"Trivia" Through stations with extremely few passenger trains which do not call

The only time this passenger was overcarried was at London Bridge - unfortunately in the down direction. 1781453896 They therefore don’t qualify- there needs to be a minimum of one train booked to run through non-stop. 1781454010 Since the object is to find those stations where very few (but...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

E’en Pos’ was the cry of the seller outside the Bristol Hippodrome. Surely they didn’t make a living purely from the sale of papers (particularly towards the end) - were they already on a pension?

Which lines have seen the biggest improvements in passenger numbers and service since BR?

Severn Beach line should be up there. Similarly, although not in itself a “line”, service of Keynsham and Oldfield Park stations has gone up from a handful per day fifty odd years ago to 2tph and on the stoppers I use I would think their usage exceeds that of Bath Spa. Interestingly, and an...

Any prospect of an improved service for Ashley Down?

Since GW’s objection to the TfW plans is that it would interfere with their “anticipated” 2nd tph, that strongly suggests that initially it is the existing Filton shuttle that will be extended.

    Rail usage

To use your own words, that’s ridiculous. All COVID proved is that it’s easier to clean trains when virtually nobody’s using them - in exactly the same way as it proved that journey times by road are eminently shorter and more predictable when hardly anyone ejj ko se is using them.

    Rail usage

As In the younger generation in London aren’t cooling on the idea of car ownership; or public transport isn’t seen by Londoners as something to be endured?

Is Open Access abstractive or does it genuinely plug gaps?

As rail journey times have reduced more journeys have moved out of the category which the low cost airlines feed on (sufficiently long that you basically write off a day / half a day to do it and aren't over-worried exactly when the service runs) and into the category where the journey is just...

    ECML Diversion Routes - Lincoln-Spalding-March-Ely between 1976-1980?

The spread of electrically heated stock would have rendered them increasingly less useful - though I think they staggered on on the odd relief till quite late in their careers.

Borders Railway - 10 years on

Yes - Edinburgh’s geography /geology doesn’t lend itself to inner suburban rail commuting - except along the East-West axis.

£2.5bn Leeds Tram plan delayed after government review

Newcastle just got the go-ahead before the oil crisis changed economics almost for ever (and what was done there needs to have set against it what would have had to have been spent anyway to keep the old network going - a similar story to Liverpool). Not sure what the relative economic state of...

Do Northern passengers pay a two TOC premium

Though anyone who wants to make journey that happens not to be on a main line is probably much better served in the UK (albeit at a price) than in France or some others of our “friends and neighbours”

Hence my earlier query about there having to be a minimum of 1 non-stopper.

Begs the question, if the E200s are going to S Yorks, what’s going to work the 2. No weight restriction nowadays, but length is an issue through Combe Down, I should have thought.

    Rail usage

A line where the importance of day-trip traffic has been recognised for years. Back in the 1970s when it was hanging on for dear life the service was, IIRC, peak hours only on weekdays but probably one DMU working back and forth all day on Saturdays.

Do Northern passengers pay a two TOC premium

Those multi-mode fares that are one of the key ways to get people out of their cars in places where we really need them to. Incidentally what is London’s Travelcard / Oyster but a huge multi mode scheme.

Is Open Access abstractive or does it genuinely plug gaps?

The early German ones (even with large companies behind them) didn’t last long. However, the German IC market is (in theory at least) all run on a commercial basis.
