    Settle–Carlisle Local Services, Pre–May 1970?

The other three survivors are realistically the only ones which a) have a local population of any size immediately at hand and b) aren’t so close to Carlisle as to make a sparse service pointless. Unfortunately the northerners doesn’t have quite the same “pull” for walkers.

"Trivia" Through stations with extremely few passenger trains which do not call

Could be several reasons. That one train might be the only express booked by that route (Caledonian Sleeper via Bathgate comes to mind if it still goes that way). The train in question might be a peak hour extra that can only “find” a path across a couple of junctions if it misses out a couple...

Reopenings - the positive narrative the railway industry needs !

We will of course never know what would have happened had there not been a “minor adjustment” to the financial situation in 2020.

    Network SouthEast 40 Year Anniversary

Were they specifically lost to the NSE image or just because they’d been left to rot for too long?

    Network SouthEast 40 Year Anniversary

It was also an example of how a few “touches” in the right place (lampposts and benches) could quickly give the impression that “something was happening” very quickly (and cheaply), while the real “somethings” were taking their time. The downside was that it quickly eliminated traces of former...

Unusual notes and coins/wages paid in cash discussion

Given the fact that the company trades internationally, all of the back office functions will be required anyway. There’s probably just about enough demand to make it wash its face still. Many travellers will still want a bit of cash on arrival, even if they end up doing everything by card -...

Cemetery buses - is Merseytravel 129 the last survivor?

Is it a condition of operation of the cemetery? Even if not, stopping it is a guarantee of the worst possible publicity imaginable (grieving relatives “unable” to visit grave etc - no matter what the truth actually is)

    Northern Explorer - new ticket?

That “isn’t far off” is the key there. It’s a geographical area “old school” rover. It just so happens that the area concerned is almost entirely n the hands of GWR.

    Pooley Green Level Crossing

Possibly particularly prominent so that any member of the public reporting an incident on the phone doesn’t describe it as “Vicarage Road” (which is apparently the road going over the crossing) - of which I imagine there may well be several.

    Northern Explorer - new ticket?

The other element in the equation is that in purchasing this sort of ticket you’re paying for less faff. Yes - purchasing individual tickets might save me £2.25, but this way I’m free to change my mind at the last minute (even en route) and am not in danger of being accused of boarding a train...

    King Charles III coins

Given the fact that the 5p is probably worth less than the 1/2p was in 1971, even this dinosaur agrees that they wouldn’t really be missed (as long as any rounding happened at final bill level rather than on individual items, where it could add up quite quickly). Obviously electronic...

Which lines have seen the biggest improvements in passenger numbers and service since BR?

Although a lot of that will have been driven by the growth of the airport, rather than purely changes to what the railway offered. 1781511089 No - half hourly with the odd peak hour extra.

Reopenings - the positive narrative the railway industry needs !

I don't think opening lines is seen as a bad thing amongst the public at all - I doubt Boris Johnson would have backed the restoring your railway proposal if he didn't think it would be hugely popular. Don’t know what the reply function’s getting up to! The cynic in me says that BoJo saw...

    King Charles III coins

That and the fact that they are probably now the “go to” for collecting in a jar. 1781507707 The latter are certainly the only ones I’ve come across and as treasurer of a small society I do deal with quite a lot of small change on a weekly basis.

    Potential Double-stack Rail Transport

One of the issues is the diversity of destinations in a country where virtually all journeys are short-haul if not exactly “last mile”.

Reopenings - the positive narrative the railway industry needs !

I would suggest it has much more to do with a) the stress of finding somewhere to park when you get to where you’re going and b) the restriction that driving places on certain activities you might want to indulge in. For family trips, it may well be easier to keep kids entertained on the train...

    Northern Explorer - new ticket?

As frequent posts elsewhere remind us, there is a large cohort of people who are not eligible for any railcard. Although some of them might be, this effectively includes foreign tourists not on some kind of rail pass.

"Trivia" Through stations with extremely few passenger trains which do not call

Apologies, I’d forgotten the sleeper, which allows quite a lot of central lowland stations to qualify.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

What is now rare (though not really anachronistic) is finding either as the default offer at anywhere other than “greasy spoons”.
