1978 timetable there were 2 Aberdeen - KX services, plus a Aberdeen - York, and the sleepers. The extra services were added in 'marginal time' in BR days once they had east coast HST's. Trips north of made by trains that arrived in Edinburgh too late to make a return journey south. Also saved...

(What if) TFL money saving ideas

Curtail Bakerloo at Queens park. There is a decent national rail service northwards Can night trains and buses. What other English city has night public transport? Kids pay. If you live more than 3 miles from school you get free transport. Everyone else pays. Why is London any different...

(What if) TFL money saving ideas

Are there any bus routes that parallel rail routes. Surely room for cuts there? I think underground lines outside greater London already attract subsidy from the respective county councils. Whether that is a realistic amount I dont know. But if they wont pay enough to cover costs, then curtail...

Historic - when were route numbers first used?

In the area that interests me (round Leeds) West Yorkshire Road Car Co (WYRCC) and Leeds City Transport started with route numbers for buses in the mid 1930's. WYRCC has route numbers for most routes in their 1936 timetable. But who were the first to display route numbers on buses? UK and...

    Manchester-Clitheroe services...why never beyond?

or send 2 unis to Clitheroe, detach one to go to Ribblehead, the other goes back to Manc. On return, the ribblehead goes on to Manc and there is a spare unit at Clinteroe to for the next service to Ribblehead. So you need 1 unit and 1 crew.

Collision and derailment near Salisbury (Fisherton Tunnel) 31/10/21

Sadly the report is silent about that. There was also concern about sliding while braking on contaminated rail when disk brakes first came in. The goo gets rolled onto the rail head and also onto the wheels causing a loss of adhesion. This doesnt happen with tread brakes as the brake cleans...

    Wacky formations

There was concern that dragging the cl43 a lot would lead to commutator glazing (whatever that is) so the train was configured for the cl43 to give traction power.

    Manchester-Clitheroe services...why never beyond?

Crossover came out at settle stn when they closed the signal box in the 80's. In fact i dont remember settle box ever being manned. A shuttle from the clitheroe direction would have to reverse at settle jct or blea moor. Unless they remoddeled hellifield so it could reverse trains from the east.
