What heritage/preserved railways have you visited?

This is my list broken down by categories. The locations with a year after them I have only visited once. For some lines I would say I was a regular at least once if not several times a year visitor particularly some of those in Wales and West Country. Standard Gauge Bluebell Railway...

What is one heritage railway or railway attraction you want to visit and have not yet?

Romney Hythe and Dymchurch - but its the wrong side of London and not an area I go to for holidays. Always preferring West Country and Wales and have ticked off most of the railways in those areas quite often with repeat visits. Wouldn't also mind a revisit to the Bluebell Railway only...

    Brake van trips

One of the trains operating at the Llangollen Railway Branch Line Gala this weekend was a brakevan special - but they did also have their four wheel carraige in the rake of vans which comprised toads, shark and another van. Seemed very cosy and well filled so i stayed on the conventional train...

    Potential Oswestry Branch Railway Restoration

Isn't it about time the whole road was upgraded? I drive that way a number of times each year and yes the roundabouts cause sizeable jams at certain times of day. The road as it stands just does not have the capacity. If it was upgraded might that not then provide the opportunity to resolve...

    Peco to close Pecorama

The attractions were set up as an adjunct to the factory in the early 1970s it was never primarily set up as a tourist atraction. I reacall my parents taking me to Peco's original shop and factory which used to be in Station Road (now renamed Harbour Road), Seaton which was in town centre...

Why don’t heritage railways make an effort to “sell” diesel traction?

I have noticed similar good loading at Llangollen on DMU days - the railcars are popular with "joe public" because of the novelty of the forward and trailing views - something we are now deprived of on the main network. Even seen parts of DMUs booked for coach parties - so excursions...

    Potential Oswestry Branch Railway Restoration

I use that road quite a few times each year and seem to recall when originally built the route was going to be dual carriageway but was cut back due to cost which was certainly a false economy. It would have certainly benefitted from grade separated junctions rather than the roundabouts which...

    Potential Oswestry Branch Railway Restoration

Which begs the question what is the point of operating a short heritage railway trapped between two level crossings which can't be used? I have only visited the Cambrian Line twice in 2024 and 2025 mainly because I tend to prefer longer lines and in the area Welshpool & Llanfair or Llangollen...

Manual gate level crossings and level crossing keepers jobs.

Unfortunately back in 2017 in this remote location the crossing keeper was attacked - I can't recall any news of the culprits being apprehended or if there was any follow up - but it was the subject of this Rail Forums...

    Current or future fuel issues

5% would put in in line with that charged on domestic fuel if we had a rate of 5% VAT on all fuels things could be smoothed out by transferring it to general taxation. The money would still be coming in from duty. Our fuel is well over taxed anyway. I noticed report the other day people in...

    Current or future fuel issues

The other solution would be to reduce VAT and fuel duty. Some commentators have pointed out that whilst the base price of oil rises the government receives added revenue from VAT and fuel duty. Apparently quite a few countries are now reported to have reduced VAT on fuel to keep prices down...

The term "Idlers" used on historical rail warning signs.

There is a slight problem with that sign particularly is if the the workman has travelled to work by train - at what point might he cease to be a passenger? :D

    Current or future fuel issues

I must admit it is something that is forming in the back of my mind as I have a few trips planned in the next few months to Cornwall / Devon / Wales - i can cope with it being expensive to a point but rationing schemes and big queues on forecourts whilst people panic buy is a different matter...

    Passenger removal

No I was just raising the point that poor behaviour in general is being medicalised rather than dealt with on other ways. I recall an interviewer on the Today programme some years ago putting that to someone. Fact is poor behaviour whether there is medical or lack of discipline behind it make...

    Passenger removal

Is this also similar to the naughty child problem? Now bad juvenile behaviour is medicalised rather than punished (sometimes physically) and suggestion of punishment is now frowned upon by some - but others (including myself) see it as part of societal decline through ill dicipline.

    Passenger removal

Well first time I have ever seen something like this. Back in my day when I was their age I would probably still have had an adult with me and was brought up to understand that you had to buy a ticket and if you couldn't afford it well that was it you couldn't go! - I guess things have moved on...

    Passenger removal

I observed a strange incident on a Penzance to Plymouth train a couple of years ago. Train stops at Menheniot and two young lads board aged around 12. Conductor comes around and asks where they are going to. They answered London and told him they had no money and couldn't buy a ticket...

    Passenger removal

I can't see why it should as it provides evidence to back up the claim if there is any doubt. 1774437361 Using Merseyrail quite a lot one encounters the Carlisle people quite a bit - but personally I have not had any problems with them. I will concede they do have a bit of a reputation as...

    Passenger removal

Whilst I am 100% in favour of stopping those intoxicated to the extent that the cause unpleasant travelling for others there needs to be a way in some situations of proving intoxication or non intoxication. I recall an incident reported in the Merseyside press of someone who was denied travel on...

Dealing with out-of-course events in isolated parts of the network before radios

I was on a Barnstaple to Exeter train around 1980 sat in the front of a first generation DMU. A sheep had got on the line somewhere around Umberleigh. Stood in the four foot staring down the train, driver braked hard and kept his had on the horn but the inevitable happened in it went under...
