I think that will all depend if the unions are onboard. Never had to have a crew member in 170s when we ran them in multiple but we could not operate them as DOO if more than one. These days our 755s can operate with no crew members in the rear units and can operate DOO as long as certain agreed...
Yes the XC services on this route seem to do a decent trade all along the route.
I didn’t look at Chesterfield only Sheffield. Would just be the 15-20min difference between Leicester/Ely and obviously travelling via Doncaster would be out of the race.
Fastest journey is usually changing at Peterborough & Doncaster. That is followed by Leicester and then finally Ely. Each is approximately 20 minutes quicker than the next.

I think the additional traincrew would have been for all the unnecessary shunting of 745s to sidings then getting them out again as well as all the detatching and attaching 720s which would also become a performance risk.
If you go back to 2016 then it has been stated internally that Hitachi would’ve been the preferred bidder but couldn’t deliver in the timescale due to existing commitments to other new train orders namely GWR and LNER. For this reason Stadler was chosen for bimodes but the order wasn’t big...
