you’re starting your journey on a bus. I hope that they are still available to buy, so I can replace it when it gets used.

Rail Freight Flows and News UK

That’s interesting. How (and more importantly why) does the ash get from Ratcliffe to Maltby for loading? The two places are nowhere near one another.

Rail Freight Flows and News UK

Yes. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:R24155/2025-12-15/detailed What was the cargo here? The pit is long closed and the site was mainly being used by a secondhand industrial plant dealer. Reclaimed coal from the spoil tips? Limestone from the nearby quarries?

Restriction 8A - restrictions on return leg?

Yes, far easier than making the effort to check and mark/stamp passengers’ tickets, and no thought for anyone who wants to do an overnight BoJ on the outward leg of “short” journeys like Holyhead to Berwick upon Tweed (TPE this time, not Northern).

Restriction 8A - restrictions on return leg?

Press release from the time of introduction of SHR Anytime Short Returns Introduced on the premise of giving passengers increased flexibility, then abused by ToCs to do the exact opposite. Northern, I’m looking you, changing many of its SOR Anytime Returns to SHR Anytime Short Returns.

    Special Offers Discussion

For the newspaper offer, I’ve never done it, but I always assumed that it would be acceptable to get “Promise to Pay” ticket from from the TVM at an unmanned station, and then pay (in cash is probably safer) at the first manned ticket office that you pass on your journey. Best have your form...

Jaguar Land Rover threatens to sue National Rail over the usage of "Ranger and Rover" ticket names

There’s no such thing as bad publicity. Jaguar LandRover get their name and pictures of their cars in the newspapers. Railway Ranger & Rover tickets, that are seldom publicised and little known about amongst the travelling public, get some free advertising too. Maybe JLR and the railway industry...

    Annoying television adverts...

The public information advert about the analogue phone line phase out, starring a little old lady with a mobility scooter and personal alarm. She keeps on telling you to contact “the landline provider” without any further information about what that actually is. Does she mean the GPO or...

Best fare offer of last 20 years

Virgin used to allow you to sit in 1st class at weekends if you held an Anytime ticket. I often used this between Warrington and Preston and viewed it as recompense for having to travel on Pacers before and afterwards on my journey from Merseyside to East Lancashire.

    Cumbrian bus service enhancements.

Proposals for new and enhanced services in Cumbria have been announced. Glad to see Ravenglass back on the bus network, after how long? “Cumberland Council has today approved plans to go to market to procure and commission a major expansion of local bus services, backed by £3.5 million in...

    ‘Bluesaver Return’

There were Blue Saver / White Saver days calendar posters displayed at stations. I think that many passengers found the whole thing utterly confusing and seem to remember one of the comedians of the time doing a joke about it on TV. I’m thinking Victoria Wood, or maybe Alexei Sayle.
