Longest wait from amber light at level crossing to train? Why does it seem to take so long?

Kildwick on the keighley - Skipton line can leave you waiting a while. Useful when you are going to the hospital. I got held up while my wife was driving me to A+E with a burst appendix. She turned round and we went via steeton.

Minor things on trains which irritate you

I seem to remember the reason they went for bimodes on the east coast was because of the 9 minutes for a loco change at edinburgh for trains going further north. Sure that was documented in a Roger Ford article in modern railways. So that decision meant we now have trains dragging round...

Axle counters dont:- Detect broken rails Detect metal obstructions, notably wreckage from a train smash which occured on the other track. Dont detect track curcuit clips. Dont need lines and lines of computer code and shedloads of configuration all input by humans so liable to wrong side failure...

Disruption to services - Storm Dudley & Storm Eunice

One factor which may affect what damage occurs is wind direction. We had a storm earlier this year and the wind came from the north east, not the usual south west. Loads of trees went. Previoys SW gales had weeded out trees that were vulnerable to wind from that direction. But there had not been...

Good Day Walks with a train back to the starting point.

most is the old tote road from when they built the tunnel. There are the spoil heaps which are covered in wild strawberries if you go at the right time. bit of a struggle from cowgill up to the station tho.

A Tube train can make its station call within 20 seconds at a National Rail station. Why is the dispatch procedure of some other trains so long?

dwell times could be reduced if the driver opens the doors. He knows how long his train is and has stopped at the correct stop mark. So he can start the door opening sequence as the train drops the last few MPH. If its safe on the Berlin S-Bahn, it would be safe here. And if DOO trains can...

What would happen if a major section of road suddenly became impassable?

There was a nasty accident on the M42 when a truck went into a bridge support at the A444 junction. The motorway was closed for a while for that. They started encasing the bottom of bridge supports in concrete after that.
