Northern 'names and shames' schools with high numbers of fare dodging pupils

I would disagree with that. Naming and shaming schools works wonders - Ofsted do it all the time and are often criticized by some for it. The last thing a school wants is naming and shaming. If Ofsted see schools named and shamed in the media for significant fare evasion that will start to...

    Most boring preserved railway?

What I think this thread shows is that there are probably no railways out there that do not interest any members of the forum. People have different criteria by which they judge a railway to be boring - it is very much a personal judgement and there is no agreement as to which lines actually are...

    Security alert at Blackpool North

Thanks for explaining that. I can see now why the forgotten case I saw on Avanti didn't attract quite so much attention.

    Security alert at Blackpool North

This is what I was trying to get at - who makes the judgement call that something is suspicious? With all the rubbish thrown onto the railway estate in urban areas there could be all sorts of potential devices hiding in plain sight amongst the rubbish. Besides what about lost / abandoned...

Family left stranded in Croston after being sold tickets for a train that didn’t exist

Does it not show up as a booking fee? I have never used Trainline only TOC sites. its a bit like hotel booking sites. A few years ago a friend and I stayed at the same hotel. On checking out he enquired why his bill was £5.00 more. The receptionist informed him he hadn't used the hotel's own...

Family left stranded in Croston after being sold tickets for a train that didn’t exist

That appears to account for how they obtained the tickets. Surprised though they booked through Trainline they charge commission whereas booking with a TOC does not.

    Most boring preserved railway?

Llecwedd Slate Caverns and the former Gloddfa Ganol used to be big tourist attractions and buses did link them to the FR station. Unfortunately Gloddfa Ganol went back to just being a working quarry when it changed hands with no visitors allowed. Llechwedd still operates but is now very into...

Family left stranded in Croston after being sold tickets for a train that didn’t exist

True but I would consider it risky if I was in his shoes. Though I would have no problem being able to afford hotel accommodation should I myself become marooned someone either across water or at some far flung outpost of the rail network - my anxiety would switch to "What happens if all the...

    Security alert at Blackpool North

Okay fair enough if they were misinterpreted but generally laces look like laces and wires look like wires unless there are trendy trainers. But was the bomb squad + robot summoned by the police who had not taken a good look before doing so? Once on the scene they probably might have just...

Family left stranded in Croston after being sold tickets for a train that didn’t exist

The trouble is today - so many appear to wish to be protected from every eventuality rather than accept any responsibility. If planning any trip whether you are a transport enthusiast or not you need to accept some responsibility and be aware that things may go wrong. When planning trips I am...

Can a ticket clerk give permission to board train without ticket

is it not Taking Pecunary Advantage? I recall seeing a cases reported in the paper years ago with someone eating a meal in a restaurant ending up before magistrates for non payment and similarly for non paying taxi drivers. I quite distinctly recall the term being used as "taking pecunary...

Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society travel concessions

The Ffestiniog / Welsh Highland ask members not to use them on busy trains but as far as I know they don't stop you. On the odd occasion I have turned up in the summer school holidays I have not had any problems - but I usually aim for the first train when I go there or most lines for that...

Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society travel concessions

I am an FR Life Member and used to get free travel on the TR. But over the past 10 years or so I found myself visiting the TR at least once a year and decided after having several holidays cancelled in 2020 to donate some of my unspent holiday funds to the TRPS by taking out life membership...

    Security alert at Blackpool North

The only problem here is in doing so we are letting the evil people who do occasionally cause explosions are winning as they know how cautious people are becoming. Thus they can cause mayhem without even trying, and hyper caution with litter or just abandoned / lost property is a spin off. I...

    Security alert at Blackpool North

I can appreciate the need to be cautious - but I am sure it could have been investigated that without the need for shutting everything down as from what was visible from the small images posted here it did look something like what it was a carrier bag! One only has to travel on the train...

    Security alert at Blackpool North

I wonder how many thousands of pounds that cost to sort out? I am sorry the mind boggles. So one could throw a sports bag on to a railway track and it brings everything to a stop. Ties up the the emergency services and the bomb disposal people? Incredible. Lost for further words.

    Most boring preserved railway?

Oh dear the current tour is but a shadow of the former Geevor experience! That involved squeezing into a very small cage and then plummeting down Victory shaft. There was a lot of narrow gauge down there too! One even was taken for a ride. If you want to see what the real Geevor was like take...

    Most boring preserved railway?

Sorry the Dart Valley Railway Ltd (which trades at the Dartmouth Steam Railway and Riverboat Company) has owned the pleasure steamer operation out of Dartmouth for quite a few years as well as the bus service which completes the round robin. South Devon do operate a vintage bus from time to...

    Most boring preserved railway?

Until Covid Dart Valley Railway paid a good dividend to shareholders. Back in the 1970s my father bought me £100 worth of DVR plc shares. Once they had disposed of the loss making Buckfastleigh line the dividends started to come in I think the last one I had was £30. That £100 my father treated...

    Secrets Of The London Underground.

During steam days. Apparently the supports in a recess of the tunnel wall are still there. A Merseyrail employee posted some photos on a FB group a year or two ago taken when maintenance work was in progress. This period engraving shows River Cabin https://images.app.goo.gl/udtLdEKq9NPX5FtD6
