Limpley Stoke Bridge Strike (Monday 23/03/2026)

Though that should surely be taken into account on the signs.

Should have Network Southeast when they electrified the Hastings line, also electrified other lines?

OLE into the bay at Basingstoke but with a short extension of 3rd rail to allow the changeover for through trains to be on the fly and avoid having to put up knitting over the entire station.

Should have Network Southeast when they electrified the Hastings line, also electrified other lines?

New batch of 442-clones split between a third rail version and a DMU. 10 cars to Salisbury with the DMU leading and continuing on to Exeter?

Should have Network Southeast when they electrified the Hastings line, also electrified other lines?

That’s exactly my point - especially if existing stock could have been used. However, there woukd only have been surplus stock due to the downturn, which needed not to happen to continue the growth which might have triggered electrification. A bit of a Catch 22.

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

It depends where and what the alternatives are.

Should have Network Southeast when they electrified the Hastings line, also electrified other lines?

Hastings electrification was triggered by the need to replace life-expired stock, which in turn required a lot of engineering work to single the tunnels. Not electrifying would have needed new-build stock, whereas electrifying meant surplus emus could be used. Had the early 90s downturn not...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

Not just here. One of Luebeck’s city centre car parks involves driving round the cellars of the mediaeval buildings lost in air raids. It’s an interesting experience - but a terrible car-park.

Limpley Stoke Bridge Strike (Monday 23/03/2026)

If it’s on the vehicle then it should be increased - if it’s on the bridge it should be decreased - though the mere fact that that creates a “gap” of up to 6 inches may in itself encourage risk taking.

222 contract for Scotrail: could Scotrail have procured new trains instead?

At last- an operator has the sense to realise that transitions are rarely seamless!

    Rail usage

The real boom in leisure travel is surely medium distance days / evenings out, for which West Midlands - Oxenholme is really stretching it a bit (especially in the winter months).

Brighton mainline this weekend, 21/22 March

Viewed the other way round, the crowds trying to use a limited number of RRBs might be more manageable. Buses don’t grow on trees.

You know you’re getting older when……

Don’t have a problem with “learners” as it is what they are supposed to be doing, after all. “Students” should for the most part, be engaged in independent study, with someone there to guide them when the student needs it. I know universities have lectures and seminars but, at least in my day...

Find Hotels on National Rail Journey Planner

Adverts on a station platform don’t “muscle in” on something you’re trying to do (often in a hurry). This (and adverts on departure screens - which I would extend to include any information that isn’t immediately pertinent to departures of trains) does.

Trivia: Successive stations with different opening dates.

OK - though I think that the Elizabeth line is stretching it a bit with there being no way the route being followed could pass through the station "as it was" before the EL opened. It does really surprise me, however, that no two GW stations between Paddington and Reading were opened...

Where are one and two coach loco hauled trains still running?

In similar vein was the “Wiesbaden City” of the late 1980s. A two coach (1 first, 1 second) IC train (complete with supplement) with a 141 at each end that ran solely between Mainz and Wiesbaden so that Hessen’s state capital didn’t suffer the indignity of being the only state capital without UC...

    Thoughts on the Trump presidency

Apparently the Nuremberg Rallies were quite entertaining as well.

Blue badge parking on one side of a station?

Yes - having a blue badge pick up area where short term parking was permitted - to allow a driver to leave their vehicle to meet someone off the train would be useful.
