Class 484 replacing class 483 on the island line: progress updates

I'm there anyway for other things, so if they're running that's a bonus.

Class 484 replacing class 483 on the island line: progress updates

And it's just trundled back the other way. Fingers crossed for this coming weekend, I'm on the island Saturday and Sunday.

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

The done thing for celebrities and politicians is to ignore the rules, then put some lily livered "apology" on Twitter. I have a dormant twitter account, does that mean I can do what I like as long as I write something like "I've let myself and the organisation down" afterwards?

    GWR Class 165/166 Turbo Diagrams

Having spent the best part of a decade commuting on these into Paddington, it still seems odd to see Turbos by the seaside.

the most over the top restrictions introduced

As the ones provided are normally blunt, I'm happy to oblige with this one. 1607849371 They do have a point though, if slightly clumsily put. GP surgeries offering the vaccines have been told to put all other work on hold. This isn't good enough. People with other medical needs cannot be...

Hypotheses for the geographical distribution of Covid

I think the density of housing has a lot to do with it. That's why the west country has lower levels, and the Highlands and islands. There were 21,000 positive tests recorded yesterday. However what wasn't mentioned is that over 400,000 tests were processed. I think that's the most ever. Last...

    New national restrictions in Wales

People often quote Sweden as a example of how things should be done. I disagree. We should be looking to South Korea. They have had a large case increase over the last few days. Are they locking down? No. They are pouring resources in to testing and tracing on a hyper local level.

    Longest line of sight (UK)

Caesar's Camp right on the Surrey/Hampshire border has fantastic views right across to ce tral London. I'd say that's circa 40 miles.

Memories of unusual services in the post-privatisation era

I travelled on that a couple of times, not just for fun but because it was the most convenient way to get me from Highbury & Islington to Farnborough. I was one of only about half a dozen passengers on board.

the most over the top restrictions introduced

I've seen the lines of Royal Caribbean ships off the Dorset coast looking forlorn and draining the company's finances. If they want to kill off the cruise business for ever they are going the right way about doing it. They have the task of shedding the image of being floating petri dishes, which...

    Pacer flattens gates at Dereham

They are most certainly not playing. The vast majority of volunteers are enthusiasts, who care deeply about all aspects of what they are doing, including safety. And I'm sure they enjoy doing it and get great satisfaction, but playing doesn't come in to it.

    Pacer flattens gates at Dereham

Anyone wishing to "play trains" has no place in a safety critical role on the railway, preserved or otherwise. I'd rather have closed railways than unsafe ones (I'm not making any suggestions about the MNR, or this incident. This is a general thought). But I think this conversation was had on...

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

Interestingly today's SAGE scientist on Radio 4 was introduced as "speaking in a personal capacity, not as a member of SAGE" Has someone finally tightened the rules?

In your opinion - which TOC has been the most experimental and why?

From a franchising point of view, I'd say "One". Very experimental in the way that two and a half existing franchises were combined, with a huge diversity of stock and routes served, never mind the huge diversity of staff t&cs as well to iron out. Had any lessons been learnt before Wessex, FGW...

    Media Coverage of COVID -19

What they don't say is that there are 1600 cancer deaths in the US a day. Every day, 365 days a year. There are 2300 heart disease deaths every day, 365 days a year.

Longest distance of track without a tunnel?

In the case of this one, it's not just the canal but a bit of the surrouding landscape as well that is tunnelled under. The railway is in a deep cutting here, and the tunnel is a bit that was never cut out when the railway was built. Although I concede that its formal name is "Frimley Aqueduct"

Longest distance of track without a tunnel?

There's a short tunnel under the Basingstoke Canal between Brookwood and Farnborough

    Supermarkets and Covid-19

Correct. Once you read beyond the hysterical headlines, actually no one is being compelled to work. If a supermarket can be staffed based on volunteers for overtime, good luck to them. I cannot stand this bandwagon culture based on the ignorance of the public.

    New national restrictions in Wales

As has been proven by the first lockdown, it doesn't. Edit: What @Richard Scott said, and he's far more qualified to comment than I am.

Suggestions for future use of Class 332s post-HEx

If they were cars, they would be "S" reg. Puts it in to perspective.
