LNER strike day services: Who operates them?

Could it be that some people just do not agree with strikes and continue to work. For a period of time in my teaching career I was a member of the NUT. I never voted for strike or industrial action nor did I participate in it as I found it morally wrong to disadvantage pupils or their parents...

The Fat Controller - Watercress Line goes pc?

It appears that only a few months ago the local Alton Herald was reporting on a memorial service to be held commemorating one of their volunteers who passed away an 2020. This was under the heading "Life of Watercress Line’s ‘Fat Controller’ to be celebrated at memorial service"...

The Fat Controller - Watercress Line goes pc?

I don't think anyone is offended by using Sir Topham Hatt the names are interchangeable it is the fact that someone there is effectively policing /enforcing the change from Fat Controller to Sir Topham Hatt which is the issue. I am of the generation that always tended to know him as The Fat...

Derailment at Kirkby (Merseyside) - 13/03/2021

Thanks, I see. I suppose if more funds had been available the bridge and consequently the platform could have been modified? John

The Fat Controller - Watercress Line goes pc?

People perceive it as a change to their "normal"? I can't see how using the term fat controller marginalizes anyone. I am on the large side - do I get offended if someone calls me fat? No, of course not just as I wouldn't expect someone who was thin being called thin. We come in all shapes and...

The Fat Controller - Watercress Line goes pc?

I see what you are getting at but is it not the case than a significant number of people in the UK are small "c" conservatives who are resistant to change and see change as a something of a threat? Is there anything wrong with that this crosses the party political divide. It is more of a age...

The Fat Controller - Watercress Line goes pc?

Yes but looking at the posting dates of the original story Birmingham Mail apparently posted about 5 hours earlier and Birmingham Mail were quoting the Sun, thus I wonder if it appeared in the other News International paper - The Times? I don't have a Times sub thus can't check perhaps someone...

The Fat Controller - Watercress Line goes pc?

For those that thought this was the Daily Mail having one of their rants Googling through this story's occurrence it appears to have appeared in The Birmingham Mail and Sun some hours before the Mail picked it up.

Someone was clearly upset. Out of curiosity I just thought I would check out to see if anything had made Trip Advisor - which it has not. However I did note a complaint made earlier this month from a visitor who was prevented from visiting the gift shop by a rude member of staff because they...

The Fat Controller - Watercress Line goes pc?

The thing is though from what I recall in The Railway Series of books the term fat was never used as a term of insult. In at least two books "Small Railway Engines" and "Duke the Lost Engine" if I recall correctly there is a Fat Clergyman and a Thin Clergyman the artwork very obviously was...

Derailment at Kirkby (Merseyside) - 13/03/2021

In the early days some railtours and diversionary workings used the loop. Not sure when it was lifted though. Until recently the other platform at Ormskirk had become something of a jungle with the still extant building becoming almost invisible!

The Fat Controller - Watercress Line goes pc?

Okay I spotted in the DM which I acknowledge is not everybody's chosen news media outlet but it may well appear in other news papers. It is a fact that constantly challenging norms is offensive / threatening to some. There are ways that change can be brought about but one has to question...

Derailment at Kirkby (Merseyside) - 13/03/2021

What I always thought strange at Ormskirk was the way that the former electrified bay platform was not retained for the EMUs with the diesels using the main platform face to effect cross platform interchange. Then the bridge could still have been dispensed with. But if I recall correctly the bay...

So have I but I am not offended. But accepting it is the US sensitivities that the change is pandering to one would not expect UK staff or volunteers to be so officious. That is the issue here. I imagine someone is now going to tell me the current franchise holder will deliberately send spies...

Thanks missed the CCTV bit so perhaps it was someone who was privvy to this? On subject of CCTV it was interesting just how quickly the Kirkby station CCTV images of the collision appeared on YouTube and there were suggestions that this was filmed off a monitor. Wonder if any action was taken...

Just spotted a story on the Daily Mail web site concerning a family being told they can't call the Fat Controller the Fat Controller it has to be Sir Topham Hatt! I seem to recall on a Merseyside Railway FB group claiming the driver had exited the cab into the passenger area before the impact as has been confirmed by RAIB. Thus presumably someone saw it from within unless they just picked up on it afterwards?

New film: "The Railway Children Return".

They were probably children in 1970! :D Perhaps it is not connecting with the younger generation but appealing out of nostalgia reasons to those of us of a certain generation. I don't go to cinemas, but will make a point of getting a copy on DVD to see how it compares.

Trivia: Railway Infrastructure (e.g. buildings) that was built but never used

This morning I used Moorfields Station in Liverpool. Now whilst of course it is fully used its design was intended to link in with scrapped plans for the Liverpool City Council "pavements in the sky" scheme of walkways above the traffic. Various bits of this system were built in the 1970s but...
