    Ffestiniog Railway Victorian Weekend Photos

I visited the Ffestiniog Railway last Friday and Saturday for the annual Victorian Weekend. I have now added the photographs to my Ffestiniog Railway 2016 Gallery at: http://www.jhluxton.com/Railways-and-Tramways/Welsh-Narrow-Gauge/Ffestiniog-Railway-2016/ Here are a few samples...

    Merseyrail severed lines question

I recall being taken to Ormskirk in the 1960s and all three platform lines (up and down) and bay were electrified. When through running ended the down line was retained as a by-pass to the back to back stops but was later removed. By the time the upline was severed the bay platform line had...

    Trawsfynydd re-opening proposed

I think the logical thing would be to reopen the Blaenau Ffestiniog to Ffestiniog as an extension to the Ffestiniog Railway or even the Network Rail line - but beyond that is it worth it?

    Former Seaton Junction station building

Yes it certainly appears to be. I was in my teens when I took these photos and had not learnt to drive yet. My father used to take me to Seaton and Beer when on holidays for a visit to the Seaton Tramway (which was laid on most of the branch) and then on to Peco at Beer. There have been...

    Former Seaton Junction station building

By comparison these photographs I took on April 04, 1978: Unfortunately I didn't photograph the forecourt side of the building! Captions can be found at: http://www.jhluxton.com/The-35mm-Film-Archive/Railways/The-Withered-Arm/Seaton-Junction-Station/ Photos of other...

Smugmug / Zenfolio Are they worth it?

Quite simple - SmugMug gives you total control, it is very similar to a conventional web site. Flickr is too constrained - SmugMug is can be completely configured to your own design. John

Smugmug / Zenfolio Are they worth it?

I have had a Smugmug site - www.jhluxton.com since 2010, though I have only really started to seriously develop it in the past 18 months. For many years - almost since the world wide web started in the 1990s I ran a conventional web site which was edited using various versions of Microsoft...

    Most evocative station names

To me on a personal basis the most evocative station names were Penzance and Exeter St David's. In my late teens early 20s used to travel to West Country from Liverpool departure from Lime St was around 09:20 if I recall correctly with a relief SO 09:15? train to Paignton which went via Hereford...

    Railway Stations Without Tracks!

The original Ffestiniog Rly Station at Blaenau Ffestiniog survives as public toilets. At Carlingford on the Greenore branch the station survives as public toilets and tourist office, or did when I last passed through a few years back and Google suggests it's still there.

    Railway Stations Without Tracks!

Tintern Station Monmouthshire hasn't seen a passenger train since 1959 but is still very busy with people as a tea rooms and visitor centre on Wye Valley Line route.

Passenger service lines that deserve to close

i holiday in this area and occasionally take a trip. Gunnislake Bere Alston appears quite well used. i have seen whole families just do Bere Alston to Calstock one stop as the crossing of the viaduct provides what is essentially a ferry service. It is a few miles round by road. John

    Pricey food outlets at stations

Today for £7 at Carrog Station I bought one tea, one coffee (served in proper mugs) one slice of carrot cake and a corned beef and branston pickle bap. Seemed pretty good value
