Wye Valley Railway (Greenway) Revisited - June 2022

Thank you for that suggestion. That sounds quite plausible. There are actually two of those posts and they are each side of where the quarry area has been closed off by those freight containers.

    Most boring preserved railway?

Since 2014 have visited the VoR several times, most recently just over a month ago. Prior to that my visits were in BR days, I went there for the final BR operating day in 1988. The current owners have invested a lot in the business which unlike many heritage lines uses mainly employed staff...

    Secrets Of The London Underground.

The former Mersey Railway Signal Box located in the middle of the Mersey Railway Tunnel was known as River Cabin.

Great British Railways - Competition for new location of GBR Headquarters

What about Swindon? I saw something a while back that suggested that they were touting for the honour of hosting GBR. The old LMS / LNE bias which developed in 1948 continues! :D

Wye Valley Railway (Greenway) Revisited - June 2022

This time last year I walked part of the then newly opened Wye Valley Greenway which has been constructed along the former GWR Wye Valley Railway from Chepstow to Wireworks Branch Junction and then for the final half mile or so along the former Tintern Wireworks Branch into Tintern Village...

Moments when preserved railways, with a little bit of imagination, possibly capture the real thing…

Was out and about in Great Western land last week and have three images which I think really captured the period spirit. The image at Broadway had to be cropped a bit to remove the toilet door which had a Covid era hand sanitizer mounted on the wall. But I can't see any anachronisms in these images.

Sad state of 18000 "KEROSENE CASTLE" at Didcot

The access problem to Didcot could easily be resolved. Today I had a look around the new Corwen Station which also has a a subway entrance. The stair access is very similar to Didcot. The solution is a mobile platform fixed to one side of the staircase walk. Saw an elderly chap with one of those...

Sad state of 18000 "KEROSENE CASTLE" at Didcot

Don't get me wrong I don't want it sanitised and the ability to wander around almost anywhere is brilliant. Something which seems lost at most other rail heritage sites now unless on a guided tour. I do wonder how Didcot has not fallen victim to the H&S zealots that have stopped shed visits at...

Sad state of 18000 "KEROSENE CASTLE" at Didcot

Oh that is good news shame it got into such a state in first place.

Sad state of 18000 "KEROSENE CASTLE" at Didcot

Currently on holiday in South Wales but looking for somewhere dryer whizzed over to GWS Didcot on the train and had a pleasant day. This is my first visit to Didcot since 1983 and first time I have seen the pioneering gas turbine. However, this historically important loco just looks...

    Trivia: Fictional Railways in Media

The 1977 Movie "The Stick Up" starring David Sole was filmed on and around Dartmoor and featured a train robbery on the South Devon (then Dart Valley) Railway. Staverton station featured - but I am sure was renamed. Staverton Station also featured in the TV series "A Horseman Riding By" and...

    GWR Pullman dining reinstated

My interest in transport extends to ships - and I have had quite a few moving experiences at sea - even once where one of the catering staff had to make a sudden exit whilst serving me in an Irish Sea gale. :D For some reason I just don't get motion sick (thank goodness) and I have sailed...

    GWR Pullman dining reinstated

It is many years since I have dined on a train but as a teenager and through to my early 20s when I quit the rails in 82 after passing my driving test on board dining was a very attractive experience. Next year I intend to get an "All Lines 1st Rover" and look forward to sampling what remains...

British heritage lines which are returning to normal, post Covid-19 restrictions.

Good to hear that. I am staying in South Wales next week and have been planning at popping over by GWR next Wednesday on a day trip.

    Max speed...

During the Autumn 2021 TPE Club 55 Promotion I took a day trip from Liverpool to Newcastle on an Nova 1 / 802 and took my GPS with me which I normally use when on board ships and ferries. First time I had used it by rail and only decided to do so when observing some railtour participants...

How do BTP manage to cover the rail network?

Yes and currently cover some Metros thus not entirely railway. Name is historical more than anything as they were created by the British Transport Commission by the amalgamation of the previous Big 4 railway police services. Also covered the canals until 1962 according to their Wikipedia entry...

Which little-used stations might be candidates for closure in the new age of cost-cutting?

Heysham is important for Sail & Rail tickets sold by the Isle of Man Steam Packet. Following the nationalisation of the company by the IOM Government in 2018 it may well be that the government would find it appropriate to underwrite any loses on the Heysham service. IOM Govt have already...
