Seat layout map for East Coast stock

Does anyone know were I can find a seat layout map for East Coast coaching stock ? My wife and I are going up to Aberdeen and I phoned up (and paid an extra 10%.....) so I could select the Duo seats in the First class, i.e. the opposed singles. We've got L51AN/53AN one way and 31AN/33AN the...

When did Horwich works foundry finally cease operations ?

As far as I've been able to ascertain Horwich works was in use to manufacture rolling stock until 1984, but then continued as a foundry and spring shop only. The site was sold to the Parkfield group in 1988. The rail connection was removed the following year (1989), and it`s in use as an...

Daetails of Mardyke Belton Park Railway locomotive "Moondial Express"

Apologies if this is the wrong section, but whilst at Belton House (nr Grantham) my wife and I took a trip on the minature railway, it was a bit cramped for "grown ups" but it was a good laugh ! We were hauled by Moondial Express, a 7.25" gauge Mardyke locomotive. Has anybody got any details...

River flooding temporay station, an earlier one at Over (Gloucs) in Feb 1990

With reference to the recent station at Workington, built due to flooding, my Railway Magazine of April 1990 (p225) reports the building of a temporary station at Over, 2 miles west of Gloucester. Apparently it was only in use from the 6th of Feb to the 21st and it was due to safety concerns...

Does anyone know any details of the Argentinian (TBA) 3rd rail EMUs ?

My wife and I have just come back from a holiday in South America and whilst in Buenos Aires we went to Tigre for the day, Tigre is very nice by the way ! We took the TBA train from Buenos Aires Retiro and the stock was a 5 car 3rd rail EMU. Does anyone know any details of these units ...

More and more onerous conditions for Thomas days

I have been more and more frustrated as I read about the more and more onerous conditions that HIT Entertainment put on the Heritage railways that run Thomas and Friends events. As I understand it HIT entertainment are the rights holder to Thomas the Tank Engine since Rev Awdry`s family sold out...

C158s, the air conditioning is useless, and so is the heating !

I think everyone is aware of how bad the air conditioning is on C158s (I can remember travelling to Cleethorpes with my wife in the stifling sweaty heat and she swore she`d never travel by train again....) but the heating isn`t much better either. The unit I used to travel from Leeds to...

Does anyone know when the LEV1 prototype was withdrawn ?

I have been bought Colin Marsden`s book on Second Generation DMUs for Xmas, but it doesn`t say when the LEV1 prototype railbus was actually withdrawn. Does anyone know this information ? Also was the LEV1 just the earlier unpowered test chassis unit, but fitted with an engine and transmssion ?

Dead fares manual link published in the Bradshaw Mitchell timetable

I buy all the Bradshaw Mitchell (Middleton Press) timetables and I think they`re great, but there`s a link given to the National Rail fares manual that doesn`t work : www.nationalrail.co.uk/passenger_services/manual.html Am I doing something wrong ?

Does anyone know where I can find a list of new stations and their opening dates ?

I`m trying to keep my Cobbs Historical Rail Atlas up to date. Is there a website which lists all newly opened stations with their opening dates ? Even better where exactly they are !

History teaches us nothing`s new, even annoying music on public transport..

Personally I find the playing of loud personal stereos on trains to be bleedin` annoying (though my wife hates it even more), but I`ve just been reading an article in Railway Magazine reporting on Noise Abatement legislation on the trains. It`s background to an article about the increase in...

Railway magazines, how unbiased are they ?

How unbiased are railway magazines these days ? How often do they say anything really controversial ? Hardly ever. A cynic like myself would say this is because they`re s**t scared of being blackballed by the TOCs or Network rail. As an example I can remember writing a letter to a certain...

    91 016 / 91 116

Although I used to be a spotter when I was a kid I don`t "spot" anymore, though I do keep a record of which rolling stock I`ve been on, where it went, if it was on time and how full the service was. The thing is, I`ve been hauled by all the class 91s on the ECML (most 2 or 3 times or more)...

More seats equals less leg room.......

Is it just my imagination, or has the leg room in class 158s reduced ? I know that many rail companies add extra seats (by reducing the leg room, cheeky gits.....) but I didn`t think the Northern Rail 158s had been so afflicted. I`m 6ft, with fairly long legs, but I find the arline seats very...

When was Dore station singled, and Fletton Junction taken out of use ?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section but I like to keep my Cobb`s Rail Atlas up to date and I need to know when the line from Fletton Junction to the fly ash pits was actually closed, and when Dore station was singled. Incidentally the Cobb`s rail atlas is a virtuoso work. The only...
