    Annoying television adverts...

They can pronounce it however they like but “It is pronounced” the way people pronounce it. A name is what other people use to call you…. As long as the people pronouncing it don’t in their turn insist that their way is the only way.

Have any parties pledged to re-privatise the railways?

Indeed - virtually every transition day has seen things going wrong - in some cases spectacularly so.

Wider service possibilities following the Portishead reopening?

Back when they ran the specials to launch the project (2012?) I’m fairly certain that was the idea. I’d have thought extending the Avonmouth terminators to Parkway via Henbury and the Abbey Wood terminators to Avonmouth via Henbury would open up even more options, but it’s all academic anyway.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Prior to its purchase by Tesco (I think), the Scottish supermarket chain of Wm. Low kept the usage alive (so until 1984)

How could bus and railway stations be better integrated going forward?

Tyne and Wear did “do this” from the opening of the Metro till bus de-regulation…

How could bus and railway stations be better integrated going forward?

I’ll raise you Lueneburg - the bus station is next to the railway station, which is on the eastern edge of the town centre. Buses from the east call at the bus station (of course) but actually terminate in the town centre; those from other directions mostly do town centre first - though I don’t...

Is Transport for Wales nationalist? Could its operations be redistributed?

Being pedantic, it shares common roots with those three languages. What is remarkable about the development of the English language is the almost complete eradication of its Romano-British predecessor (other than place names and re-imports via other routes).

    Thoughts on the Trump presidency

    GWR Bristol - Oxford service

Unless there’s some big event on in Oxford that week, it does beg the question as to why there is suddenly a Bristol - Oxford service for that week and no other. Combining 2 existing part services during engineering work is one thing - creating a service that doesn’t exist (and isn’t a...

    DB CLASS 218 locomotives.

I believe the loco change will be at Plochingen. (Presumably there’s too much digging going on at Stuttgart!)

    Thoughts on the Trump presidency

Leaving clothing between the arm and the cuff? 1774544557 How about fixed terms (except where disqualified by criminal conviction)? One third of each board appointed by POTUS, one third by Congress and one third by the Senate.

Why did the South Eastern Division not get Mk3 stock in the 1980s?

Somewhere in the country will always have “Britain’s Oldest Trains” - it’s just a fact of life. What was unfortunate for the SE division was that the point at which it became “next in the queue” (others can argue whether other areas of the country were actually in greater need), the chill winds...

Portishead Approved - Construction Updates Thread - No speculation

So - do we wait for an as yet indeterminate time for new trains to be ordered, then another as yet indeterminate period while people scratch their heads while trying to get them to actually work or do we get on with doing what is practical (and within the constrained budget) now?

Is Transport for Wales nationalist? Could its operations be redistributed?

Like this you mean - the station being Krzewina Zgorzekecka in Poland - served exclusively by German trains and basically there to give the German town of Ostritz a railway station. The station name is given in Polish and German - all other signs are in Polish and English only.

By 2028 there’s a vague chance there might actually be some stock available to run the service!

What if CrossCountry could restore the services

For very similar reasons to why most of the former cross-London services were short-lived. Add to that the fact that there are probably even fewer paths available than 30 years ago.

Yes - unfortunately the first casualty seems to be clear messaging /announcements to the travelling public.
