South Devon Railway vandalism and theft

The SDR (as the Dart Valley Railway) was the first heritage line I ever visited. My parents took me there shortly after it was reopened by Dr Beeching. I think a suitable punishment for these louts to show them the error of their ways would be to sentence them to a lengthy period of...

    [Trivia] Unused railway infrastructure?

Quite extensive remains just south of Beddgelert Station on the Welsh Highland Railway comprising partly built embankment, road over bridge and incomplete accommodation bridge in the middle of a field to which the embankment never reached. These were for the aborted Porthmadog Beddgelert and...

    Merseyrail hidden tunnel

yes the black box was the indicator indicator. There was a lift down to the platform for platform trollies. Access to this was just by the illuminated glass case going to the left. There was a suspended walkway which led to the lift which went down to the platform. However, I am sure it was...

    Merseyrail hidden tunnel

Would be interesting to find out. The whole frontage of the Lyceum Building changed but the rest of the remainder of the basement of the building was more closed in with bushes and clutter, however it did house a period cafe - restaurant "Reece's Lyceum" my mother took me in there a few times in...

    Merseyrail hidden tunnel

The other end of the Low Level subway came out under the Lyceum building at the side nearest Central Station. Some of it must still exist under the Lyceum, at least part of it. I was in my teens when used it last but remember you entered the subway under the Lyceum on a slight down grade and...

    Merseyrail hidden tunnel

i am sure there is reference to this tunnel in the old Oakwood Press Mersey Railway book. Long sine lost my copy but I think it was a carriage in steam days. THERE was a heading just before James Street which was used for the loop this was originally constructed to form a link to docks and I...

Snailbeach District Railways - December 2016

As well as an interest in railways, particularly heritage railways I have also had a lifelong interest in Industrial Archaeology - in particularly mining. Some weeks ago I was driving through Shropshire and spotted a sign of Snailbeach - for years I had intended visiting the Snailbeach Mine...

Bramley Moore Dock -a new station?

The station might also be quite close to the proposed relocated Isle of Nan Steam Packet Terminal which is likely to be moved from the Present Pier Head location to near the former Waterloo Dock area.

    Lines Not Nationalised in 1948

If I recall correctly the Talyllyn Railway existed in two legal entities Tywyn to Abergynolwyn and Abergynolwyn to Bryneglwys Quarry even though under common ownership. Separating should not have proved that difficult if there had been a will to do so. When the mines were nationalised some...

    Lines Not Nationalised in 1948

The Mersey Rly is interesting. I used to have a copy of the Oakwood history of the MR and I recall reading that the MR continued to operate at least semi independently until 1951 when London Midland finally realised it was part of their territory and sent in people to sort it out. Perhaps there...

    Train Station

The term "train station" just offends my ears as does the substitution of absolutely for the word yes. I am not ancient being born I 1959. I was brought up to understand that station referred to a railway station you added bus to describe a bus station. If one thinks about it we are...

Tavistock to Bere Alston possible reopening: what infrastructure could be required and what service provision might operate?

I was in a bit of a rush and I didn't have as much time to explore as I would have liked. I visit the Tavistock area quite regularly but this is the first time I have been up to the station site though I pass the missing bridge on the Gunnislake Road often. If I recall correctly it was removed...
