    Most boring preserved railway?

I only returned to long distance rail travelling in autumn 2021 almost 40 years after passing my driving test! It had been the odd branch line and heritage railway in the intervening years. Anyway last September I decided to join the Branch Line Society Wirral Squirrel Railtour. I planned to...

Welsh Highland Railway Centenary Weekend July 30/31

I have been planning to go to this event for some time and have accommodation booked. Tickets only went on sale about 10 days ago priced at £60 for a day rover (20% discount for FW / WHR members) + £2 handling. I must say the price did seem a tad on the high side compared to what has been...

How could capacity be increased on the Looe Valley Line

Looking at Google Earth suggests it could be a solution - there is a signal cabinet and radio mast which would have to be moved.

How could capacity be increased on the Looe Valley Line

With the benefit of hindsight one of the biggest mistakes made when goods traffic was withdrawn was not to extend the line closer to the Looe River bridge. (For those that don't know Looe Goods Yard and Quay line lay beyond the station. It would have made the line much more passenger friendly...

Secret Army (BBC) - GWR Signal Box / Signal

After many years I am just re-watching series 1 of the BBC wartime drama "Secret Army", the one which resulted in the spin off comedy "Allo Allo" Set and partly filmed in Belgium and according to IMDB also filmed around Norfolk in UK and I am sure I read somewhere in the past some scenes were...

Dartmouth Steam Railway trains "not calling at intermediate stations this year".

That is what I mean it is still a commercial operation. Whilst PRNGRT may own it and be a registered charity the profits are kept within the entity of the organisation for the benefit of the railway and its owner. It is still primarily a commercial undertaking which mainly employs paid staff.

Dartmouth Steam Railway trains "not calling at intermediate stations this year".

Dart Valley Railway Ltd was established in the 1960s with the aim of being a commercial operation which was supported by the Dart Valley Railway Association. Things didn't work out for the Buckfastleigh line as the A38 improvements truncated the line and terminal facilities at Totnes were...

    Trivia: Fictional Railways in Media

Thanks - not quite so far fetched as I presumed. I had been thinking more along the lines of a steam turbine!

    Trivia: Fictional Railways in Media

I am still trying to work out how the nuclear powered airliner "Fireflash" functioned or even got of the ground. :D

    Most boring preserved railway?

School trips are run for a variety of reasons supporting learning, rewarding good behaviour, end of term treat, independence training. Obviously teachers can build their interests into their trips. I taught History and Geography (and ICT). ICT offered few opportunities for field trips though I...

Northern 'names and shames' schools with high numbers of fare dodging pupils

That was my experience at school generally only difference was there was no bar on VI form pupils driving to school if they had passed their test, a handful did. Can't quite see why your old head frowned upon motorised transport as it wasn't much different to riding to school on bicycle.

Northern 'names and shames' schools with high numbers of fare dodging pupils

Some schools do exert influence over pupils out of school time. Those schools are the ones with high standards which often feature each September when little Jimmy or Jemima get sent home for not conforming to uniform standards and teh sad face reports start appearing in the local rags and...

Northern 'names and shames' schools with high numbers of fare dodging pupils

Northern 'names and shames' schools with high numbers of fare dodging pupils

Everyone appears to want everything for free or subsidised by the state. Someone has to pick up the tab. If people do not want to make some contribution to their children's education the answer is simple avoid having children. Children are a financial commitment and an expensive one at that...
