    Northern printed timetables

https://coastandlakestraintimetable.co.uk/pick-up-a-copy lists all the stations that are supposed to carry the C,L,D&F booklet. At the last timetable changeover in December 2024, it took nearly a month until Skipton station got a delivery of the up-to-date booklets, which is why I was surprised...

    Northern printed timetables

I haven’t seen any Northern printed timetable leaflets for a long time and assumed that they had been discontinued (other than the excellent Coast, Lakes, Dales and Fells booklet). Some enterprising stations did however provide black and white A4 printouts of the PDFs as a substitute. Anyway...

Glasgow Central to Preston Off Peak DAY Return - valid from Newton to Motherwell?

Yes, that ticket is valid on local ScotRail trains between Newton and Motherwell, but only after 0930. You are right that an additional ticket would be required to leave Newton at 0916.

Future of the Settle to Carlisle, Bentham and Ribble Valley lines

Interesting that this has been brought up. I was just looking at the train times for my nephew, who is planning on doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks walk this summer, travelling from South Yorkshire (Sheffield, Meadowhall or Rotherham) The last two southbound trains of the day are an issue for him...

Examples of unstaffed stations that provide toilet facilities for passengers

Also off the mainline network, on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway there are RADAR key accessible toilets at Irton Road and The Green stations. They used to be available at all times, handy as the National Park toilets at Eskdale Green are closed out of season. But now I believe that they are...

    Glasgow to Bradford/Leeds open return

For the excess fare, traveling off-peak: the off-peak “Any Permitted” single SVS is £73.10, so the excess should surely be less than that. The question is how much “credit” should be deducted from that amount, given that I already hold an Anytime Return SOR “via Appleby” that cost me £74.70. Is...

    Glasgow to Bradford/Leeds open return

So, if you buy an Anytime Return “via Appleby” (SOR £74.70) and on the way back decide to avoid Appleby and also use an Avanti or LNER service, how do you calculate the excess fare? [Glasgow to Leeds singles “Any Permitted” - SVS is £73.10, SOS is £80.70). Just interested how this should be done.

Chesterfield to Chester valid routes please

There is a very reasonably priced Derby to Rhyl Off-peak Day Return (£37.10) that would be valid to Chester via Crewe, or via Chesterfield and Stockport. If travelling via Derby then you would need an extra ticket to cover the Chesterfield to Derby leg, another reasonably priced Off-peak Day...

Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway 2025 timetable gaps

Yes. I recently got an email about this. https://lakedistrictestates.wearegifted.co.uk/railway-engine-driver-taster-experience Seems that, at a minimum, they will have to open the signalbox and Ravenglass cafe, along with supplying a driver and guard for the driver experience trains. Not sure...

Line names that are no longer used.

https://projectmapping.co.uk/Reviews/Resources/West%20Riding%20BR%20map%201972%20.jpg shows some of the line names in Yorkshire that never really took off e.g. Three Rivers, Castervale, Minster.

Trivia: What are the quirkiest railway stations in Britain?

Miteside Halt on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway has an upturned boat hull acting as a waiting shelter.

Britain to raise defence spending. Where should the money be spent?

Those 4 new ballistic missile submarines being built in Barrow - I’d be getting the tape measure out to see if they could be modified to carry French missiles, rather than Tridents from the now untrustworthy USA. The French were smart to develop a truly independent nuclear deterrent, whereas...

    Another incident at Grange-over-Sands 01 March 2025

I was visiting Grange when this happened. Luckily I drove, rather than taking the train. A pair of police cars sped through the town centre, east to west, then a few minutes later west to east. Not sure if they were looking for the van that didn’t stop, or were just confused as to which level...

Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway 2025 timetable gaps

For as long as I can remember, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway has run a daily train service from mid March to the beginning of November. This year however, it looks like that there will be no service on certain Fridays in March, April, May and October...

1970s / 1980s Station Buffet & Bar - Do you remember 'The Gantry'?

The name may not refer to a signal gantry. The shelving above the counter, where glasses are stacked of hung, is known as a bar gantry. Did any station’s bar have an especially impressive ornate one that warranted naming the establishment after it?

    Recycling (bottles etc) discussion

A few years ago Morrisons trialed reverse vending machines for cans and plastic bottles in a few of its supermarkets. You got Morrisons More Points vouchers in return and I set out to on a mission to make my mum a More Points millionaire by collecting all the bottles I could from work, my shared...

Which services might call at Rotherham Gateway station?

Agree 100%. Reopen Masborough for long distance services, only IF they can be persuaded to stop there. Trains have to slow down anyway for the curve, so less of a time penalty if they stop at Masborough over Gateway. The Masborough end of town is much more likely to be redeveloped (Guest &...

    Doncaster Works (Wabtec) to close

Same here with the memories. I first got interested in trains after being taken to the Railex 125 open day as a kid in 1978. Also visited for the 150th anniversary open day in 2003. Looking into it, is seems that lots of the buildings are Grade II listed, so even if it does close, it shouldn’t...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

In addition to the one in County Down already mentioned, another one still exists at Bunners hardware store in Montgomery. I was wondering if something similar could be the solution to the home charging of electric cars on terraced streets with no off-road parking?

Which services might call at Rotherham Gateway station?

I am originally from Rotherham, with family still living there. I can’t imagine this new Rotherham Gateway being a success. Located in a grim industrial area, further from the town centre and bus station than the old Masborough station ever was. How are passengers supposed to get to the new...
