    Films that feature the railways

GWS Didcot also appeared in an Inspector Morse episode when Morse and Lewis followed an American Tourist who they were a bit suspicious of. It turned out he wasn't the villain just a railway enthusiast. Another crime drama which featured railways in a few episodes was S4C Y Gwyll / Hinterland...

Trivia: National Rail stations that contain restaurants within station premises

A very good question. McD seems to consider themselves restaurants. I don't want to offend but if they are restaurants well the bar is set very low.

    Films that feature the railways

This evening I have just finished watching a good 1939 drama "Sons of the Sea" which popped up on Amazon Prime. Never heard of the film before which stars well known actor of the period Leslie Banks. Filmed in the summer of 1939 in colour it is a murder mystery / spy drama. It uses...

Why don’t heritage railways make an effort to “sell” diesel traction?

I think the problems with the A3 predate social media. Over hyped and I think for some of us enthusiasts we put a few miles in between it and us these days I know I do. Strange really as the first railtour I did back in 1968 as a child was behind her. Some of us know there are more interesting...

Why don’t heritage railways make an effort to “sell” diesel traction?

Yes quite - that would prove a great attraction.

Why don’t heritage railways make an effort to “sell” diesel traction?

It really does belong on a GW branch line rather than being cooped up in Didcot! Like to see it at Llangollen, Bodmin and South Devon as well. Would prove to be a great attraction for any railway if it did the rounds!

    Films that feature the railways

As this now seems to have evolved into TV series as well as films a recent one from this year's Christmas Specials Looe Branch and Looe Station feature on Beyond Paradise 2025 Christmas Special. Previously, I think in the 2024 series, Buckfastleigh and South Devon Railway appeared when...

    Films that feature the railways

Last night I decided to watch Battle of the Bulge on ITV player. It is years since I last saw this film. There is a railway section in this. A train with a couple of heavy guns are hurried to the US forces. Now it is supposed to be the Ardennes but it was apparently filmed in Spain as the...

North West Frontier - starring Kenneth More set in India. Great film - crossing the partially blown up bridge was very well filmed. Unstoppable 2010 - which is supposed to have been inspired by real eventsin the USA. - Actually saw this at the cinema which was unusual for me as I don't go. But...

Quirky or quaint practices on buses in the past

Quite a few companies ran a parcels service. Western National did. Back in the day when I stataying on holiday in an outlying village I had gone into Exeter and bought something bulky which I didn't want to carry around as I was going off somewhere else for the rest of the day so I used the...

Quirky or quaint practices on buses in the past

Delivering newspapers to outlying newsagents and delivery people. Between 1978 and 1982 i did a lot of journies on routes out of Exeter and Western National Devon General would often take bundles of the afternoon Exeter Express and Echo newspaper out on the afternoon rural departures and stop...

    How Viable are Preserved Railways?

Some lines do seem to be offering additional experiences I did a very enjoyable brake van trip over the South Devon Railway in May 2024. Whole different view and experience than being in a carraige. A couple of years earlier I went from Llangollen to Berwyn in a mineral wagon - which had been...

South Devon Railway VS Dartmouth Steam Railway

The SDR have special experiences such as the goods train guards van ride where one can on selected dates ride in either a Toad or a Shark brake van. I did that in 2024 - it was very good. They are also running a Pullman Car with dining on selected dates - though not done that as when I was in...

    Heritage Railway Season Tickets

That is full line trips there isn't a way of recording part journeys between intermediate stations. Life Members of FRS still theoretically are unlimited as are members of WHRS on the respective lines. I seem to recall that shortly before Covid it was discovered that owners of some local...
